Episode 35: Lost in the Woods
One day at the cottage, Mugman is chopping firewood with Elder Kettle watching. Mugman lifts the axe and chop the wood in half. Red Rose is also helping them chop the firewood as well.
Mugman turns to Red Rose and says, "Thanks for helping us chop the firewood Red Rose."
"It's no problem. I'm always happy to help," Red Rose says, and continues chopping the fire wood.
Sweating a bit, Mugman wipes it off and says, "Whew! Chopping firewood sure is hard work."
"True, true, my boy. But if you work hard today…" Elder Kettl says.
Then Mugman says, "You can rest easy tomorrow. Being prepared is my middle name."
Then brings out a sash covered in badges, "Don't forget, I was the most decorated Cub Scout in my troop." and places it on.
"And don't you forget," Elder Kettle says.
But says in a very serious tone, "Winter is a merciless killer! We must procure enough firewood to keep us warm through the long, dark nights."
He then happily says, "But with you and your brother's hard work, I'm sure we'll have more than enough to survive the winter." Elder Kettle turns his body as he asks, "Isn't that right, Cuphead?"
However, they notice that Cuphead is not here.
"Cuphead?" Elder Kettle says, confused.
Elder Kettle walks over and wonders, "Uh, where is that boy? And why hasn't he chopped a single piece of firewood?"
Suddenly, Elder Kettle hears sizzling and turns to see Cuphead has lit up a fuse on a rocket and it launches into the air with an explosion. Cuphead laughs at the sight of it.
Elder Kettle scolds him, "Oh! Consarn it, Cuphead! Don't you realize winter's coming? This is the time to work hard so we can enjoy…"
However, Cuphead ignores him and watches another rocket fly in the air and explodes, making him laugh.
Elder Kettle grabs Cuphead by the wrist and lectures him, "That does it! You think this is funny?" and turns him to the firewood, "Well, now you are gonna take this pile of firewood and stack it neatly…"
However, Elder Kettle sees Cuphead has tied the firewood to the rocket that is lit. It flies in the air and explodes destroying the chopped wood.
Elder Kettle is streaming mad now, "Do you have any idea what you've just done?"
"Yeah, I got rid of all that stinkin' hard work," Cuphead says.
And Elder Kettle says worried, "And now we don't have any firewood for the winter."
"Eh, I ain't too worried about it," Cuphead says.
"Oh, is that so?" Elder Kettle replies with a smile.
And sternly say, "Well, now you get to gather the entire season's worth of firewood by yourself."
Then yells at him, "So get chopping!"
Cuphead deflates and says, "Yes, Elder Kettle." and walks away to do as he's told.
"Uh, you do realize he didn't even take an axe?" Mugman questions.
Red Rose sighs and says, "Come on Mugman, let's go find Cuphead.
Elder Kettle groans in reply.
Sometime later, in the forest, Mugman and Red Rose continue to chop the wood, but Cuphead ties them to a rocket and launches them into the air. After doing it a few times, Mugman and Red Rose glare at him.
Mugman angrily screams, "Will you cut that out?"
"Ah, come on, Mugsy, Rosy, don't be sore. I'm just having a little fun," Cuphead says.
"You're supposed to be helping us with the firewood, not launching your rockets," Red Rose says.
"She's right. We're not here to have fun, we're here to chop firewood." Mugman angrily says, and passes the axe to Cuphead.
Mugman reaches the wood as he mutters to himself, "Stupid rockets." and mockingly, "Having a little fun."
Mugman turns to see Cuphad has tied the axe to the rocket and it launches into the air. And then it explodes.
Mugman angrily asks, "Did you just launch my axe?"
"Just be glad that Cuphead and I still have ours," Red Rose says.
However, Cuphead launches them into the air too.
Mugman growls in anger, "Unbelievable! Now we'll have to go home and get another axe."
"Okay, fine. Let's go," Cuphead says and prepares to leave.
But stops and asks, "Uh, which way was home again?"
"It's obviously…" Mugman says, and begins to look around. Uh... I'm not sure."
Then Mugman says, "Hand me the compass."
However, Cuphead launches it into the air with the rocket as well.
