GerPan: Third Wheel

Germany straightened his papers while some of the other nations streamed out of the room. Other nations were lingering, chatting with each other. Germany's eyes scanned the room, searching for one person in particular. He saw him packing his suitcase, and Germany walked towards him.

"Japan," Germany called out. "Do you have a moment?"

Japan smiled softly and nodded. The two of them had been dating for a while, though they hadn't made their relationship public yet. Both of them were rather private people, so they preferred not to have other people aware of their relationship.

"I was wondering if you would be willing to have dinner with me this evening," Germany said.

"It sounds nice," Japan said. "Do you have any suggestions?"

Germany opened his mouth, but there was an interruption. An interruption that could not be ignored.

"Germany! Japan!"

That was all the warning they received before an energetic Italian wrapped his arms around the both of them. Germany immediately attempted to push Italy away, though he couldn't help but pause when he saw Japan's face go red.

"Italy!" Germany snapped. "What is the meaning of this?"

Germany succeeded in pushing Italy away, but the other European didn't seem bothered, as usual.

"Ve, are you making plans tonight?" Italy asked. "Can I come? Please… I haven't spent time with you in a long time!"

Germany opened his mouth to tell Italy that he wasn't welcome, before he looked over towards Japan. Japan looked alarmed, and Germany realised what the problem was. If he told Italy that he couldn't join them, then Italy would just badger them until they surrendered and agreed to allow him to accompany them. He groaned in defeat.

"Very well," Germany said.

"Yay!" Italy cheered. "So, where are we going? And when?"

Germany glanced towards Japan, who merely shrugged in response.

"We were hoping to get some dinner," Germany said.

"Ve, I know just the place!" Italy said, before he started to drag the other two out of the room. "You'll like it. It has the best pasta in town. Oh, but stay away from the fish. It has a funny smell."

Germany sighed. It seemed that they were really going to do this.

Italy dominated the conversations, as usual, and Germany could feel a headache coming along. He had hoped to have a night alone with Japan, but with Italy inviting himself along it was difficult. Most of the things that he wanted to speak to Japan with could not be said in front of Italy.

Japan, for his part, listened to Italy and would give short responses when needed. Germany mostly kept out of the conversation, since many of the things that Italy rambled about didn't interest Germany.

"Excuse me," Italy said, standing up. "I just need to go to the bathroom quickly."

Germany watched as Italy left, and he sagged in relief. Japan gave a small smile.

"I know that this isn't what you had in mind," Japan said, "but at least we're spending time together."

"I just wished it could be just the two of us," Germany sighed.

"Perhaps we should make other arrangements. You can come along with me, and I can take you on a tour to the most romantic places in my country."

"Oh?" Germany arched an eyebrow. "That seems bold of you, Kiku."

Japan blushed.

"Forgive me if I'm too forward," Japan said. "I just… I want to spend more time with you. I'm sorry if I cross the line."

"No, it's okay," Germany said. "I like it. You're showing me that you're ready for a little more."

To prove his point, Germany took hold of Japan's hand and gave it a light squeeze. Japan gave a small smile and squeezed back.

"…Oh, was this supposed to be a date?"

Germany and Japan both jumped and turned around. Italy looked between the two of them, his eyes wide.

"I-Italy," Germany stuttered. "Um, you see… I-I…"

"Was this supposed to be a date?" Italy repeated.

"…Yes."

"Oh, and I invited myself… I'm so sorry! I should have known! I can leave now, if you want to be alone."

"It's alright," Japan said. "We've already ordered, and we don't want the food to go to waste."

"Are you sure it's alright?"

Germany hesitated for a moment before he nodded.

"Ja," he said, "it's fine."

Italy smiled and sat down.

"So, how long has this been going on?" Italy asked. "Are you officially dating? Who made the first move? You look so cute together!"

Germany sighed. He realised that with Italy knowing about this, it was only a matter of time before the rest of the nations knew about this as well.

The prompt is: 'Could you do something with Germany x Japan where Veneziano's kind of the third wheel but not really?'
