Episode Two

(Stood in a dark and dusty room inside the capsule, the Doctor and Princess are knelt down on the floor, with Ben and Polly stood around them. In between them is an outline of the base of a Dalek in the dust.)

DOCTOR: She's right. There were three Daleks in here.

PRINCESS: But does that mean this one was alive?

DOCTOR: No. No, I'm certain it was–

BEN: Doctor!

(Ben has spotted something. Polly, seeing it too, yelps, covering her mouth. The Doctor and Princess turn to look, catching sight of some mutated creature scurrying across the floor, slithering around in the shadows, before vanishing from sight)

DOCTOR: A light. A torch, outside.

BEN: Did you see it?

DOCTOR: Quickly, Ben, quickly!

(Ben runs out the capsule.)

POLLY: What was it?!

DOCTOR: Just stay back, Polly.

PRINCESS: It had to have been–

DOCTOR: (Hissing) Shush! All this talking might startle it.

(Ben rushes back in with torch shaped like a lamp, one that can be held by a handle at the base.)

POLLY: But what was it?

(The Doctor takes the lamp from Ben and carefully goes into the shadow of the room.)

BEN: It was a sort of disembodied hand. A sort of claw. It was horrible.

PRINCESS: It was a Dalek.

BEN: (Ponting to Daleks) But I thought you said those were the Daleks.

PRINCESS: Have you heard the saying about books and covers?

BEN: But what's that got to do with this?

POLLY: Wait… Do you mean there's something like that in…? (Disgusted noises)

PRINCESS: Yes.

BEN: What about those two?

PRINCESS: Yes, them as well.

BEN: Surely, they'd be dead by now.

PRINCESS: That one wasn't. I don't know much about the creatures inside those cases. The cases themselves need electricity, but as for the creatures…

(The Doctor is crouched by the wall, searching along the edge with the torch.)

DOCTOR: There's nothing here. It's gone.

PRINCESS: It can't just be gone.

(The Princess walks over to join the Doctor.)

DOCTOR: Well, there's no trail.

PRINCESS: I can see that. Well, actually, I can't, can I. Though that might just be the lighting. But I don't see anywhere it could have gone.

DOCTOR: Except back into its casing.

POLLY: But isn't that one from the missing Dalek?

PRINCESS: No, it would have had to have been inside to use the casing.

DOCTOR: That would be true if the Dalek moved on its own.

PRINCESS: You don't think that's the case?

DOCTOR: Where would it get the power from to do so? And why not share the source with the other two?

POLLY: So, someone moved the third Dalek then.

DOCTOR: And whoever did wouldn't have known what was inside. I suspect the one we just saw climbed out, after the first Dalek was moved.

POLLY: But who moved it?

BEN: Lesterson.

POLLY: But he hadn't opened the capsule.

BEN: No, he said he hadn't opened it. Let's get our facts straight.

DOCTOR: Excellent! Good thinking, good thinking.

(The Doctor strides out of the capsule with the Princess, Ben and Polly following.)

POLLY: Well, does that mean you think he's been inside?

BEN: And what about that thing, you said it might be inside the Dalek again. Shouldn't we do something?

DOCTOR: If the Dalek is back in its casing, then there's nothing we can do about it. No, I'm more concerned about Lesterson.

PRINCESS: Perhaps he's taken it away to experiment on it.

DOCTOR: Yes, that's what I was thinking.

POLLY: But you said they need electricity to work. Well, what if Lesterson's given it to one already.

PRINCESS: Then we may be too late.

BEN: Oh, blimey, you don't half make mountains, don't you? I mean, what's one Dalek gonna do?

DOCTOR: One Dalek is all that is needed to wipe out this entire colony!

(Polly is worried, while Ben is taken aback, but quickly dismisses concerns.)

BEN: Well…all right, I guess even one Dalek could be a bother. The real Doctor and Princess said as much before too.

POLLY: The real Doctor?

PRINCESS: The real Princess?

DOCTOR: Real Doctor? Oh, you mean the real Doctor and Princess.

