BEEEP! BEEEP! BEEEP! BEEEP!
Amelia's hand stretched out from under the covers to switch off her alarm.
"Amelia, it's 6:30 already," said the little Kwami. "If you don't wake up now you're going to be late."
"Mhm, five more minutes," the young girl mumbled..
Tella flew under the covers only to find her owner fast asleep once again. She tapped her face hoping that the red-haired girl would wake up but all she did was turn away.
"I said five minutes Tella" groaned Amelia.
Tella knew that her owner wasn't going to wake up any time soon so she decided to resort to her Emergency-Wake-Up-Amelia-Plan. She flew over to Amelia's phone which sat next to the alarm clock on the bedside table. She then carefully carried the phone and placed it on the pillow beside the redhead. Once the little brown kwami unlocked her owner's phone and increased the volume to the max, she then opened the sound app that she'd hidden specifically for this situation. She scrolled through the options until she found the one she was looking for.
PWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAARP!
"AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!" Amelia jumped up at the sound of an air horn blaring in her ears. "WHAT'S HAPPENING?!"
Tella immediately switched off the app. "Sorry, but you refused to wake up and were gonna be late for school so -"
"SO YOU DECIDED TO DEAFEN ME?!"
Just as magical creature was to defend herself, there was a knock on the door. Amelia quickly instructed Tella to hide before telling whoever it was to come in. She was surprised to see Nathalie enter her room and hoped that her uncle's assistant did not just hear her scream at the top of her lungs.
"Oh, good you're awake," said Nathalie in her regular expressionless voice. "Breakfast will be served in 15 minutes but before that, your uncle asked me to create a schedule for you now that you will be staying permanently. I assume you will want to resume fencing lessons with Mr. D'Argencourt and would also want me to schedule times for you and Adrien to spend time with each other. Will you be joining Adrien in his mandarin lessons?"
"Mandarin? No thank you. Knowing English is more than enough for me" Amelia let out a little chuckle.
"I assume that's a no then," Nathalie responded whilst working on her tablet. "Is there anything else you'd like me to include?"
"Um, no?" Amelia watched as nodded in acknowledgement and then proceeded to exit her room all while still keeping her eyes glued to the tablet.
Once Nathalie left, Tella whizzed out of her hiding place. "Amelia, you're late for school!"
"Oh shoot, school!" The young redhead quickly ran into the bathroom to get ready.
Today was the start of a brand-new school life for Amelia. Today, she didn't have to wait in line or tackle her fellow roommate in order to use the bathroom. Her clothes were already pressed and neatly hanging in the closet instead of having to press it herself in the morning. She could wear whatever clothes she wanted rather than forcing on the itchy uniform that she was required to wear at boarding school, so she chose to wear her signature blue blazer over a white blouse along with jeans and matching high tops. There was also no warden screaming at the top of her lungs, reminding everyone that late comers would not get breakfast. Although, she knew that if she did not hurry, she might just have to skip breakfast so that she and Adrien would make it to school on time. And of course, the best part of this new life was that she would get to go to school with her cousin. After being stuck in a boarding school filled with self-obsessed drama queens, Amelia was looking forward to what this new life had in store for her.
"Well, well, well, you're finally on time for breakfast for once," Adrien teased as his cousin entered the dining room.
"Of course," replied Amelia as she sat down next to the blonde boy. "Can't start my first day of school on an empty stomach."
As the young teens began to eat their breakfast, Amelia noticed a strange, pungent smell in the air. It was disgusting yet somehow familiar. She couldn't figure out what it was or why it was not an unknown smell to her. Following the nauseating stench, the young redhead noticed that it was coming from the tray near her cousin. "What's in there?" she asked, pointing at the silver dish.
"Oh, that's just Camembert," Adrien laughed nervously.
"Camembert? Since when do you eat camembert for breakfast?" the young redhead asked while trying not to gag.
"Since I heard its good for health." The blonde boy lifted the silver lid and shoved a piece of the stinky cheese into his mouth, leaving his cousin completely dumbfounded.
Not knowing how to react to this new information, Amelia continued to eat her breakfast. You and Plagg would be perfect for each other, she thought.
Just as the two teenagers finished their breakfast, Nathalie informed them that it was time to leave for school.
For the first time in a long while, Marinette's day had started on a good note. There were no akuma attacks in the middle of the night which gave her more than enough time to finish all the homework that was due for today. She even managed to go to bed an hour early and also woke up on time. For once, there was no rush. She could take her time to get ready while watching Adrien's perfume ad for the millionth time. When Alya called to wake her up, she'd already finished her breakfast and was already on her way downstair to the bakery.
"You're in a good mood today," Alya said as they walked up the stairs to their class.
"I don't know, today just feels like it's gonna be a good day." Marinette smiled.
The girls decided to stand in the overhang for a few more minutes since there was still some time for class. Alya had been showing Marinette the latest post on the LadyBlog when she saw the orange haired girl from the other day enter the courtyard with none other than Adrien Agreste.
"Hey Marinette, isn't that your friend from summer camp?" asked Alya.
"Where?" Marinette looked down at the courtyard, searching for her old friend.
"There, with Adrien." Alya pointed at the girl in the blue blazer.
Marinette calm demeanor vanished, and her eye widened with terror. Judging by the way Amelia and Adrien were interacting, they clearly knew each other which was a tiny yet important detail that the redhead failed to mention when they had met a few days ago.
"This is bad, this is really really bad," the bluenette began to panic.
"What's wrong, M?" asked a concerned Alya after seeing the instant flip in her BFF's mood.
