Vignette: Heat
vi·gnette (n.): A short, usually descriptive literary sketch.
Black hair. Long, like silk – she was holding it away from her neck because the sweat made it stick to her skin. Her dress was wet – damp from the humidity and clinging to her, riding up on her slender thighs. She stood on the steps of the shrine, broom in one hand, hair in the other, trying to cool off.
He spoke and her eyes flew open – she dropped her hair as if she were doing something wrong and blushed red under the heat-flush of her skin.
His voice was deeper than usual, and she knew it, though she couldn't – quite – place whether it was amusement or something else. His eyes glinted at her, and she smiled to see that his blonde curls were frizzing everywhere.
"Not so perfect," he heard her murmur as she turned to go back to the shrine.
She didn't stop him from following.
