Robin sat at his workbench. After the fight with Red X, he had realized the extent that the mask had cost him.
"I could have gotten him, except for this stupid mask!" Robin spat out the words, all of his anger channeled at the small piece of fabric in front of him. "Oh well. Maybe with a few changes, I can avoid it happening ever again."
Robin picked up the fabric. Stretching it out he carefully marked off places where it could be cut. After Red X had snapped it on his forehead, Robin realized the vulnerability it posed to him. Robin carefully picked up a sharp knife-like metal cutting strip and was about to begin his alterations when a small voice behind him interrupted him.
"Robin?" Star called out from behind him.
Inadvertently turning around to face her, Robin looked at her expectantly.
"We are going to see perhaps a double feature and wish that, Oh!" Star suddenly said, staring at him.
Confused Robin stared back until he had a sinking feeling. He reached his hand out and placed it on his face, feeling. Realizing the mask lay forgotten on his bench, Robin's eyes widened. Dropping his face and placing his hands protectively over it, He turned away from Starfire.
"Robin, your eyes"
She had seen them. There was no point in hiding them now. Raising his face once more, Robin faced her from his vantage point of being several inches shorter.
"Your eyes are like mine Robin! You are not Tamaranian, how did you get the Tamaranian type of eyes?" Star asked.
"Star I" It was now or never. Robin had to tell her now. "My eyes aren't just like yours Star. They are yours."
"Robin, Iâ do not understand. I have my eyes. How do you have them too?"
"It's a long story. I'm a normal human, the only remarkable feature about me are my eyes. When I was younger, I worked at a circus. A gypsy there thought she could do me a favor since I was always curious about my future. She cast a weird sort of spell on me that changed the color of my eyes. They became like this. She told me that my eyes would mirror those of my true love."
"But Robin, those are my eyesâ oh," Star said, picking up surprising quickly considering the magnitude of what had just been told to her.
"That why I always have them covered. If Slade, or anyone, found out how much you meant to me, both our lives would be in grave (no pun intended) danger."
Robin turned away from Star. "I know you don't feel the same. I'm just telling you for your own safety." He returned to his workbench. "I've almost figured out how to fix the mask. That way other criminals won't be able to use it against me. Against us."
"Robin, I"
"Please. I know you don't feel the same. I don't blame you. It's my curse."
"It is not a curse," Robin could barely even turn around, before he was spun the rest of the way to fully face the alien girl in front of him. "It is a gift. It has showed me that you feel as I do. It gave me hope we can be together."
Robin could barely even process her words before she kissed him. Startled he stiffened, then loosened up. Releasing the mask he had clutched in his hand, he wrapped his hands around her. "Star, I don't mean to force you to do any of this," he began, when they broke apart.
"You did not force me. It was my choice. I love you Robin."
"And you are my true love," Robin replied.
They kissed each other again. The mask was forgotten, it lay on the floor. For the first time in his life, Robin was released from its curse.
The End
(heyheyâ this is a one shot but it could be a storyâ like if Slade was watching themâ tell me if you want me to write more!)
