The Once Peaceful Night

(A/N: This story is based on a partial list of events that had taken place in La Porte, Indiana, on September 5th, 2004 at approx. midnight. Please Read & Review! Let me know if I should keep writing! Thanks!!)

-------------

The moon cast it's shadowy glow on the sleepy town, covering the streets with quiet and calm. Feelings of happiness and peace filled the streets as the wind played with the trees.

Until the silence and peace was broken. Shattered under the screams of the ambulance's siren. Soon after the siren tore the calm from the sky, a second joined in. Following on the tail of the ambulance lurched a shiny, red fire engine. The sirens screamed and whined as they raced down the narrow streets, hunting for their destination.

------------

Suddenly, the ambulance darted to the left. The fire engine quickly followed suit, still playing it's terrorizing song. The red and orange lights blazed, bouncing off the shiny reflective windows. The doctors, dressed in white, moved like dancers performing a synchronized step. They moved quickly; concern was written on all of their faces.

In a flash, the gourney was out of the ambulance and gaining speed down the white utilitarian corridors.

-----------

The whooshes of the wings of the steel bird carried through the night, reflecting the blue and orange lights. The monstrous machine slowly descended onto the black tarmac of the helipad, forcing the trees to bend and dance. The group of doctors pushed the gourney out of the door, racing it to the stomach of the steel bird. The doctors and pilot communicated back and forth in a series of glances and unreadable expressions.

The gourney, knowing the man's life rested in it's hands, found it's way into the steel bird. The machinery and equipment hummed, replenishing all of the precious fluids lost in the horrible accident...

The accident that took this leg... that almost took his life.

-------------

The doctors rushed back into the building, their work now done. They watched through the huge windows as the bird kicked into action. It's wings spun around, slicing the air, flapping at an immeasureable speed. It's lights gave off an orange and white glow as it ascended into the once peaceful sky.

The spotlight grew stronger, carving it's path through the darkness. And then the monstrous steel bird, the impossibly bright lights, the whines and screams and cries of the sirens ... were gone. Vanished... vanished like a thief in the night.

THE END