"Why would you launch our only compass?" Mugman questions irritated.
"I guess I didn't think that one through," Cuphead says.
Then turns to Red Rose, "Hey Rose, do you have yours?"
Sorry, I had to have it fixed at the repaired shop because a certain someone stepped on it the other day," Red Rose says and sternly glares at Cuphead.
Cuphead nervously says, "Oh right.
Mugman panics, "Without a compass, we really are... " And screams, "...lost in the woods!"
And his voice echos, "...woods! ...woods!"
"Eh, I ain't too worried about it," Cuphead says, not having a car.
Mugman has enough and angrily says, "Oh, you're not, huh? Well, it must be nice. The only reason you're not worried about anything is because Elder Kettle and I worry about everything for you. In fact, we do everything for you!"
Cuphead scoffs it off, "Oh, relax, would ya? Me not worrying about stuff is the only reason we have any fun around here."
"You wouldn't make it one day without me and my worrying!" Mugman angrily says.
Cuphead scoffs it off, "Ah, banana oil! I've had it with you and your worrying!"
"Oh really? Well, I'll tell ya what. I'll keep worrying about stuff, and you keep not worrying about stuff, and see where that gets you!" Mugman angrily says.
"Okay, I will!" Cuphead says, sarcastically.
Then Mugman says, "Good. I'm outta here."
"Great. Me too," Cuphead says.
Mugman says, "Good!"
"Great!" Cuphad says.
They both grumble and reply, "Hmm!"
They both walk in different directions,
However, they both turn back with nervous chuckles and say, "I was going the other way. I went the wrong way too. Just a bit of a mix-up! So I'll just find my own way out. Best be on my way then."
Red Rose sighs and says, "Here we go again."
Red Rose follows Muman and asks, "Mugman, are you sure it's a good idea to leave Cuphead behind?"
"Well, Cuphead said that he isn't too worried about anything, and doesn't bother taking responsibility," Mugman says.
"I know, but still. I don't feel right leaving Cuphead alone," Red Rose says.
Mugman sighs and says, "I suppose. Maybe when Cuphead learns his lesson we'll help him. Sounds fair. Now let's go find a place to stay until we have a plan."
Sometime later, Cuphead has been sleeping with his head on a log and talks in his sleep, "What a couple of jerks." and laughs in his sleep.
Suddenly, the cold air blows and Cuphead begins to shiver.
He says to himself in his sleep, "So cold."
Cuphead wakes up as he stands and wraps his arms around himself.
His teeth chatter as he says, "Oh, it's freezing." and groans to feel the cold air.
Cuphead continues to walk through the dark forest as he shivers.
"Okay, so getting a little hungry," Cuphead says and feels his stomach growling.
Then says, "Not too worried. Just gotta find some…"
Cuphead gasps and looks in the knot of the tree to see Acorns.
He eagerly says, "Food!"
Cuphead reaches his hand inside the hole to pull the acorns out, but his hand is stuck. Cuphead tries to pull it out but is really stuck. He suddenly hears chittering and looks up to see three angry acorns.
Cuphad nervously says, "Oh hello." and lets out a nervous chuckle.
And the squirrels beat him up for trying to take their food. The squirrels then toss Cuphead over the rocks and crash down to the ground.
Weakened, Cuphead says, "Still ain't too worried."
Later in the night, when the moon is full, and the wolf howls on the rock, well more like Cuphead. Cuphead runs on fours as he is acting like a wild animal, and even grows a beard. Meanwhile, a racoon is in the river, trying to catch some food. It catches a fish and places it on the ground close by while searching for more. Cuphead runs through the forest, notices the fish, and begins munching on it. However, he stops to see the racoon. Cuphead spits it back out, and hands it back to the raccoon. The raccoon takes the and punches Cuphead in the face.
Time has gone by and a harsh winter comes by. Cuphead is crawling through the snow, cold and hungry, and no place to stay until the winter ends.
Shivering, Cuphead says to himself, "So cold. So hungry. A little worried now."
And as he crawls through the snow, Cuphead notices a cabin up ahead, "Maybe whoever lives here will help me."
Cuphead slowly crawls towards the cabin and knocks on the door.