PRINCESS: But aren't we them? I thought we already had this discussion.

BEN: Well…yeah, but you didn't–

PRINCESS: Besides, what the Doctor and Princess said isn't what matters at the moment. It's the Daleks that are the dangerous ones, not us.

POLLY: If they are that dangerous, what are you going to do about it?

DOCTOR: Save our breath. Would Lesterson listen? Lesterson listen. Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen. Exercises the tongue, try it. Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen.

BEN: Look, they think you two are the Examiners, order them to destroy the Daleks. Well, chuck your weight about.

PRINCESS: & POLLY: Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen.

(The Doctor, Princess and Polly begin to jump around in a circle, holding hands as the say–)

DOCTOR & PRINCESS & POLLY: Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen–

LESTERSON: What do you think you're doing in here?!

(Lesterson has entered the laboratory with an assistant. Having been caught, Polly stops speaking and dancing as does the Doctor. The Princess, however, skips over to Lesterson. She then takes his hands, and slowly begins to pull him towards the capsule.)

PRINCESS: Lesterson listen, Lesterson listen. (To Doctor) Your right, it is a good exercise. This mouth is rather good for speaking I'm finding. Oh, I could talk all day, I could. (To Lesterson) Wouldn't you like to listen to me? I would. I could listen to me talk all day. I could be on the radio. Don't know if I could sing, though. Haven't conducted enough tests yet. I could present though, that's a thing shows need. But how would I do my magic tricks on the radio?

(The Princess has pulled Lesterson inside the capsule, who is confused and unable to get a word in.)

PRINCESS: (Continuing) Maybe television would be better for me. Then people would get to see my top hat. I do like my hat, don't you? The Doctor has one too, but I think mine is better. It's not as damaged as his. No, wait…his isn't damaged yet, is it? It will be damaged though. How do I know that? I never used to get these premonitions, it's a new thing. Not sure I like it all that much. Takes the fun out of it when I know what's going to happen before it does. Like I can see the crossword answers before I've written them. It saves time I suppose. Do you do crosswords, Lesterson? (Waves to the open door, beyond which, the Daleks are visible) Oh, by the way, we managed to get this door open, have you seen inside yet. Take a look.

(Lesterson looks inside, adjusting his glasses, after being overwhelmed by the Princess's fast talking.)

LESTERSON: Hmm, yes, yes, I can see you've opened the compartment. Huh, how–how did you–

PRINCESS: Oh, it was nothing. I just used the magic words.

LESTERSON: Now, look here–

PRINCESS: No, it was, 'Abracadabra.' 'Look here,' doesn't really work as a magic word, since it's two words. Could be a magic phrase though.

LESTERSON: Now, look here! Who gave you permission to enter my laboratory and tamper with this capsule?

DOCTOR: Earth did.

LESTERSON: What?

(The Doctor takes off and holds up his Examiner badge to Lesterson.)

DOCTOR: Read this. Aloud.

LESTERSON: (Reading) Accord every access.

DOCTOR: Exactly!

PRINCESS: Well done!

DOCTOR: It doesn't say, 'except your laboratory,' anywhere, does it? Unless it's in micro-print.

(The Doctor takes out his magnifying glass to make sure there in no micro-print on the badge.)

LESTERSON: I should have been asked first.

PRINCESS: Is there any micro-print?

(The Doctor puts away his magnifying glass.)

DOCTOR: No, there isn't.

LESTERSON: I don't care if you are Examiners, you can't just–

DOCTOR: (To Ben) What was the first thing you noticed when you looked inside that capsule?!

BEN: Well, the–the Daleks!

DOCTOR: You were astounded?

POLLY: Yes.

DOCTOR: Amazed?

BEN: Yes.

DOCTOR: (To Lesterson) You didn't even give them a glance just now when the Princess showed you them! Why? Because you'd been in there and seen them!

PRINCESS: Where is the third Dalek, Lesterson?

LESTERSON: I don't know what you're talking about.

PRINCESS: Then let us explain. Those machines in there, they're called Daleks. There were three, we know this for a fact.

