All the magazines and books that Theresa pretends to hate lie. They said it would be special - magical - unforgettable. But it wasn't. Her first kiss just… happened. She and Ryan had been talking about nothing really and then they were just kissing. And it was short and wet and awkward and his breath tasted like ketchup but it wasn't really special.

And neither was their first time holding hands because he'd grabbed hers all of the sudden and held on too tight and his fingers had been sweaty and they'd let go before anyone could se so it'd been over before it could be exciting or even scary.

Her first boyfriend was kind of special but it wasn't too different to just being friends. They still walked to school and ate lunch together but sometimes they held hands and she would want to kiss him but wouldn't.

It was the things the magazines didn't talk about that were special, just a little bit. Like her first sleep over with a boy, because she knew he was scared and there had been something wrong and she'd held him when he fell asleep, pressing his face against her shoulder to hide the bruise that both were trying to ignore.

And like the first time she'd seen him cry, because he'd finally told her what she guesses she's always known and then she'd kissed him because they'd both needed it and he'd slept over a lot after that.

Sometimes, Theresa will watch the other girls in her class at school as they grin and giggle shyly with the other boys and feel sad because she doesn't have that.

But she has Ryan, so it's okay. Theresa and Ryan don't giggle or watch each other when no one's looking; they hold hands whenever they want, and he'll put his arm around her, just to make it clear that she's his.

And she knows the other girls watch them and wish they could have that because a week later the same girls who were making goo-goo eyes at one guy are hanging all over another and she's got Ryan forever and that's really special.

Author's Notes:
Obviously, this isn't a 16-year-old Theresa POV. I'm not sure how old she was meant to be, and I'm sorry if it ran in parts. I tried to make it sort of… flow, but I'm not sure it worked. Got reviews?
