My Lover's Gone (song by Dido)

My lover's gone
His boots no longer by my door
He left at dawn
And as I slept I felt him go
Returns no more
I will not watch the ocean

Hermione leant against the windowsill, watching the ocean. Anger and a sense of betrayal welled up in her and she violently pulled her curtains shut, ignoring the tear she had rendered in the blue fabric. The sounds of the ocean and a ships horn floated into the room.

Hermione, eyes closed against threatening tears, let out a strangled cry and picked up a vase, pegging it at a wall, where it shattered loudly.

"He didn't say goodbye!" Hermione wailed, and even though she knew he'd not had the chance, she still felt betrayed.

She threw herself onto her bed and sobbed, crying herself to sleep in one of Sirius's over-large shirts, his scent wrapping around her like a warm safety blanket... or Sirius's arms.

My lover's gone
No earthly ships will ever bring him home again
Bring him home again

A single tear slid down Hermione Granger's cheek as she zipped up her black dress. She pulled on a pair of black stockings and slipped into her black leather shoes. She picked up a photo of her and her love, Sirius Black as music, their song, drifted softly into her mind. She drew her black mourning veil over her face, putting down the photo of the dancing couple as more tears followed the leader.

My lover's gone

I know that kiss will be my last

No more his song

the tune upon his lips has passed

Hermione stepped out into the hallway, walking down the hotel stairs to the foyer. Harry and Ron, also dressed in black, stepped out of their rooms on opposite sides of the hallway, and fell into place one or two steps behind Hermione. Hermione remembered this hotel so very well. This was Sirius's favourite place in the whole world. The ocean was nearby, the food well made, and most importantly, it was where he had proposed to Hermione. He had sung their song to her, and presented her with a rose. Nestled among the petals of the rose had been a white-gold ring (he knew she disliked gold itself), embedded with a simple diamond shaped like a heart. Engraved on the inside of the ring was 'Forever And A Day, Hermione And Sirius…' He had arranged for fairies to line up to form the words, 'Marry me?' Of course, she had accepted. They had planned to be married this very day.

I sing alone
While I watch the ocean
My lover's gone
No earthly ships will ever bring him home, again
Bring him home, again

The Trio walked out to the memorial statue, where Sirius's plaque stood in memory. Hermione's tears flowed down her cheeks, leaving splotch marks on her black mourning dress. She placed a single red rose on the path in front of the memorial, a statue of a shaggy dog curled up asleep on a pedestal, with the words,

'Sirius Black,

Loving fiancé,

Devoted godfather,

And a Marauder at heart.'

followed by his date of birth and date of death. Harry and Ron clasped their hands on her shoulders, giving her a hug each before leaving her.

Hermione walked to the edge of the beach and leant against a palm tree, letting her tears fall. To her ears floated their song, his voice singing it in her ear. Her tentative, husky voice joined him. As their song finished, Hermione saw an image of Sirius before her. His icy lips pressed against hers, and he backed away slowly, walking away over the water.

A small sigh departed Hermione's lips. "Goodbye, Sirius."