"Amelia knows I'm in love with Adrien." Marinette was in complete freak out mode. "She probably has a crush on him as well, that's why she didn't say anything to me. And now that she knows about my crush, she's gonna use it to win him over. Adrien's gonna think I'm lame and then he's gonna fall for her. They'll go to the movies, hold hands and eat Andre's magic ice cream that will make them fall more in love. Next thing you know, they're gonna get married and live in a house with three kids and a hamster named-"
"MARINETTE!" shouted Alya as she shook her best friend back to reality. "Don't you think you're jumping the gun a little bit? You said that she was going to attend school with her cousin, right? What if Adrien is actually her cousin?"
"That doesn't make any sense. She saw the pictures of Adrien in my room and didn't say anything about him being her cousin." Marinette shook her head. "No way, she's definitely another girl who's in love with him."
"I don't know Marinette." Alya said looking down at the two of them. "I mean you've known this girl since summer camp, do you really think she's capably of something like that?"
Marinette watched as the golden-haired boy she'd been in love with all this time posed with her childhood friend to take a selfie. She knew that Amelia was not the type of person to do such a thing, that was more up Chloe and Lila's alley. But at the same time, she thought back to all the things she'd done for love like memorizing Adrien's schedule for the next three years, or the time she and the girls came up with the most convoluted plan to ask him out, and how can she ever forget the time she stole his phone in order to delete that embarrassing voicemail she accidentally left. She knew firsthand that love could make you do crazy things. "I- I don't know" she answered.
As Adrien and Amelia made their way up the stairs, the young redhead happened to see Marinette looking at them. The redhead waved at her friend with a smile. Oh shoot, she thought. Judging by the frown on Marinette's face when she waved back, it was clear that she was upset at the fact that Amelia failed to mention that the boy her friend was crushing on was also her cousin. Telling people that she was the cousin of world-famous model Adrien Agreste was a tricky task. How the opposite person reacted to the information varied from time to time. Some people would refuse to believe her and would make fun of her, whilst others would cling to her like a leech in the hopes that she would introduce them to him. Of course, Marinette would have never done either of those things, but it could have definitely made things awkward between them. Amelia knew that she would have to make it up to the friend big time, she just had to figure out how.
"Are you ready?" asked Adrien once they reached Mr. Damocles' office.
"Shouldn't I be asking you that?" the redhead bumped him with her shoulder. "I mean, once we go in, you're pretty much stuck with me for good."
"I'll take my chances"
"Suit yourself"
Mr. Damocles immediately ordered for them to enter as soon as he heard the knock on the door. Nathalie had already submitted all the necessary documents required for Amelia's transfer so all that was left for the principal to do was to place the young girl in a class. "We seem to be getting a lot of midterm transfers this year. First Lila, then Kagami and now you. I wonder what's going on in all those other fancy schools," commented Mr. Damocles as he scrolled through his computer. "Ah, there it is. You will be joining Ms. Bustier's class."
Mr. Damocles ushered the two kids to follow him to the class. However as if fate had already planned out everything, they happened to bump into Ms. Bustier outside his office. He introduced the teacher to her new student and informed her that they were on their way to her class. "Don't worry Mr. Damocles," she smiled. "I'll take them with me."
When they entered the classroom, Marinette's eyes widened in panic. She wasn't sure she could bear the embarrassment of Adrien knowing that she's in love with him. It wasn't too late just yet, she just had to get through half the day and then at lunch she could run home and beg her parents to transfer her to a new school. But being in a new school wouldn't guarantee that she wouldn't bump into them, perhaps she could convince then to let her move to Shanghai with her great uncle.
"Okay everyone, settle down now" Ms Bustier clapped her hands to get everyone's attention. "I'd like to introduce you all to Adrien's cousin and our new student, Amelia. She'll be joining our class from today."
"Cousin?" Marinette whispered.
"See girl, you were freaking out for nothing," whispered Alya.
Ms. Bustier's voice began to fade as Marinette tried to process this new piece of information. As much as she was relieved at the fact that Amelia was not in love with the love of her life, there was still one other problem. She knew that Marinette was in love with Adrien. What if she told him about it? What if he didn't like her back? What if he did like her back?
"Marinette," Ms. Bustier called out, disrupting the young designer's internal freak out. "Could you please show Amelia to the restroom?"
The two girls silently made their way downstairs, both trying to figure out how to start the conversation.
"I-," they said in unison. "You go first."
Once again, the cloud of awkward silence hovered over them until Marinette decided to break it. "Why didn't you tell me that Adrien was your cousin?"
Amelia focused her gaze on her shoes not wanting to make eye contact with her friend. "Telling people that I'm related to Gabriel and Adrien Agreste hasn't really been a fun experience over the years. Some people would literally go out of their way to make sure I was miserable, and others would only stick around so that I could try to make them a model or meet Adrien. Over the time, I learned that it's best not to mention them unless I knew what I was getting into with the other person."
"And when you saw all the pictures of Adrien in my room," Marinette prompted.
"I was surprised and overwhelmed. I didn't really know what to say. And then when I found out that he's your crush, I thought that knowing who I was to him might make our friendship awkward. I'm really sorry Marinette, I should have been honest with you from the start."
Marinette gave her friend a warm smile. "It's okay. I probably would have done the same thing too. I mean I can't imagine what it would be like to have people judge you based on who you're related to."
The two girls hugged each other, happy to have cleared out their misunderstandings.
"Wait," Marinette released the redhead from the hug. "Does Adrien know I'm in love with him?"
"Of course not," Amelia laughed. "I would never break a Coyote promise."
