Bolts of lightning lit the night sky, thunder claps trailing on their heels. Rain hurled itself from the dark clouds above, pounding the ground with a ferocity she hadn't seen in years.
Moving away from her post at the window, she grabbed the remote for her entertainment system and flopped down on the couch. The stormy night suited her mood, but she needed a little something extra to calm the hurricane brewing inside. She thumbed the shuffle button for the cd player and listened as Josh Groban's voice spilled out of the speakers.
"Through the darkness, I can see your face..."
She pressed the 'skip' button.
"Let me fall..."
She sighed. She didn't want a song she had to listen to. What she needed was music she could simply feel, a song she didn't know the words to.
One skip later she found what she was looking for and wearily she closed her eyes, letting her head fall back onto the arm of the couch. The song's primal rhythms washed over her in waves as she let her thoughts run free.
It was her fault this time. She set herself up for the stinging rebuttals. She hated it when they fought.
A shiver captured her body. She pulled the crocheted afghan off the back of the couch and slid it over her body, knowing she'd be too warm in a minute. She didn't care; she needed its comforting embrace. A small tear appeared in the corner of her eye. The blanket began sliding off and she tightened her grip on it, pulling it taut across her shoulders.
A knock at the door interrupted her reverie and the song. As she pushed herself off the couch she made to stop the music, but let it be. It was nearly over. Afghan still wrapped around her, she peered through the peephole.
There he was, sopping wet from head to toe. His hair was plastered to his forehead in dark ringlets and dripped water onto his shoulders. He was panting, exhaustion written on his face. Had he run all the way to her building?
She opened the door. They stood there for a moment, neither one speaking. He opened his mouth, but before he could get any words out she leapt into his arms and kissed him fiercely. Surprised, he staggered back a few steps before wrapping his arms around her, closing what little distance was between them.
When they finally pulled away he began to speak, but she silenced him with a finger to his lips and a smile. She fell back into his welcoming arms as the song from inside her apartment came to an end. Another sigh escaped her lips, this one content as they rocked back and forth a moment before going inside her apartment. The door creaked slowly shut behind them as a distant wave of thunder rolled across the clearing sky..
"Alla luce di quel soleIo continuerò a cercare te"
The End
