No one can ever know.
They hold each other tightly, afraid to let go. Afraid that if the close contact between them disappears before it must, one will vanish with a flash, a bang, and a cloud of smoke. Never to return.
Why did I fall in love with you?
Love isn't fussy. They both know that. What they can't comprehend is why it was him, why it had to be someone that seemed so fey, so mysterious. So untouchable. And, so guarded. By both his own shields and those of the people around him.
We shouldn't.
They both know it can't go on, they can not possibly ever hope to plan to see each other again. It just happens. They know that their relationship has no hope. Yet it has the sweet alluring calmness of anything that is meant to be. They both distance themselves from each other emotionally, thinking it will make it easier to say goodbye.
Let's go.
The forbidden lovers contemplate leaving, fleeing. Each in their own thoughts. They both think that the other would never leave with them, would never consider it. Would never abandon what small ties that could not be taken care of easily. Devotion to family comes first. They even have the same destination in mind. Paris. City of love.
Why the hell did it have to be you?
A fist strikes a cheek, one striking another. You can see the heartbreaking acceptance in the abused eyes. It was always like this. It all eventually came down to physical violence. He decides to leave. The other's apologies fall on deaf ears.
I'm sorry.
Words prove nothing. They are cheap, bandied about almost every second of every day. They mean nothing. People go back on their word. Break promises. Change minds. One will take one path, the other will take another. They'll probably never see each other again.
You've been acting weird lately, is something wrong?
All through this, not a soul knows. No one marks the heartbreak in the abused eyes. No one notices the self-loathing in the abuser. No one knew. They always did keep their secrets well.