LESTERSON: How could you possibly–

DOCTOR: Because we saw the dust outline on the floor. An outline left behind by the Dalek you removed from the capsule, after you opened it up without permission. And once you had, you hid it!

LESTERSON: Hid it? What–what nonsense!

PRINCESS: Actually, it makes perfect sense.

DOCTOR: Tell us where it is, Lesterson.

LESTERSON: I…I…

(At that moment, Bragen enters the laboratory with two guards behind him.)

BRAGEN: May I ask what all this is about?

(The Doctor and Princess are too busy staring at Lesterson to answer. Lesterson is made uneasy by their staring.)

POLLY: We opened an inner compartment in the capsule, and Lesterson had already been in there.

LESTERSON: I don't deny that.

BEN: And he's nicked a Dalek!

BRAGEN: Dalek?

LESTERSON: It's the name the Examiners have given to the two metal creations that I've discovered inside the capsule.

BEN: And they're dangerous. Evil.

LESTERSON: Lumps of metal. Quite inactive.

BEN: That's what you think, mate. If you'd seen–

(The Doctor sharply plays on his flute, cutting Ben off. While everyone is looking at the Doctor, the Princess catches Ben's eye and puts her finger to her lips.)

LESTERSON: I consider it my duty as a scientist to examine and investigate these objects. Now please, all of you, keep out of my laboratory. Keep your hands off my experiments!

DOCTOR: These lumps of metal, Daleks, I want them broken up, or melted down. Up or down, I don't care which, but destroyed!

LESTERSON: I refuse to allow it!

PRINCESS: We're Earth Examiners. And in the interest of safety, we want the Daleks to be destroyed.

BRAGEN: Safety?

PRINCESS: Yes, safety!

LESTERSON: You're exceeding your authority!

DOCTOR: Perhaps we should ask the Governor about that? I wish to see him immediately.

BRAGEN: That might be difficult.

DOCTOR: But not impossible.

BRAGEN: I'll…I'll see what I can do.

DOCTOR: Good.

BRAGEN: In the meantime, why don't you return to your quarters and I'll come–

PRINCESS: Oh, we're quite happen here, aren't we?

DOCTOR: Very much so. With all this scientific equipment to keep ourselves occupied.

PRINCESS: Oh, let's roast marshmallows on the Bunsen burners!

BRAGEN: I think it would be in everyone's best interests if I return you to your quarters.

DOCTOR: How so?

BRAGEN: (Takes a moment to reply) I can have food brought to you. And…I'd like a word in privet.

DOCTOR: Ah, I see. And it would be rude to kick Lesterson out of his own laboratory.

BRAGEN: Yes…quite.

PRINCESS: (Sighing) Oh well. We'll go back to our room. But first…

(The Princess strides up to Bragen, holding out her deck of cards.)

PRINCESS: Pick a card?

BRAGEN: No thank you.

PRINCESS: (Serious) I said pick a card.

(Bragen hesitates, then takes the top card from the deck. The Princess spreads out the cards in her hands.)

PRINCESS: Now, put it back in the deck.

(Bragen does so. The Princess then begins shuffling the cards.)

PRINCESS: Now, by the time we get back to the room, I'll have found your card.

(The Princess begins to walk out, with the Doctor, Bragen, Polly, Ben and the guards following as the return to their room.)

(A short while later, the time travellers are walking down a corridor with Bragen and his two men. As they do, the Princess pulls out a card and shows it to Bragen.)

PRINCESS: Is this your card?

BRAGEN: …No.

DOCTOR: (Chuckling) He doesn't seem amused.

PRINCESS: It must be this deck.

BEN: Either that or you don't know what you're doing.

PRINCESS: Of course, I know what I'm doing. It's the cards, definitely. (To Bragen) You wouldn't happen to have a deck on you, would you?

BRAGEN: (Irritated) No, I wouldn't.

PRINCESS: There's no need to get annoyed, I was only asking a question. Besides, if you'd let us stay in the laboratory, I wouldn't have needed to do the trick to amuse myself.

