It IS exciting to meet a Pirate!
Author's Note: Elizabeth ponders the excitement of meeting pirates.
Disclaimer: I don't own Pirates of the Caribbean. Just having fun.
I always thought it would be rather exciting to meet a pirate. I remember standing at the bow of the Dauntless, singing that stupid song. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
Finding Will Turner changed things. I knew Norrington wanted to hang any pirates he came across. When I found the 'pirate medallion' Will was wearing I was suddenly terrified for the pitiful specimen of a boy lying unconscious on the deck. I couldn't let him be hanged. So I hid the medallion.
I think I was smitten with Will from the first moment I laid eyes on him. I took care of him during the entire rest of the voyage to Port Royal. Although I think I began to annoy him just a little. After the first day, once he had gotten some rest and food, he was actually quite well, and didn't really need looking after. But I took my assignment very seriously. It gave me an excuse to hang about him.
Being the only two children aboard the Dauntless, we became good friends. We would sit together on the deck, watching the dolphins frolic in the wake of the ship, and talk about anything and everything. I suppose that's when my view on pirates changed. Will told me that his father had been killed by pirates. And of course, it had been pirates who had destroyed the ship Will had been on. The picture of that nightmare ship with its ragged black sails haunted my dreams for years after.
When we got to Port Royal, I was devastated that I was no longer allowed to play with Will. He was apprenticed to the local blacksmith and I went to live in the beautiful mansion on the hill. I didn't understand at first, that we were in different social spheres, and so we couldn't associate.
Well, we both grew up and remained interested in each other. Meanwhile, I was certainly aware of Norrington's attempts to court me. James was a good man, and I knew I ought to be thrilled by his attentions, but my thoughts kept returning to Will.
And then the day came when I did finally get to meet a pirate. Well, perhaps saying I met a pirate isn't precisely the right word. Got saved from drowning and subsequently threatened by a pirate, is perhaps more accurate. And while I was certainly happy to not be dead at the bottom of the ocean, I was not at all happy when my rescuer decided to use me as a human shield to aid in his escape from the law. Not that I wanted him arrested. He had just saved my life, after all! But still, the unmitigated gall of the man. What was it he said? "I saved your life, you saved mine, we're square." Hmmph.
Well, the adventure that soon followed was a bit more excitement than I had imagined when I was a child and naively thought it would be exciting to meet a pirate. Barbossa and his crew and that awful monkey..........I still have nightmares.
But I think, all in all, the whole thing turned out remarkably well. Will and I are now happily married, and my hatred of pirates has diminished. Knowing Jack, and Gibbs, and Anamaria, has balanced my views. Yes, bad pirates killed Will's father, and nearly killed Will. But there are good pirates, too, like Jack. So, it turns out I was right as a child, after all: It was rather exciting to meet a pirate.
