Author's notes: This is a poem from Kenshin's point of view, set during the duration of the manga / anime. I don't generally post poetry here since the formatting seems to dispose of stanzas. However I needed a brief break from the chapter I was writing for my main fic (in another section) and wrote this as a breather. Please read and review.

Promises

I said I would protect you,

I meant it just the same,

As the last time I made that promise.

But those promises I made,

I wasn't fit to keep.

(Too young, too naïve, not quite in touch with reality.)

I'm older now,

And wiser or so I'd like to think.

But all the same,

I worry,

That I'm still not fit to keep,

This promise that I made.

I want to protect you,

I said I would,

So often,

That I wonder if you know,

If you heard,

The frantic note in my voice

That belies the fact,

That I care too much to fail,

But that I might.

Repeat the past over.

And cause more bloody rain,

To fall.

But I said I would protect you,

And I meant it.

Whole heartedly,

With all I have,

Blade and mind,

Heart and honour,

I will protect you.

Some how,

Some way.

I'll keep my promise this time.

Come what may.

After all I promised

I will,

Protect you.