BEN: Ah, but you haven't done the trick, have you?

(The Princess huffs as they enter their room.)

BRAGEN: You must understand, Lesterson watches over his ideas like a mother hen. Annoying I know, but he's best left alone.

DOCTOR: And if one of his projects was a bomb about to go off, would you have us ask permission first before disarming it?! (A guard enters, carrying a bowl of fruit) Ah ha, fruit!

(The Doctor happily takes the bowl of fruit from the guard and takes it over to the table. He then hands out the fruit amongst his friends. He gives Polly a banana, Ben an apple and the Princess a stem of grapes.)

POLLY: Thank you.

(Polly peels her banana and starts to eat, as the Princess plucks off a grape and drops it into her mouth.)

PRINCESS: Yum!

BRAGEN: Examiner–

DOCTOR: Examiners.

BRAGEN: Examiners, it's up to the two of you, of course, but I'd advise a little discretion in your investigations. It's not a very good time, just now.

PRINCESS: Why, what time is it? It's not twelve o'clock is it?

POLLY: What's wrong with twelve o'clock?

PRINCESS: Well for one thing it gives me hiccups.

BEN: How can a time of day give you hiccups?

PRINCESS: How can fully-grown humans scream at the sight of insects which are ten times as small and harmless.

POLLY: Well, it's in our heads.

PRINCESS: Exactly. And my head it's a bit of a mess right now. The top hat helps keep things straight though.

POLLY: I think it suits you, Princess.

PRINCESS: Thank you, Polly!

(Bragen clears his throat, getting everyone's attention.)

DOCTOR: Oh, sorry, did you want some?

(The Doctor offers Bragen a grapefruit from the bowl.)

BRAGEN: No, thank you. As I was saying, it's not a very good time just now, what with all these disturbances.

POLLY: Disturbances?

PRINCESS: Is that what you wanted to talk to us about?

BRAGEN: Yes, minor acts of sabotage. Rebel cliques, secret newspapers, nothing important you understand, but it keeps the Governor busy. I've no doubt he'll tell you about it himself when I arrange your meeting with him.

PRINCESS: Then why did you want to tell us about it in privet?

BRAGEN: I just wanted you to be aware before the meeting. And I didn't want to mention it in front of Lesterson, he's relatively sheltered from all of that.

DOCTOR: How thoughtful. Fruit?

(The Doctor offers the same piece of grapefruit.)

BRAGEN: No, I'm fine, thank you. Would you put that down, please?

DOCTOR: Certainly.

(The Doctor drops the grapefruit back into the bowl.)

BEN: So, when will we be meeting the governor then?

BRAGEN: He's going on a tour of the perimeter of the colony. I'll find out if he can see you before he goes.

POLLY: Thank you.

(Bragen then leaves, with the Doctor watching him as he goes. As the door closes, the Princess helps herself to some more grapes.)

PRINCESS: Polly, catch!

(The Princess throws a grape up and over to Polly, who catches it with her mouth. The Princess cheers and applauds her as Polly celebrates and chews the grape.)

BEN: You know, it's little things like this that make it difficult to believe that you're the Doctor and the Princess. The other ones– I mean, the proper ones– Oh, nuts, you know what I mean.

PRINCESS: No, no nuts I'm afraid. I have grapes. Do you want one?

BEN: No.

PRINCESS: More for me.

(The Princess eats her grapes.)

BEN: You, my old china, are an out and out phoney.

DOCTOR: China! Yes, we went there once I believe. (Takes out his diary and begins flicking through the pages) Met Marco Polo.

PRINCESS: That's right!

BEN: No, not China! China! China and plate – mate – friend.

PRINCESS: Yes, you're right, Ben, he was a friend. How did you know that, where you there? (To Doctor) Oh, I promised we'd go back, didn't I? I need to thank him for what he did for us.

POLLY: Don't listen to him you two. I know who you both are.

PRINCESS: Well, thank goodness somebody does.

