Episode 34: Say Cheese!
One day in the cottage, Elder Kettle says to the boys, "Boys, today, we're taking a family portrait."
"Aw," The boys reply, disappointed.
"'Aw' is right. It'll be a memento of the family I love," Elder Kettle happily says.
However, the boys begin fighting again.
Cuphead shouts, "Amusement park!"
Mugman shouts, "Movie!"
Cuphead shouts, "Amusement park!"
Mugman shouts, "Movies!"
Cuphead shouts again, "Amusement park!"
Mugman shouts, "Movies!"
Upset by their fighting, Elder Kettle scolds them, "Will you two stop it?!"
He stops himself as he nervously chuckles, and says, "I mean, uh, we can't take a family portrait with you two arguing, now can we?"
"Well, I wanna go to the amusement park," Cuphead says.
Then Mugman says, "And I wanna go to the movies."
And they both begin arguing again.
Cuphead shouts, "Amusement park!"
And Mugman shouts, "Movies!"
Cuphead shouts again, "Amusement park!"
Mugman shouts again, "Movies!"
They both growl at each other and begin fighting with each other.
They both fight as they shout at each other, "Amusement park! Amusement park! Movies! Movies! Amusement park! Movies! Amusement park. Mo- Movies."
And soon stop when they see Elder Kettle has them both held by their handles.
"Then Kettle reasons with the boys, "Look, boys, if you two can't stop fighting, I'll never get my family photo. A memento of the family I love."
Then places them down, "Can't you try to get along for your Elder Kettle?"
The boys look at each other and say, "Yes, Elder Kettle."
"That's the spirit. Now, let's get you two cleaned up," Elder Kettle happily says.
Soon the three are outside, and Elder Kettle sprays them with the hose to get them washed up. Once washed and dried, they end up wearing some casual formal clothes.
"Oh!" Kettle happily says.
And the two begin fighting again as each brother shouts, "Amusement park!" Movies!
Elder Kettle grumbles and shouts, "Will you two stop fighting!"
Soon the two stop fighting
Elder Kettle pinches the bridge between his eyes and says, "Okay, how about this? Stop fighting, we take the portrait, memento, family I love, then I'll take you to the amusement park and the movies.
The boys happily cheer, "Yay! Whoo-hoo! Yay!"
However, they come to a stop.
Cuphead turns to Kettle and says, Uh... Wait a minute. You're always promising to take us places. Then when it's time to go, you say you can't remember."
"I don't remember that," Kettle replies.
He picks up the camera with a chuckle and says, "Oh, Kettle, you rascal, you."
Elder Kettle then places the camera in his truck and climbs in. Then the boys climb into the truck as well.
He calls out, "Here we go, boys. Time to find that perfect setting."
Then Elder Kettle drives off to find the perfect setting.
Sometime later, Cuphead and Mugman are standing over the sunset with big smiles on their faces..
Elder Kettle says, "Well, thanks to your shenanigans, we missed the actual sunset, but this'll do."
Turns out they're just standing in front of a posterboard of the sunset that reads 'Sunset Tires' on it.
Elder Kettle sets the camera and says, "Now, don't move a muscle, starting... now!" and set the timer.
The timer begins ticking as Elder Kettle gets behind the boys for the picture.
He then holds a big smile as he says, "Eight seconds…"
The timer continues ticking.
Elder Kettle counts down, "Six, five, four…"
As they wait, the boys struggle to get a word out.
When the timer is almost up, Elder Kettle says, "Say cheese!"
Just then, the boys scream and begin fighting again and each other shout, "Amusement park! Movies!"
Elder Kettle scolds them, Hey! Will you two knock it off? Get back over here. I said stop that! Get back over here!"
The boys continue fighting and crash into the billboard, and that causes the 'Sunset Tires' Poster to slide down piece by piece.
Elder Kettle sees the timer and quickie smiles, "Oh! Cheese!"
Then the camera goes off and it takes the photo. However, instead of the sunset. It shows a photo of himself as a small child, wearing a diaper, bonet, and little booties. It says 'Lil Elder Kettle is' And the word 'Diaper Baby' is spelled by blocks. The boys continue fighting until they stop to see the new poster board in its place. The boys continue fighting until they stop and gasp to see the poster. Then the two start laughing. Elder Kettle is confused as to why the boys are laughing, until he turns around to see the poster. He screams in horror to see it. The boys continue laughing until fire blasts out of nowhere and burns the poster. The boys turn to see the one who has burned it is Elder Kettle, holding a flamethrower much to their shock.
"You saw nothing!" Elder Kettle says bitterly.
He then picks up the camera and leaves the scene.
Sometime later, the three are driving back home and Elder Kettle has a scowl look on his face. The boys are deeply confused as to why Elder Kettle is upset.
Nervous, Mugman asks, "Uh, Elder Kettle, are you ready to talk about, uh, Diaper Baby?"
Elder Kettle soon explains very bitterly, "Okay. I'll tell you. Long ago, my mother entered me into a Cutest Baby contest. I won, and it ruined my life." Then he accelerates the engine and the truck drives faster.