The door opens and Mugman answers, "Yes, may I help you?"
"Mugsy, what are you doing out here?" Cuphead asks, relieved.
"Well, someone I once knew lost our only compass and broke on our friends. Then the harsh winter set in, and we were forced to build this cabin and lodge here until spring. Now if you'll excuse me, it's quite cold and I'm baking a pie," Mugman says, and plans to close the door.
"We?" Cuphead says, confused.
But then Cuphead cries out, "Wait, Mugsy! I'll freeze to death! I'll starve!"
"I ain't too worried about it," Mugman says bitterly, and slams the door shut.
And the show falls on Cuphead.
In the cabin, Mugman takes the pie out of the oven. Red Rose is busy making some hot drinks for them.
Red Rose turns and asks, "Who's at the front door?"
"It was Cuphead," Mugman says.
"And you didn't let him in?" Red Rose questions.
"Well, he said that he ain't too worried about it," Mugman says.
"Well, I'm worried about Cuphead," Red Rose says.
The two look out the window to see Cuphead is frozen in an ice block as he hugs himself and his teeth are chatting.
Red Rose turns to Mugman. Muman understands what Red Rose stare means, so he picks up an axe and a blanket and walks outside. Mugman then swings his axe at the ice block and it shatters into pieces.
Mugman wraps a blanket around him as he says, "Well, Cuphead, I hope you learned something. I'm not one to rub it in, but as you can now clearly see, worrying wins the day. A wise man once- "
But Cuphead grabs his hand and says, "Yeah yeah… I get it. I should be more worried about stuff. Now let's get inside before we freeze."
Then drags Mugman inside and closes the door shut.
Red Rose walks over with mugs and says, "I made you guys some tea."
"Red Rose, you're here too," Cuphead says.
He sighs in relief, "So that's what you meant by 'we'."
The three then sit down and have some tea and pies.
"I'm surprised you guys made this cabin on your own," Cuphead says.
"Well, with the harsh winter we have to work fast," Mugman says.
"And we chopped a lot of firewood," Red Rose says, pointing to the large pile.
"Yeah. I guess it is important to get the work done. That way, we'll have time for some fun," Cuphead says.
"Exactly," Mugman says. "And we're going to be here for quite a while."
"I have to agree. We'll have to wait until the show passes before we can head outside," Red Rose says.
"Yeah, but I'm glad to have a great brother and friend to look out for me," Cuphead says.
Mugman and Red Rose nod their heads in reply.
Then Mugman raises his mug, "Cheers."
The three tap their mugs together and have their tea and pie.
Time has passed and the snowy winter has ended. Then the three leave the cabin with the firewood.
Cuphead asks, "Do you guys think we'll ever find the cottage."
"I sure hope so," Red Rose says.
"Me too. We've been walking around for a while," Mugnan says.
"I thought we went this way to come here, but now I'm not sure," Red Rose says.
Suddenly, they hear Elder Kettle, "Kids!"
The three turn their heads to see Elder Kettle walking towards them. Turns out, they haven't been that far from the cottage.
"There you are. Where have you three been?" Kettle asks.
"It's a long story," Cuphead says.
Then Muman says, "But look, we found and chopped more firewood."
Seeing the large pile of wood, Elder Kettle says, "Well good. I've already chopped up all the firewood back at the cottage. Come, get inside before you catch a cold."
Then points to Cuphead, "And Cuphead, shave that beard. I'm not raising a bum."
Then Elder Kettle walks to the house. Cuphead then rips off the beard he has on his face.
Mugman turns to Cuphead and says, "Hey, I- I guess we both didn't handle things too well back there. Uh, I just want to say I'm sorry. I didn't have any…"
But Cuphead says, "It's cool Mugsy. It was kind of my fault we got into that mess. I guess there are some things we should worry about, and be prepared as well.
"Good. Now you've learned something," Red Rose says.
"Yeah. I learned my lesson big time," Cuphead says,
Then Elder Kettle says, "Kids, come inside. I'm making hot chocolate."
The three happily nod their heads and walk into the house. They made mistakes and learned lessons, but glad they're able to get out of another situation.