(Polly giggles before the Doctor suddenly shushes her, putting his finger to his lips. Everyone goes quiet, as Polly and Ben look to one another confused. The Princess is also confused, but they all watch as the Doctor removes the grapefruit from the fruit bowl. Then, taking out the curved knife from before, the Doctor cuts the fruit in half, revealing a small device inside the fruit. The Doctor carefully picks it up.)

POLLY: It's a–

(The Princess puts her hand over Polly's mouth, then puts her finger to her lips. Polly nods in understanding, as the Princess removes her hand. The Doctor, meanwhile, sets the small device down on the table, before smashing it with his fist.)

BEN: Well, well, a touch of the bugs.

PRINCESS: Bugs? (Looking around the floor) Where?

BEN: No, I mean microphones.

POLLY: Someone's been listening to what we were saying!

BEN: Yeah, so that's why you two were messing about and talking nonsense.

DOCTOR: We never talk nonsense.

POLLY: Ahem.

PRINCESS: She does have a point.

DOCTOR: All right, then, we take a bit more than we used to.

BEN: Well, they certainly believe in making us at home, don't they?

DOCTOR: At first, I thought there might be more than one.

(The Doctor takes a banana and breaks it in half, but there's nothing inside it. Polly, the Princess and Ben all giggle at the Doctor's slight embarrassment.)

BEN: Here, I bet old Charlie Bragen did it.

PRINCESS & POLLY: Charlie?

BEN: Well, 'Fred,' wouldn't suit him, would it?

DOCTOR: Let's just stick to Bragen for now.

POLLY: Well, if he did do it, do you think it was his own idea? I mean, he could have been under orders.

BEN: You mean from the Governor? I doubt it. What do you think, Doctor?

(The Doctor has taken out the button from before.)

DOCTOR: Let's consider this button for a moment. It's the only clue we've got to the murderer of the Examiner. The real Examiner.

PRINCESS: Or is it?

BEN: What do you mean?

PRINCESS: Well, it's a bit odd, isn't it? Someone kills the Examiner right in front of us, but rather than kill us, he simply knocks us out, then leaves us a button so we can identify him later.

BEN: Well, when you put it like that, yeah, it is a bit strange.

DOCTOR: You may be right, Princess. But it's all we have at the moment.

POLLY: Well, what about who called the Examiner?

PRINCESS: That's a good question. It's unlikely the murderer would call him here, only to kill him.

DOCTOR: (Pondering) But still possible…

BEN: Well, Lesterson's crackers about that capsule, he wouldn't want anyone nosing about.

PRINCESS: That's one down, what about the rest?

POLLY: Bragen said the Governor's been having trouble.

BEN: Nah, rule him out. Governors are all the same. He wouldn't ask for help. If he sent the word it would look as if he couldn't do the job properly.

POLLY: Yes. Well, what about Bragen himself. Maybe he thinks the governor can't handle it.

PRINCESS: Perhaps. But then why tell us to conduct our investigations quietly? It sounded like he wanted us to stop looking, in case we find something we shouldn't.

POLLY: Maybe he's worried for your safety.

BEN: I doubt. He didn't seem the caring type… Oh, well, I vote we go back to the Tardis. I've had enough of this dump.

DOCTOR: Have you? What about the Daleks?

BEN: Well, they're dead.

POLLY: What about that thing we saw in the capsule? That was alive all right.

BEN: Yeah, I can't explain that.

DOCTOR: I can. And that's why we have to stay.

POLLY: But what's so bad about these Daleks, Doctor?

DOCTOR: They cause nothing but misery and destruction wherever they go. We can't just leave when we're in a position to do something about it.

PRINCESS: (Distant) But there's something else. Something I can't quite picture. Something we're…heading towards…

POLLY: What are you heading towards, Princess?

(The Princess continues to stare off into space, until a knock at the door brings her out of it. Bragen then enters the room with two of his guards.)

DOCTOR: Well? Where is the Governor? What did he say?

BRAGEN: He sends his apologies, Examiners. He can't see you tonight, but he hopes to see you first thing in the morning.

