I needed a little break from my other fanfiction, Star and Lightning, and wrote this little thing.

I was listening to the musical 'Dance of the Vampires', that's why it's a bit dark and angsty

I would like to know how you like it and wether I should write more stories like this

The Refuge

She stood at the lake's beach facing the pale moon. Behind her, a pitch black forest rose high into the dark sky. Were-wolves were howling in the distance. Imiak and Fiona are gathering their pack, she thought. Owls were hooting and from time to time shrieking, eerie sounds could be heard. Every usual human would have turned and run, but this woman was no usual human. This was her world, the only place where she felt safe. When she heard cracking in the underwood directly behind her, she tensed all her muscles and listened closely.

She immediately relaxed and smiled slightly as she heard the familiar sounds of hoofs trotting behind her. The giant, black unicorn, that had emerged the forest, put its huge head with the long, riffled horn over her shoulder and nuzzled her chest. The woman leand back against the unicorn's chest and petted its nose. Then she turned around and looked right into its shining, black eyes and saw her own love and admiration mirrorred. They were each others best and only friends, the only support and refuge they had in this cruel world. All humans, the woman had known, had either died or hurt her and in the end she had withdrawn.

The unicorn neighed softly and shook its long, black mane. Then it kneeed down, making it possible for her to mount. As she was seated, it suddenly jerked up and gallopped forward. It raced along the beach, tail and mane flowing, having the woman clung to its back. She gripped the unicorn's mane tightly and enjoyed the nocturnal ride. She felt free, when the ice-cold wind blew into her face and the world around her became a blur, she felt like she could escape her life. When they were racing like this, existing as one, it was like a dance of wild hearts. For one night, the world was theirs. Two beings, hurt and rejected by everybody else, clinging to each other in order to survive.

They didn't pause until the first hints of a red, raising sun became visible in the eastern sky. The unicorn slowed down and trotted to the edge of the dark forest. The woman sat up straight, slowly coming out of her daze and becoming aware of her surroundings again. When the unicorn stopped, she slid down its back and dug her head in the panting beast's mane. Then she took one step back and watched her friend retreat into the forest. Hermione Granger squared her shoulders and with newly-found courage returned to the world that was so cold since Voldemort had taken over and most of her friends had died in the final battle.
