Chapter 4

Caleb's POV

I walked up the sidewalk outside the admissions office with Pogue. I was finding out about Chase tonight. I was worried for my friends and my family. After things in the pool, I was concerned. I was currently on the phone with Sarah for the last couple of minutes.

"So will I see you tonight?" She asked me.

"I sure hope so. Uh, listen. I have something to do first. But, I'll call you later, okay?" I said looking around.

"I'll be in my room." She said before we hung up. I put my phone away in my pocket.

"What did she say about Kate? Why won't she call me back?" Pogue asked me.

"She's still pissed at you." I told him. I walked over to the small wall and hopped over.

"Why are we doing this again?" He asked.

"Cause I saw the darkling again." I said.

"Yeah, but why break into admissions office?" He asked.

"Cause I want to know more about Chase Collins." I said. He hopped over and wiped the rain off his jacket.

"Look, I don't even like the guy. Are you sure you're not just imagining this?" He said sighing.

"I'm telling you his eyes were as black as night in the pool yesterday." I said. He nodded. We ran through the rain to the office. Once we got in, I used to open the doors. I looked at him as we dug through the files.

"How's Bella? She's been staying with you, right?" I asked him.

"Yeah, she has. But I don't know man. This darkling is keeping her up. She's not sleeping but when she does it's all nightmares. Even curled up to me." He said sighing. I rubbed my face and sighed.

"She should be home." I said.

"Dude like Kate with me, she's still pissed at you." He scoffed. I shook my head and grabbed Chase's file. His parents and adoptive parents were dead. He was well past 18 too. His birth name was Pope. We left after almost getting caught.

"Goodwin Pope. Goodwin Pope. Agnes Goodwin Pope. That's where I heard it before." I said stopping Pogue.

"What're you talking about?" He asked confused.

"The Book of Damnation. They use to call her Goody Pope. Do you remember her?" I said trying to get him to think.

"I haven't read the Book since we were kids." He said shaking his head. I sighed frustrated.

"Just call Reid and Tyler. I'll pick up Bella." I said walking off. I went by Pogue's and knocked on the door. It swung open and Bella poked her head out.

"What're you doing here?" She asked sighing.

"We need to go to the Colony House. Let's go. The others are meeting us there." I told her. She eyed me before grabbing her bag and jacket. I drove us out to the house. We parked and walked inside and down to the basement. Bella went to Tyler and Reid hugging them. Then stayed by Pogue's side.

"I told them everything. About the darkling, what we found in his file." Pogue said.

"Well, that would've been a nice conversation in the car." Bella scoffed. I ignored her and flashed my eyes. The Book of Damnation was brought to the middle. The fire lit around the stone table then we all sat down.

"It's a list of names who broufht charges against john Putnam and his family during the Salem Hunt. Pope was one of them. Goody Pope. Widow of Jacob, mother to Hagen." I told them.

"So what?" Reid asked.

"So, she claims that John Putnam came to her as an incubus in her dreams after she was widowed. The Book also records births and deaths during the damnation. Goody Popes husband, Jacob, died June 4th, 1692. Her son, Hagen, was born April 11th 1693. That's 10 months and 24 days later." I explained. The book slammed shut and dropped on the table. I saw Bella jump from her place by Pogue.

"If what you're saying is true and Hagen Pope is the bastard son of John Putnam, then the fifth bloodline in the Covenant didn't end in Salem." Tyler said.

"And Chase is one of us." I said sighing.

"That's crazy. He can't be." Reid argued.

"The night after the party at the Dells, someone was using. The Power was strong enough to wake me out of a dead sleep. The next night it happened again." I explained.

"I felt it then." Pogue said nodding.

"See? I told you. I felt it too." Tyler said. I looked back at Reid.

"When you said it wasn't you, were you lying?" I asked him.

"No." He said looking at me.

"Swear?" I asked.

"I swear." He said. I sighed.

"Then it was him." I said. Bella stood up and started pacing.

"That explains it. The nightmares of the kid. The cold, burning of the power being used on him, the pain he felt as Chase killed him! That explains the ID card in the backseat! Oh. Oh, god." She said freezing in her spot. Pogue stood up and grabbed her arms.

"What?" He asked.

"He was using against me when I wrecked. He's the one that's been using against me, the headaches, nose bleeds. But the dream the other night, it." She said sniffling. She looked at me. Fire rose in her eyes. She stormed up to me as I stood up.

"He used on you! He used on you and you didn't tell me! How could you not tell me! I asked you! and you couldn't give me a straight answer!" She yelled at me. She started hitting my chest. Pogue and Tyler pulled her away from me. She turned into Tyler and let out a sob. My phone rung. I pulled it out of my jacket pocket and saw Sarah's name.

"Hey, can I call you." I started.

"Caleb, Kate's been attacked." She sobbed.

"Wait, wait. What?" I asked her.

"The doctors say it's like she's been bitten by spiders. And I had this terrible nightmare about spiders. I'm scared, Caleb. Something weird is happening." She said sighing. I looked around at everyone.

"Okay, listen to me. I want you to go back to your dorm and wait for me there. I'll see you soon, okay?" I told her.

"Okay." She said hanging up. I sighed.

"He's put a spell on Kate." I said.

"What're you talking about? What kind of spell?" Pogue asked angrily.

"Creation. Spiders. They're taking her to the hospital in Gloucester. Wait. don't do anything." I said. He was already headed up the stairs.

"Were talking about Kate!" He yelled.

