Chapter 11

In Which Memories and Alcohol Don't Mix

"Come on, Bess," Jack whined, "Don't you want to be with me?"

Bess paused for a moment.

"Er...well...yes, yes, I do want to be with you," she said, "but, Jack, forever?"

"Forever," he said resolutely.

"Forever is such a long time though, Jack."

"Yes, but we'll be together. Isn't that all that matters, Bess?"

"No, no it isn't all that matters."

"But I love you."

"I love you, too, Jack," Bess said, "But, well, I don't want to be sixteen forever. I want to grow up and get married and have children. I want to grow old with someone, Jack. You can't offer me that."

"But..." He was at a loss for words.

"I'm sorry, Jack. I really am. But I can't do it. I can't give up everything for you, Jack."

She left him standing there in the filed behind the house—the wind whipping his face softly, drying his tears before they left his eyes.

Jack lay awake on the living room couch. He hadn't cried in so long, but as the memories pushed their way to the front of his mind, he found himself unable to control his emotions. In a drunken rage, he jumped up, kicked over the coffee table, and knocked the bookshelf to the floor, causing a loud bang that only made him madder. He then threw himself back onto the couch, burying his face in the dusty pillows.

That's how Cappi found him the next morning.
