Chapter 11: Truth
Once the door had been closed behind her, she walked over to one of the windows. Hitomi was still wondering why Merle didn't want to tell her... well, the truth or whatever it was the cat-girl was hiding.
"So many questions and not a single answer that makes sense!"
She looked up at the stars and a short moment passed without questions running through her mind. But then, someone called out her name and she looked down.
There, right under her balcony, stood Folken, Van's older brother. He was looking at her, beckoning at the same time. His lips were forming words without making any noise.
"I know the answers."
Hitomi didn't need to hear those words, it was as if he had spoken to her mind. A new question appeared: How did this mind-speech work? But then, she felt the urge to know about the winged people.
She wanted to know the truth. A short moment of hesistation and then she jumped down from the balcony. Why should she waste time to get downstairs when this way was so much faster?
But she didn't expect Folken to catch her. She blinked twice before she realized that she didn't hit the ground.
"Thanks." she whispered as he let go of her so she could stand alone.
He turned around, walking away and Hitomi thought for a few seconds that he was playing games with her but then he turned around, looking at her, whispering: "This way."
Though he was taller she could easily keep pace with him as they walked through the garden. It was dark, shadows dancing everywhere and if Hitomi didn't know that they were nothing but shadows, she would have been scared.
Folken guided her to the library where he finally spoke.
"So, you want to know about those winged people?" he askek though he knew that she wanted to know. But he wouldn't tell her that he had heared ever word Merle and she had been speaking.
The cat-girl was really smart, changing a story and hiding important details.
"And you can tell me?", Hitomi asked slowly.
"Of course I can. The winged people are called Draconians. They were living on Gaea a long time ago until they destroyed their own existence. They wanted to much power and many of them died."
When Folken stopped, he knew thought about how to tell her about his brother. About what he really was.
This girl was beautiful and maybe... if she knew what Van really was she'd turn away from him?
"Some of them survived and they were feared by everyone." Folken added and looked at her. She was listening to every word he spoke.
"You know... my mother was one of them."
"But.. that'd mean that you, too, are..." she started but he cut her short.
"No, I didn't inherit her blood. But..."
"But what?" she asked, looking at him, her eyes asking for an answer.
"But Van does have their blood." Folken ended his speech, not looking into her eyes. He wasn't lying. Van was a Draconian.
With that, he left the girl all alone with her thoughts.
***
Folken smiled as he walked back to his chambers. This had been so easy. Which girl would ever agree to marry a Draconian?
He laughed silently and his smile grew wider as he saw his younger brother standing in front of a window, looking up at the stars just like the girl did when he had seen her.
"What are you doing here so late, Van?" Folken asked, trying not to sound too happy.
"Huh?"
Van hadn't heared him come close, he had been lost in thoughts. He still hadn't told Hitomi about... well, him being a Draconian and he wasn't sure how to do that without scaring her off.
"If you're looking for Hitomi, she should still be in the library."
"Why's she there?" Van asked. What was Folken up to? He knew his brother disliked him but he became suspicious as he saw Folken's slight smile.
"Your friend... that cat-girl told her the story about the Draconians because Hitomi wanted to know what they are and Merle didn't tell the truth, I'd say... so I told her."
"What did you tell her?!" he whispered, his voice nothing but a hoarse whispering.
"Everything. About them... just a little bit about our mother... I didn't know you didn't tell her before."
Smiling again, he left Van just like Hitomi before. This was going to be interesting. Really.
***
Van couldn't believe his brother was doing this to him. He could hardly swallow, his mind searching for an answer.
What was he supposed to do?
Hitomi knew... Hitomi knew...
His heart ached. She'd hate him now... like everyone else who know what he was. Who know about his blood.
Without thinking about it, he walked to the library. He hardly noticed that it had started to rain. All that mattered was that fear that made his heart ache.
He slowly entered the library, finding Hitomi standing there, looking out of one window. She watched the rain falling down.
And she didn't hear him. She had been thinking about what Folken had told her – and she had decided that it didn't matter. The rain was singing for her, a song that belonged to her. At least it seemed that way.
Someone touched her shoulder and she turned around, staring at him.
"Van... What are you doing here?"
"I know that you know, so don't try to fool me." he whispered, each word hurting him more than he could tell.
"What are you talking about?" she asked.
"I understand that you hate me now – I'm used to that..."
He was almost talking to himself, repeating words and whole sentences as if it was a sad, hurting song.
"Van, I don't hate you. Why should I?" Hitomi asked softly.
"I understand that, really, everyone hates the Draconians."
It was as if he wasn't listening to her at all. He was far away, had been caught by a pain she could see on his features.
"Van! I don't hate you!" she screamed and slapped his face.
He blinked, looking at her and before he could say anything she almost shouted at him.
"I don't hate you, Van! Got it?!"
"But..."
"You still don't understand..."
She leaned closer, placing a kiss on his lips.
