He's only human

Just a man, he's only a man. A dead man. I'm going to walk up to him, smile as wide as I can and pull the trigger. John pulled his .45 from his pants pocket and looked at it lovingly. Just a matter of time Julie baby, he'll get his.

Yesterday

It was easy to get a gun; Gotham had a million of them, possibly literally. Every street corner had some punk selling 'unregistered home protection' It was more expensive than he had thought but it was worth it, John would pay any price to get back a little of what he had lost. The gun was heavier than it looked, black with a bit of silver on the barrel. There were no serial numbers.

They'd gone to the movies, no big thing really. It was a remake of an old Zorro flick, pretty good actually. Antonio Bandera's was back as Zorro; Julie had stared at him all night. She joked he should be more like him. It was romantic she said, as if a man dressed in a silly costume helping people he'd never know was any way to live. He'd laugh and said that he'd leave it to Booster Gold and the like. After the movie they went for coffee. She'd coyly asked if he'd like to go back to her place. It was drizzling lightly and Julie loved the rain so they walked home, laughing and singing and making love to each with their eyes.

Then it went bad. It's crazy how quickly it can go bad.

He walked with a smile on his face. A big shit-eating grin that said to the world 'What's funnier than this?' Not that he walked so much as strolled. Dancing to a beat only he could hear. Julie paled and started to shake. So did I. I tried to walk a little in front of her as we moved to one side of the road. We both looked in fear as he walked right by us, seemingly caught up in his own world. It struck at that moment that he was really well dressed, a tailored orange suit with matching fedora and a glass cane. It's funny the things you remember. He was a step past us when he suddenly turned around.

"Do either of you have a light?" His face was white. Only one clown wear's a white face in Gotham

We both shook our heads, nope, no lighter, sorry.

"Hmmm" His head shook slightly. "Nice night isn't it?"

Neither of us spoke, I noticed a tear roll out of Julies eye.

"Isn't it?" The grin lessened slightly as his lips pursed. His head lolled slightly to the left. The eyes never changed. They rolled in his head, seemingly random but focused utterly upon the two of us.

Julie mumbled a soft "Yes" as her hand searched for mine. Our fingers clasped and I began to pray. If he was going to kill us he'd of done it already, right? Please God, let him leave.

"It's a good one alright, tell me something would you dear?" The Joker reached out with shocking speed and tapped two fingers to his wrist, twice clipping and old Winnie the Pooh wrist watch, "My watch seems a little slow, tell my what time it is?" His eyebrows danced wildly as he said this.

I watched in slow motion as she looked down at her own wrist, Julie looked up in time to see the gun that had appeared in his hand.

One bullet was all it took. His eyes never changed.

Today.

One dead man. That's all I've got to do. No jury on earth will convict me, not that I care but it's nice to think I won't go to jail for justice. No, not justice, this is revenge. Vengeance. It's not like the movies; it's not easier to kill now. Just something that needs to be done. Johnny walked forward.