PRINCESS: But this is important, it can't wait until morning. It must be discussed now!

BRAGEN: It will have to.

(The Doctor puts on his top hat and takes the Princess's arm.)

DOCTOR: Then excuse us.

BEN: Where are you going?

DOCTOR: To see the Governor, of course.

(Bragen and his guards quickly block the doorway.)

BRAGEN: I'm afraid that's not possible. Once his door is closed, no one, not even you, Examiner, is allowed into his room.

(The Doctor and Princess stare at Bragen and his guards for a moment. Then look to each other. The Doctor whispers something to the Princess, who then whispers back. They continue this for a moment before stopping.)

DOCTOR: Very well, we'll wait until morning to see the governor.

PRINCESS: But we're not happy about it.

BRAGEN: Thank you for your patience. Until the morning then.

(Bragen and his guards leave, the door closing behind them.)

BEN: Well, that's that then.

PRINCESS: (To Doctor) Shall we go now?

DOCTOR: Give it another minute.

BEN: But you said–

PRINCESS: We said we'd wait to see the governor until morning. But that doesn't mean we're going to sit around here and do nothing.

POLLY: Well, what are you going to do?

DOCTOR: We shall radio Earth. Governor or not, Hensell will have to listen to them.

BEN: But won't Earth know you're not the real examiner?

PRINCESS: We'll just have to explain everything that's happened, including the Examiner's murder and hope that's enough to convince them.

POLLY: Do you want us to come with you?

DOCTOR: No, you two stay here. We won't be long. If anyone comes looking for us, stall them.

(The Doctor opens the door, pokes his head out and sees the corridor is empty. The Doctor waves for the Princess to follow and she does, before the two briskly make their way down the corridor.)

(A short while later, in another corridor, the Doctor and Princess approach a door, when suddenly the Doctor stops them both. The Princess goes to speak, but the Doctor puts his finger to his lips. The Princess remains silent. The Doctor then points to the door, which is open ajar. The Princess frowns, curious, while the Doctor continues on. She then catches up to him, as the Doctor peers inside. The lights are off inside, the room is dark. But in the centre of the room, a console can be seen, which runs from floor to ceiling. Seeing nobody inside, the Doctor enters with the Princess behind him. Almost immediately, the Princess stops the Doctor, pointing to something on the floor. Before the console, lies a body. The Doctor and Princess crouch down, as the Doctor checks the man's pulse.)

DOCTOR: He's alive. Just unconscious.

(From across the room, they hear movement. Both the Doctor and Princess look up, as Quinn steps out of the shadows.)

QUINN: Examiners, thank goodness. I've been trying to talk to you both ever since you got here–

(The lights are turned on suddenly, the room bathed in light. At the door, now fully open, Bragen stands with several of his guards.)

BRAGEN: What's happening here? Examiners?

DOCTOR: We found this man unconscious.

PRINCESS: Do you know who he is?

BRAGEN: He's the communications operator.

QUINN: He was like that when I first arrived too. I was just looking at him when I heard someone coming. (To Doctor & Princess) It must have been you two.

BRAGEN: And those?

(In his hands, Quinn is holding a pair of wire cutters.)

QUINN: I picked them up. What is all this?

(The Doctor looks at the base of the communications console.)

DOCTOR: The cables have been cut.

QUINN: What?! (Looks for himself) This is serious. It's not just our own communications. We're cut off from Earth as well.

BRAGEN: The only people that would want to do that are the rebels.

QUINN: If those muscle boys of yours had any brains, they'd stop things like this.

DOCTOR: (To Princess, quietly) I'm going to try something. (Aloud) Bragen, we were attacked just after we landed. (Shows him the button) This is a small souvenir that I collected.

BRAGEN: (To Quinn) This button belongs to you, doesn't it?

QUINN: Well…yes.

(Bragen snatches the wire cutters from Quinn.)

BRAGEN: And you say you picked these up? I suggest that you were sabotaging the communications–

QUINN: That's a lie.

