They sat side by side at the end of the grave, their shoes nudging the line that separated the cemetery's grass from the new dirt covering Joan's grave. The funeral had finished hours before but they hadn't wanted to leave. So they remained quietly at her grave though day had turned into night.

"I loved her." Grace's voice sounded hollow as she finally broke the silence. Tears rolled silently down her face, and she did nothing to hide them.

"Me too." Adam replied, not looking up from the wire heart he held in his hands. "I think she knew."

She leaned against his shoulder, a show of affection she rarely showed to anyone. They stayed like that until Grace's dad showed up and urged them to return to the Polonski home. Adam's father had already given his consent for Adam to stay that night.
