It was never there and she could never comprehend why. She never felt the surge of love that all mothers feel when their first child is born. The first time she held him in her arms she gushed and awed over him but inside she felt nothing. Looking down on her "little bundle of joy" she didn't get what all other mother's got. That overwhelming motherly sentiment. It was just never there.

She kept her mouth shut. Pretending she was overjoyed when he drew her a picture or made something for her at school. It was easy to act like a mother but she was useless at the emotional side of it. She could wipe away the tears and bandage his wounds when he came home from school with scraped knees but she didn't feel the hurt for him. He was just another thing she had to deal with.

She began to work more and more. Taking on as much as she could to try to escape from home. Sandy tried to fill his son's void by being the one who talked to him about girls and sex and puberty and whatever else Seth needed to talk about. She was only the breadwinner.

When he hit sixteen she barely knew her son anymore. She saw him once a day of she was lucky. She'd be out of the door before he woke up and arrive back home long after he'd fallen asleep. This was how it went in the Cohen household.

When her husband brought home a felon she'd used Seth as the reason she didn't want him in her home. What if he got Seth into trouble? What if he put Seth in danger? But really she was thinking, "Don't I have enough to deal with?" She couldn't take pretending to love one son while doing the same with a boy she'd never met. She reluctantly agreed to let him stay but how could she say no? His mother basically dumped him on her doorstep and branded her as his "real mom" before she could blink. How could she send him to a group home after that?

The only one she truly cared about was Sandy. He was the reason she had Seth in the first place. She'd gotten rid of his first child without telling him but he found out about Seth before she could do anything about it. "How could I be so stupid to fall pregnant twice?" But this new boy was different. He was the silent, brooding type. He kept his emotions locked in. She could relate to him. She knew they were they same person. He'd been living in hell for seventeen years and so had she. She knew it wasn't the same but there was something about Ryan. He did something to her family that she'd never had the courage to do. He gave them all a chance. He'd accepted Seth with open arms. Something she had never contemplated.

It was only after Ryan arrived that she realised what she had been missing. She began to discover more about her son and his life and learned to love and accept another. Now one was gone and she knew it was her fault. She had rejected Ryan at the start and he never forgot about it. As she cried in the pool house clinging to his sheets she knew it was all she had left of him. She thought of Seth and decided she was going to make an effort to show him her newfound love of him. She had one last chance with him. He hadn't abandoned her yet had he?
