Small Things

Yamucha sat on the edge of his seat, beside Bulma's pool, watching everybody milling around happily, sampling hamburgers, and chatting with everybody else. He was the only one who wasn't talking to someone else. He knew the real reason that Bulma was having this barbecue. She was going to introduce them all to Trunks, her little baby boy. He and Chi-chi were the only ones who had known of Bulma's pregnancy, the only ones who had been told before hand.. Except, of course, the father of the baby. Vegeta.

His fingers combed nervously through his hair. Vegeta was off to the side, wearing a scowl, almost as if he didn't want to be here. Yamucha didn't really want to be here either. He had seriously considered staying home, just not coming. He felt sick.

Leaning back, Yamucha slipped off his chair and sat with his back against the tree behind him. He leaned his head back, and closed his eyes. Without warnng, a wave of gentle but painful memories washed over him. Bulma laughing, smiling, even Bulma screaming at him. There was that time that they'd gone to the beach together, and when they'd flown through the air. Nights spent together watching movies, eating dinner, walking together.

He had loved doing little things that made her happy; leaving a note with roses on the stairs, writing her a letter, phoning her for no reason, just to hear the sound of her sweet voice. The surprises she had given him were equaly special, like the time she had showed up at one of his baseball championship games with pompoms and her hat with his name on it. She hadn't stopped cheering the whole game, which they'd won.

The one that hurt the most was remembering Bulma in his arms when they were in bed together. Her soft figure in his big arms, the sleep sigh of her breathing.

Vegeta entered Yamucha's mind. It wasn't really that Yamucha resented him, it was just.. I hope you treat her right, Vegeta, thought Yamucha.

"Hey, Yamucha!" It was Tenshinhan. "How are you?"

Yamucha stood up as his friend walked towards him. "I'm okay, Tenshin. How bout you?"

"I'm fine. Are you.. Erm, are you taking this okay? You look kind of put out."

Yamucha shook his head, his eyes flitting to Bulma before back to Tenshinhan. "Nah, I'll be okay. It'll just take a while, that's all. She's happy, that's all that counts."