Elder Kettle continues, "I became known as Diaper Baby. It haunted me my entire childhood. Well, you can imagine what school was like for Diaper Baby. That's why I decided to... Burn them all!"
Elder Kettle remembers at his younger age that he is in some rebellious stage and uses the same flamethrower to burn the posters of 'Diaper Baby' as he chuckles and maniacally laughs.
Elder Kettle continues to drive the truck fast as he continues laughing maniacally, until he screeches to a stop in front of the cottage. Elder Kettle grabs the camera and the flamethrower and walks into the cottage.
Cuphead calls out, "Hey, what happened to the amusement park?"
Mugman calls out, "And the movie?"
And then to begin fighting again, each of them shouting, "Amusement park! Movie! Amusement park! Movie!"
Elder Kettle slams the door closed as he grumbles and places the camera down. Seeing the camera and remembering what happened, Elder Kettle begins sobbing and prepares to walk up stairs. Before he can walk up the stairs, the boys follow him with frowns on their faces.
Mugman says, "But Elder Kettle! You promised!"
Then Mugman says, "Me and Mugsy came through on our end. "
Elder Kettle frustratedly turns to the boys with a bitter look and says, "Oh, did you?"
Then walks towards them, "Here's what I remember. I set the timer, took my place, and with only the waning vestiges of daylight remaining, I said, 'Cheese!' Meanwhile, you two couldn't resist fighting!"
He then begins to sob again, "And now the only thing I wanted is ruined. Portrait... Memento…" and continues sobbing as he walks up the stairs in his room.
Seeing Elder Kettle gone, the boys lower their heads.
Mugman sadly says, "One minute we're going to the movies and the amusement park, and the next minute we're going nowhere."
Then Cuphead lets out a sigh.
Mugman turns to Cuphead and says, "Hey Cuphead."
"Yeah Mugsy?" Cuphead questions.
"I think we're going to need some help with this one," Mugman says.
The next day, seeing how Elder Kettle is still sobbing in his room, Cuphead and Mugman head to the Candy Castle in Sugarland to get advice from the only person who can help them.
"Diaper baby," Red Rose asks.
That's right, it's Red Rose.
"Yeah. Elder Kettle was so bummed when we laughed at the photo, and was upset with us for fighting while we were trying to take the family portrait," Mugman says.
Then Cuphead says, "And because of that we can't go to the amusement park and the movies. That's why we came to you. We want to make sure everyone is happy from this."
"Well, if you ask me, there is only one solution to this problem. You both need to get an honest family photo with Elder Kettle, and without all the fighting. Which is not going to be easy," Red Rose says.
"What's so hard about that?" Cuphead asks.
Red Rose chuckles, "No offense boys, but you both get into a lot of arguments and fights, a lot, mainly with each other."
"Uh…" the boys reply, dumbfounded.
Then Mugman says, "Yeah. We go fight… alot…"
"And we do fight about every little thing," Cuphead says.
"That's true. But maybe we can take the time to make things right. We just need to find a place where we can get the picture, and bring Elder Kettle there for the family portrait," Red Rose says.
"Sounds like a plan," Cuphead says.
Then Mugman asks with excitement, "Ooh, ohh, can we make it a surprise?"
"Sure, whatever will make Elder Kettle happy," Red Rose says.
Then Cuphead asks, "But where are we going to take the picture?"
"Hmm…" The three friends reply, thinking of an idea.
Then Red Rose asks, "You said that Elder Kettle wanted to have a picture by the sunset right?"
"That's right," Cuphead says.
"Maybe we can do something like that," Red Rose says.
She snaps her fingers and an idea comes to mind, "And I know the perfect place to go for it."
Time has passed, and the three friends have come up with the perfect plan to help get the perfect family photo. Red Rose has shown them the location and it's perfect. They just need to wait until it's sunset and find a way to get Elder Kettle to the very location. Cuphead and Mugman walk towards the cottage as they have a plan to get Elder Kettle to the house.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Mugman asks.
"I know it may not be the best idea, but it's the best that I can think of," Cuphead says.
Then holds out a photo, "And all we need is this."
"I still don't think we should have that photo distributed. You saw how he reacted seeing the photo," Mugman says, feeling guilty.
"I don't feel happy about this idea, but it's the best we can think of. Besides, think of it being a little game of Capture the Flag, only is Capture the Picture," Cuphead says.
"Okay," Mugman says.
"Great. Make sure you grab the camera," Cuphead says.
"Alright," Mugman says.
Cuphead and Mugman then walk into the house to see Elder Kettle with a sad look on his face as he sits on the couch. The boys soon notice the camera standing next to the stairs. Mugman tip toes to the camera and gently grabs it. Then sneaks towards the door. The boys nod their heads.
Cuphead walks over, "Hey Elder Kettle, how are you doing?"
"Fine, I guess," Elder Kettle answers, depressed.
"I know the family portrait didn't go out so well, but maybe we can laugh about it," Cuphead says.
"And how are we going to laugh about it?" Elder Kettle asks.