"Pogue! Please, wait!" Bella yelled out. She ran after him. We ran after her. Pogue was already gone and she was standing by my car.

"Ugh! Idiot! I know he loves her but he should've waited!" She snapped. She started pacing again.

'What do we do now?" Reid asked.

"Take Bella home and wait for me there. I'm gonna go to Sarah." I said sighing. Bella groaned. I looked at her. She had her hands in her hair and her eyes shut tightly. She took a deep breath, stopped pacing, and groaned again.

"Bells?" Tyler asked.

"Pogue. Ah! No! He. No!" She grunted. She clutched her side and fell to her knees. I ran to her side.

"Bella?" I asked worriedly. She opened her eyes and tears were coming down.

"He's hurt. Pogue's hurt." She sobbed to me. That's one power I hated her having. Every time one of us were hurt, she could feel and see it. I looked at Reid and Tyler.

"You two go to Pogue. I'm taking Bella with me." I said lifting her up. I put her in the car and we all left.

"He hurt Pogue. Why is he hurting them?" She said sniffling. I looked over at her. She was crying again.

"I'm not sure, baby girl. I'm not sure." I said softly. We pulled up to the dorms and got out. We walked up to Sarah and Kates room. I knocked on the door. Bella grabbed my arm.

"What?" I asked her.

"He's here." She said as the door opened. Sarah gasped, looked behind her then back at me. She disappeared. I stormed in and Chase held his hand up to me.

"Stop right there. Close the door." He told us. Bella shut the door. She tried to step around me but I kept her behind me. Chase scooted up Sarah's bed.

'Let's just keep this between the Sons and Daughter of Ipswich." He said. He produced a spider from his fingers.

"Don't hurt her. She has nothing to do with this." I told him. I saw something wrap around Sarah. Chase smiled.

"Whether she lives or dies is entirely up to you my friend. You can't imagine what is was like growing up not knowing what this was. When I finally found my real father, he filled in the missing pieces. But it was too late. I was hooked. By then, he was such a bitter old man, or should I say bitter, old, young man that all he wanted to do was end the suffering. Like all our blood line before us, he was more than willing to break the laws of your sacred little club." He said rolling his eyes. Then he chuckled.

"So, I got him to give me his share of The Power. And he died knowing that his son was going to get revenge on your Covenant." He said. He looked down and saw the spider hadn't hurt Sarah yet. He chuckled again.

"Naughty little witch." He said. He flashed his eyes and Bella yelped. I grabbed her as she fell to her knees. She growled and looked at him.

"Why the hell are you doing this?" She seethed at him. He jumped up, knocking over a table. I stood up in front of her. Whatever she had put on Sarah went away and the spider went into her ear.

"I'm Chase Collins. I have everything I could possibly want. It's. it's what I need. More Power." He said. He looked around the room as he walked around.

"Tomorrow night, birthday boy. The exact moment, when you ascend, be at Putnam Barn, where you will, will me your power. Do that, and I'll let her live. And Pogue, Kate, your mom, Reid and Tyler and what's left of the families! And don't think I won't kill them. It comes natural to me. Just ask my adoptive parents." He said coming closer to us. Bella stood up.

"Why the kid at the Dells?" She asked.

"Well, he caught me doing a little magic. At first, he wasn't sure, but then, well, he wouldn't leave it alone. So, I caught a ride with him over to the bonfire." He said chuckling. He turned to Sarah and flashed his eyes. She started tossing and turning.

"What're you doing?" I asked him.

"Making sure, I made my point." He said. I flashed my eyes black. Bella held out her hand to Sarah and I saw the spider crawl out and disappear. Chase looked at us and grinned. He threw me into Bella, then up onto the ceiling. I slid from one side to the other then hit the floor. I heard Bella grunt again. I was slung back into Bella again. She groaned and pushed me off. Then I was thrown into the bathroom into the mirror.

"No!" Bella yelled. Chase came to the bathroom.

"Do you see my problem here? I like to use! A lot! Only, no one ever told me about the, uh effects, the damage, the addiction. And we all three know what happens now, don't we? So, the way I see it, I add your power to what I already have." He said chuckling. He pressed his boot to my chest.

"It won't stop the aging. Your father obviously found out the hard way." I grunted. He yanked me up.

"My father never had this kind of power." He growled.

"It doesn't work like that. It's the body that wears down, not the power." I hissed at him. He grabbed me roughly by the face.

"Then why does Baby girl out there, go through a power surge every few months? Hmm? You know, I was thinking of using her, but now I might just have to bring her along with me." He said laughing.

"You touch her, I'll kill you." I growled. He smiled.

"Just think of yourself as the sacrificial lamb. Hell, you're already their golden boy. Why not go out a real hero? So tomorrow night, the barn. Where it all started. A birthday party, just you and me. It's either you or them. Brother." He snapped. He grossly kissed me then got up. I watched him walk over to Bella. She glared up at him from her spot on the floor.

"Baby girl, such a fighter. How're the headaches?" He said laughing.

"Go to Hell where you belong." She growled. He used. She grunted and closed her eyes tightly. She must've used back cause he yelled angrily at her. He stood up, flung his hand out and she flew into the wall beside the bathroom. Then he left out the room angry. I crawled over to Bella who was knocked out. I got up, put her on the other bed and went to check on Sarah.

"What happened?" She asked groggily.

"You passed out when." I started.

'What?" She asked.

"Pogue's been in an accident." I told her.

"Is he okay?" She asked. I sighed and looked down. I had to tell her. I had to tell her our family secret. But it was to save and protect her, right?
