Gun Clips and Hair Clips

An annoyed Lieutenant Hawkeye looked out from the mirror.

It was just recently that the 1st Lieutenant had decided to grow her hair out from the boyish cut it was, though she couldn't really understand where the sudden urge had come from. But now, it was at the length where it was too short to be put into a ponytail, but too long to not get in the way.

She fingered the golden strands near the side of her temples, frowning as they refused to be tucked behind her ears and out of her line of vision. Already today in morning practice she had let a bullet stray to the outer edge of the bulls-eye into the white due to her distorted sight, and that itself was unacceptable.

Riza sighed as she walked out of the washroom, finally deciding to call the haircutter later in the day, though an unexplainable sadness washed over her at the thought. She shook her head, chasing the feeling away. It was just hair.

A package sat on her desk as she returned to her seat. She looked around briefly, spotting no one around that could have left it. Havoc and the other officers were still on lunch break, and Colonel Mustang most likely would have snuck off as soon as she had gone to the bathroom.

Riza carefully sat down in her chair, fingering the simple newspaper wrapped gift. She decided she would give the Colonel a few extra minutes to slack off, since he had actually somewhat kept up with his paper work (all at gunpoint, of course).

Finally convinced that it was not some type of explosive or trap, Riza slowly ripped the tape on the back, unfolding it like one would open a flower.

Her eyes widened.

Inside was a hair clip. A simple rectangle of dark brown plastic with a metal snap on the back.

Most would consider it plain.

Riza smiled.

The golden strands that had been bothering her all morning were pulled back with a snap, and to her quiet delight, stayed in place.

The turning of the doorknob broke Riza from her thoughts and she quickly shoved the newspaper wrapping into a pocket on her uniform and wiped the pleased expression off her face into the more familiar indifferent one.

A familiar head of black hair poked in, followed by a familiar colonel's voice.

"Ah, Lieutenant Hawkeye. Back already?"

"Yes, sir."

A familiar smirk, and she knew what would happen next.

"Well, someone called about losing their cat up a tree so I'll just go an—"

"Sir," Rustle. "These need to be reviewed and signed."

His expression fell, and she was reminded of Black Hayate, whenever he was trying to beg scraps off of her. She suppressed another smile.

"But…the cat—!!"

"Can be rescued by someone else, sir. Now, please initial here and here."

Roy groaned as he sat down, drawing a pen from the holder on Hawkeye's desk. The sooner he got this over with the sooner he could leave, and save himself from a few stray bullets as well.

Riza stood as watchful as her name implied by his side, slipping document after document under his nose, and thought about her hair.

A soft "Thank you, sir," escaped her lips.

Roy paused in mid-signature; as if he wasn't sure he had heard, before finishing off. But there was a noticeable smile on his face as the two worked on in silence.

Author's Note: There are so many things I should be doing ::coughcollege appscough:: but this little bugger just had to be written, so please excuse the lack of quality. And curse FMA for being so dang addictive. XD

Also, anyone know where I can get FMA scanslations? Toriyama World seems to slowing down in their updates, and I'm craving FMA manga. HTTP download or Bittorrent links are preferable, 'cause I don't think I have enough space to get IRC. --; Thanks!