BRAGEN: (Continuing) Having first attacked the operator. I'd detain the Governor on evidence like that.

QUINN: I hope you're not thinking of detaining me, Bragen.

BRAGEN: I've no option. I could hardly let you run around loose after this, could I? All right, guards.

QUINN: I warn you, Bragen!

(Bragen's guards quickly enter and surround Quinn, two even grabbing him by the arms. Quinn, realising his situation, resigns himself for now.)

QUINN: All right, you win this round, Bragen. We'll see what it looks like in front of the Governor.

(The guards holding Quinn escort him out of the room, while the rest remain with Bragen, the Doctor and Princess.)

BRAGEN: The Governor will want an enquiry. May I ask what you two were doing here?

PRINCESS: We were going to call Earth.

BRAGEN: The Earth, what for?

DOCTOR: To inform them about the Daleks.

PRINCESS: Since you refuse to do anything about them.

BRAGEN: Well…the point is mute now. You'll have to take up the matter with the govern when you get the chance.

DOCTOR: That's very convenient, wouldn't you say, Bragen? We're about to report to Earth about the Daleks, and then the communications are suddenly destroyed for no reason whatsoever.

BRAGEN: Hmm… Yes, you may have a point. I'll mention it to the governor.

PRINCESS: I thought he was indisposed, and no one could see him?

BRAGEN: That's true, but I'll be seeing him in the morning.

PRINCESS: Why don't we come with you?

BRAGEN: Don't worry, Examiner, you'll be seeing the governor tomorrow, I can assure you of that. Now, it's even later than before, why don't you both try and get some sleep before sun rise?

PRINCESS: I've not tried sleeping yet. I wonder if it'll be different. Maybe I'll have different dreams.

BRAGEN: I'm sorry.

DOCTOR: I think we'll take you up on your suggestion, Bragen. Come along…Examiner. (To Bragen) Don't worry, we know the way back.

(The Doctor leads the Princess out of the room, with Bragen watching them closely as they go.)

(The next morning, the Doctor is sat by the window in the time traveller's room, playing his recorder. The Princess is sat on the floor, playing solitaire, and Play and Ben are sat on the bed discussing recent events.)

POLLY: But we've got to defend Quinn.

BEN: Yeah, I know. He's innocent until he's proved guilty. But he is guilty.

POLLY: He's the Deputy Governor.

BEN: So what? I had a headmaster once who got nicked for not paying his bus fare. And then there's the motive. Don't forget the motive.

POLLY: Like what, for instance?

BEN: Well, he's the Deputy Governor, right? Maybe he wants to be Governor.

POLLY: Oh, that's ridiculous.

BEN: Well, the jacket button wasn't. And he was caught red-handed in the Communications room with a pair of wire cutters.

PRINCESS: It almost seems like the perfect arrest.

BEN: What do you mean?

PRINCESS: Only what I said.

POLLY: Do you think it was planned?

BEN: By who?

PRINCESS: Can I say something?

BEN: What?

PRINCESS: I'm bored playing solitaire, can someone else play with me?

BEN: Oh look, we're trying to have a serious discussion over here!

(The door to the room opens and Bragen enters, his guards lingering at the door. The Doctor stops playing his recorder.)

BRAGEN: Good morning. The enquiry is about to begin. I've been sent to escort you.

PRINCESS: Just give me a minute to pick these up.

(The Princess starts picking up her cards, as Bragen rolls his eyes.)

(A short while later, the Doctor, Princess, Polly and Ben are escorted into the governor's office by Bragen and his guards. Inside, waiting, are Hensell, who's behind his desk, Quinn, who's sat in a seat before the desk, and two guards that stand either side of Quinn.)

HENSELL: I am sorry I couldn't see you earlier, Examiners. Please sit down.

PRINCESS: Thank you, Governor.

(The time travellers sit down in the empty seats behind Quinn. Bragen moves to stand next to Hensell.)

HENSELL: Well, Quinn, I don't like this any more than you do. What have you been up to?

