Staring Out

Rand stared out of the window of the highest tower in the palace of Caemlyn. It was his retreat, now that Lews Therin Telamon was gone. Was it really two years since Tarmon Gai'don. He remembered fragments and recollections of that final battle but nothing more. He remembered the events after more.

He remembered the crowning of al'Lan and el'Nynaeve Mandragoran in the newly built Mew Malkier. Rand had sent every Asha'man who was strong in earth to help build it.

He had recently got a letter from his old teacher, who said that Nynaeve had given birth to their second child and their first daughter.

Rand smiled as he stared out across the world he knew. All his friends were scattered across it, living in Andor, Cairhien, Illian, Tear and every other country. The only one who wasn't was Min, who had died by the hand of Padan Fain. The Seanchan occupied the east and south of this land, the others in the west and north.

Elayne came up the stairs behind him. The mother of his children. Three she had given birth to, only two survived. One had been sacrificed at Shayol Ghul. His other wife, Aviendha had given birth to his quadruplets, all female, who Aviendha said she would train as Far Dareis Mai, and also as Wise Ones.

"Mashiara," Elayne said, "your son Tam is calling you."
