Chapter One : New Beginning
Alex stared out the window as the bus rattled down the dirt road. Catching sight of something in the field, she squinted hard, trying to make out the shape. A horse! It was dark brown with a white stripe down it's face. Alex adored horses. She would have given up anything to have one, let alone, ride one. If only they could afford lessons, maybe then she could've ridden. She sighed. Not likely.
Jas stoked Shadow's neck as she turned him out into the pasture. "Such a sweet boy," she murmered, unhooking the lead rope from his halter. He swung his head playfully before cantering out into the field. Jas smiled. He called to her, and she laughed. "Sorry boy, maybe later!" Turning hesitantly, she walked away from the gate, grin spread wide across her face.
Alex stepped of the bus, coughing as it kicked up dust as it sped away. There were no lights on in the house. Not unusual, the bill had probably been payed, well, yesterday at least, so they'd have power again sometime tomorrow. She shrugged. She'd live, she always did. She opened the door wide, calling out. "Mom! Kaylee! I'm home." No reply, the dark house was silent. She set her bag down in the kitchen. Fumbling in the dark, she groped for a flashlight. Finding one, she switched it on. The whole room was empty. Alex gasped. She ran into the living room. Nothing! Not even the makeshift coffee table her step-dad had put together. Alex sank to the ground, tears welling in her eyes. How could they? Why?
Jas ran to the house, time running out. She gasped, out of breath, as the clock turned to six. LOCK. She'd made it, that was good. Chase laughed as he walked through the door. "Maybe next time, you'll take me up on my offer to finish the feed." Jas answered playfully, "I don't know. I'm getting pretty fast at making it to the house on time." He laughed again. "That you are." Diane walked into the room, smiling. "Jas, I have some good news. Your trial's been moved ahead to tomorrow." Jas nearly screamed. What great news. She'd be able to take off the stupid transmitter anklet and go wherever she wanted, whenever - assuming the trial went well. "We'll meet with Mr. Eyler first thing tomorrow morning." She smiled. "Chase, do you need a ride home?" He nodded, "Good luck, Jas."
"Now, you need not worry about a thing. Your original list of goals has been obtained, you've done wonders for the farm, and you've shown no sign of further violence." Jas nodded as Mr.Eyler stood. "I'll leave you here then, and collect you before your trial." Jas looked around the holding room, it hadn't changed one bit. It was full of dirty looking teenage boys. She glanced around the room once more. There in the corner sat a girl. She looked about Jas' age, but definitely didn't look like she should have been in the holding room. Jas stood and walked slowly towards her. "Hey." She whispered. "I'm Jas." Somehow, the girl looked relieved. "As long as I'm not alone." Was the answer. "Alone how?" Asked Jas. "I'm not the only girl," and the girl giggled. Jas smiled. "I'm Alex, by the way." "As in Alexandra?" "No, as in Alex." Jas nodded. "Ok." She smiled. She heard the door creak and turned her head. Mr.Eyler stood in the doorway. "Got to go," murmered Jas, "see you." She stood and walked slowly away. "Yeah, see you," Alex whispered.
