"Are you actually avoiding Loki until he figures out why you showed him Phantom of the Opera?" Jason asked the next day as he was spinning around my chair. I was currently working on my machine, trying to put all of my focus on it. "I mean, you can't keep avoiding him when something happens between the two of you."
"What are you talking about? I'm not avoiding him. I'm working," I responded.
"Are you going to go visit him today?"
"Probably. It was an empty threat."
Jason laughed, "It's because you can't stay away from him, and you know it."
"Whatever you say."
"I'm going to go get Prince Whines-A-Lot and bring him here so you can keep working on your stupid project."
"It's not stupid. Under S.H.I.E.L.D.'s use, it is going to help people like me. That way, they don't have to worry about their powers like I do, possibly losing control and destroying the whole universe."
"I highly doubt that is going to happen. You somehow wouldn't let it happen."
"Just go get Loki," I said, dismissing Jason. I heard Jason laughing as he left my office area. Knowing it would be a while, I kept working on my machine. Good chance once Loki got here, I wouldn't be able to focus on it. His presence would just throw me off.
I continued working on my machine. I didn't want to stop until it was perfect, but it would be difficult. There were going to be kinks in it, and once it was able to be tested, I would have to be the test subject. After all, it was going to be used for people like me. For people who can't control their powers like they should.
I heard the door open, and without looking up, I asked, "Back already, Jason?"
"Last time I checked, I wasn't your annoying best friend," My mother's voice scoffed. I froze and dropped the tools that were in my hand. I stepped away from the machine to see my mother standing in the doorway. "What are you doing here, Adara?"
"I should be asking you that, Mother," I responded.
"I work here."
"Not in this section. This section is reserved for Dr. Banner and any research S.H.I.E.L.D. requests from him. You don't have the right to be over here."
"I do when I find out my daughter is working for S.H.I.E.L.D. without my knowledge, and not only that, she is playing babysitter for an extremely high-level criminal. I thought it was just rumored until I saw you yesterday with him," My mother said.
I laughed sarcastically, "Haven't you always wanted me here? Or are you just mad because even though you know I'm close, you have no control over what I do? I'm under orders from Director Fury."
"You're my daughter. I can and will be able to decide what is best for you," My mother retaliated.
"Since when have you cared what is best for me? I've always been your failure. Nothing I do matters as long as I have my powers. I'm just the monster you can't get rid of and will always burden you and your husband. Isn't that right?" I yelled. My body heat was rising. I needed her to leave and to cool down before I couldn't hold my powers back anymore. Even if I didn't like my mother, I didn't want to harm an innocent person.
"I just wanted you to live as normal of a life as you could."
"Is that why you constantly look at me like I'm going to take everything you care about away from you. You were so focused on me not using the powers that I can't control them anymore. You made me feel like an outsider."
"Because you almost killed someone last time you used your powers," My mother snapped.
"I was being manipulated by that asshole, and you weren't any help, were you? You let it happen. In fact, you enabled him to prove your point that all I will be able to do is bring destruction. You never tried to find an actual solution. You just wanted me to be contained," I argued. With how much heat I was radiating at this moment, I'm sure my eyes were bright red. At any moment, my powers would force their way out and destroy the room I was in. However, my mother didn't seem to notice. She just wanted to argue.
She laughed, "Don't blame others for something that was your own fault. You knew better, and yet you still allowed him to know about your powers. You lost control and almost killed an innocent person. That was all you. Not him and definitely not me."
"Get out," I said in frustration, but also for her safety. I was feeling my powers getting overwhelming.
"What did you just say to me?" My mother scoffed.
I yelled, "You need to get out now. Unless you want another incident, you need to leave. I'm not able to hold myself back much longer, but you are too self-absorbed to realize my powers are taking over. If you want to stay unharmed, get out."
My mother observed me. Once she realized I was right, and my powers were getting stronger each second, she left. I thought I could return to normal since she was gone, but I was wrong. I had hit the point where I couldn't cool down.
I made my way to the back corner, just feeling like I was going to blow up at any second. I sat down and curled up into the ball. I thought that if I was as small as I could make myself and away from everything important, then maybe I wouldn't do any significant damage once I passed out.
Focusing on myself and my powers, I didn't hear the door open back up. I didn't realize someone was there until Jason said, "Adara. Shit, what happened?"
"Get out," I growled.
"Fuck," Jason shouted. It was clicking in his head what was happening. It was an all too familiar scene that haunted the both of us. He was there the night of the incident. He knows what happens when I cannot reel my powers back.
"Get out, Jason," I demanded. I knew he didn't want to leave me to face this alone. "I don't know how much damage I'll do, and I don't want you to be in harm's way. I'm going to pass out soon." With my body radiating too much heat, I felt my eyes get heavy. It was going to be any second before the destruction.
"You'll be okay, Adara," A voice whispered in my ear as I lost consciousness. The last thing I remember was a pair of arms wrapping around me.
Sorry for not updating for a few months. Just a lot going on at the moment. I have a few original stories I've been working on, plus I work a full-time job, and soon I'll be moving across the United States for a different job, so I don't know how often I'll update