QUINN: Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

HENSELL: Well, what about Bragen's report then? (Taps paper) These are facts, Quinn. Now, what have you got to say about it?

QUINN: Does the operator say I hit him?

BRAGEN: How could he if he was hit from behind?

QUINN: Then it's only circumstantial evidence.

BRAGEN: The Examiners were also attacked in the mercury swamp. We have a button from your jacket found in the Examiner's hand.

(The Doctor and Princess exchange looks.)

QUINN: I can't explain that.

BRAGEN: I'm sure you can't.

HENSELL: Examiners. You both seem to be in two minds.

BEN: (Muttering) Yeah, and two bodies.

HENSELL: (Continuing) You mentioned to Bragen that these machines of Lesterson's. What do you call them?

DOCTOR: We call them what they are, Daleks.

HENSELL: Yes, yes, yes, Daleks. You say they could be a motive for destroying our communications.

DOCTOR: I do.

(Lesterson hurries into the room.)

HENSELL: Lesterson, this is a special enquiry! Now please–

LESTERSON: This won't wait! You won't be disappointed.

HENSELL: You heard what I said, Lesterson.

LESTERSON: Governor, I've just completed an experiment which could revolutionise the whole colony. Bear with me.

DOCTOR: Lesterson, what have you done? What have you done?!

LESTERSON: I'll show you. Janley, now!

(At the door, Janley stands. And from out of view, a Dalek, on its own, comes through the door. The time travellers all jump to their feet.)

PRINCESS: Stop it! Ben, Polly, keep out of its way!

HENSELL: What's going on here?!

LESTERSON: She's overreacting, just look at it, Governor.

(The Dalek moves around the room, everyone watching in astonishment. Except for the Doctor, who pushes the Princess behind him, both terrified. The Dalek looks at everyone with its eyestalk, before homing in on the Doctor and Princess. As it approaches them, the two back up nervously, before bumping into the wall. The Dalek stares at them for a moment, before turning around and gliding over to join Lesterson.)

BEN: (To Polly) It recognised them. It recognised the Doctor and Princess.

POLLY: What's the matter, Doctor, Princess? Are you all right?

DOCTOR: The fools. The stupid fools.

BEN: You're scared.

PRINCESS: Ben…if you knew what they were capable of… If you'd seen first-hand…

BEN: What can it do?

DOCTOR: Nothing…yet.

LESTERSON: (To Governor) This creation is called, I understand, a Dalek. Now, look at it. I have merely given it electrical power, but it is capable of storing it. Moreover, it responds to orders. (To Dalek) Turn around.

(The Dalek does a complete 360 turn.)

LESTERSON: Move that chair.

(The Dalek pushes an empty chair by gliding into it. The chairs scrapes against the floor as it is moved.)

LESTERSON: Stop.

(The Dalek stops.)

LESTERSON: (To Governor) You see? Well, just think what this could do for our mining program, our processing, packaging. Dozens of labour jobs, Governor. It may even supply the end to all this Colony's problems.

PRINCESS: Are you insane!

LESTERSON: Excuse me?

DOCTOR: It'll end the colony's problems all right, because it will end the colony!

DALEK: I am your servant.

(Everyone is shocked at what the Dalek has done.)

LESTERSON: It…it spoke. Janley, did you hear it? It can actually talk.

DOCTOR: It can do many things, Lesterson. But the thing it does most efficiently, is exterminate human beings.

DALEK: I am your servant.

DOCTOR: It destroys them–

DALEK: I am your servant.

DOCTOR: (Continuing) Without mercy–

DALEK: I am your servant.

DOCTOR: Without conscience–

DALEK: I am your servant!

DOCTOR: It destroys them!

DALEK: I am your servant!

DOCTOR: Utterly!

DALEK: I am your servant!

PRINCESS: Stop it!

DALEK: I am your servant!

DOCTOR: Completely!

DALEK: I am your servant!

PRINCESS: Make it stop!

DALEK: I am your servant!

DOCTOR: It destroys them!

DALEK: I am your servant! I am your servant! I am your servant! I am your servant…