"Well, we still have the picture from last night and now we can laugh about it," Cuphead says, and holds the photo.
Elder Kettle turns in shock to see the photo from last night.
"How did you…?" Elder Kettle asks, shocked.
"We have our ways. Anyway, we're going to use it for a game out of it. Wanna play?" Cuphead asks.
"Uh how about you give me the picture so I can burn it and leave it," Elder Kettle says.
Cuphead thinks for a bit and says, "Nah. You have to admit, it was kind of funny. Also, if you want it, you'll have to play a game. In this case, we'll be playing Capture the Picture and Camera."
"Camera?" Elder Kettle says, confused.
Elder Kettle turns to see Mugman holding the camera as Cuphead walks over.
"Uh what are you boys up to?" Elder Kettle asks, confused.
"Since we can't go to the amusement park and the movies, we decided to play a game. If you want this photo, then you'll have to catch us," Cuphead says, as he opens the door.
"We'll be starting the game… Now!" Mugman says.
Then Cuphead and Mugman dash off, talking the camera and the picture with.
Elder Kettle panics, "Boys! Come back! Boys!" and runs after them.
Cuphead and Mugman run down the path from their house and into the woods as Elder Kettle chases after them.
Elder Kettle calls out, "Boys, give me that photo! And give back my camera! Be careful!"
Cuphead and Mugman continue to run down the path, taking the photo and the camera in their hands.
"Are we close to where Sugarland is?" Mugman asks.
"Yeah. I see the entrance," Cuphead says and sees the entrance.
The boys run through the entryway and into Sugarland.
Seeing the boys go through the portal, Elder Kettle wonders, "Huh? Why would the boys be going there? I hope they're not going to show Red Rose that."
Elder Kettle runs through the entryway as well. Elder Kettle looks around and sees that the boys are already far ahead.
Elder Kettle sighs, "What are those boys up to?" and continue to run after them.
Sometime later, Cuphead and Mugman arrive at the spot where Red rose and Bon Bon are.
"Hey guys, glad to see you made it," Red Rose says.
"Yeah. And the plan's working, Elder Kettle is following us," Cuphead says.
"Good, now get changed before Elder Kettle arrives," Red Rose says.
The boys quickly hide in the bushes and quickly change their clothes that they have hidden in the bushes in advance. Soon, they're well dressed and quickly have the camera set up at the right position.
"There we go. Everything is ready," Cuphead says.
Mugman looks over, "And just in time too, here he comes."
Elder Kettle runs over and looks kind of exhausted.
Bon Bon walks over, "Hello Elder Kettle, it's good to see you again."
"Hello Baroness, it's good to see you again," Elder Kettle says.
Then turns to the boys, "Okay boys, I'm here."
"Good. We wanted you to come here," Cuphead says.
"Huh?" Elder Kettle says, confused.
Then Mugman holds out the picture to him, "Here you go. We got rid of the film with the photo. And you can take care of this."
"Thanks," Elder Kettle says, and takes the photo before tearing it up into pieces.
Then asks, "So why did you decide to come here?"
"For the perfect familiar portrait background," Cuphead answers.
"Perfect background?" Elder Kettle says, confused.
"We're going to take our family portrait here," Mugman says, and gesture his hands to the location.
Elder Kettle looks over and is amazed to see the waterfalls of soda, and a large lake. There are also many different kinds of candy growing on trees and the ground. It's a lovely valley.
"Oh my, this place is beautiful," Elder Kettle says, amazed.
"Red Rose showed it to us and think it's a great place to go to," Cuphead says.
Then Mugman says, "We're sorry that we ruined the first picture."
"And we wanted to make it right so we decided to set this up. We asked Red Rose for some advice," Cuphead says.
"Aww, that's sweet of you boys. Thank you," Elder Kettle says.
"You're welcome, Elder Kettle," The boys and and give Elder Kettle a hug.
"Now then, let's take that family photo," Elder Kettle says.
"Yeah!" The boys happily say.
"Alright guys, I'll be setting the camera," Red Rose says.
Just then, Elder Kettle says, "Red Rose, how would you and your mom like to join us in the portrait? I know you only spend some time together at the cottage, and we're still getting to know your mom, but you both are kind of like family. So it will be nice that you and your mother can join us in the photo.
"Are you sure?" Red Rose asks.
"Yeah. You can take the picture with us," Mugman says.
"Yeah. Then we can all go to the amusement park," Cuphead says.
"Don't you mean the movie," Mugman says.
Before they can argue, Elder Kettle says, "Why not we go to both."
The booths look at each other and nod their head, "Both it is."
"Okay then. We'll get the timer and take our places," Bon Bon happily says.
"Sure," Red Rose says and sets the timer.
Red Rose then sets the timer as Bon Bon takes her place. Luckily, Red Rose is already wearing the dress from before on. Once she has the timer set up, Red Rose stands by with the boys and Elder Kettle as the timer ticks back to reach zero.
Elder Kettle says, "Say cheese everyone."
Then everyone says, "Cheese."
And with that, the camera takes the picture. And from the looks of it, it's a picture perfect photo.
