THE POWER OF A WISH
Chapter 6: Drifting apart
*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*
"Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmiiiiiiiiiiiiiii" Yugi whined. Yami rolled his eyes *I'm glad Sugoroku explained this whole sugar-high thing to me. But how should I know that he isn't allowed to eat too much syrup? He acts like half his age ... but still ... he is cute that way ...* Yami decided, a grin growing on his face.
Yugi jumped around Yami, wanting him to go on. "Yami come on I wanna go!" Yugi continued. "I'm coming hikari, but you still haven't told me where you want to go" Yami questioned Yugi. The small boy blinked. He really hasn't thought about it. Then a thought hit him "I wanna go to the park!" he exclaimed. Yami smiled and nodded. Everything was fine with him as long as his hikari was happy.
"Race you" Yugi shouted before he took of like a rocket. It took the darkness a few seconds, but then he followed the small, but really fast teenager. The spirit only caught up with him at the park. The yami slowed down to a stop, resting the hands on his knees and took a deep breath. Yami was in a good shape, but running through the whole city after millennia's in a puzzle have its effect.
Yami sat down under a tree to rest and relax. The race has worn out Yugi too and he plumped down beside his friend. For a few moments, they were enjoying the silence and each other's company.
"Hikari?" Yami questioned.
"Mh?"
"What's school?" Yami leaned his head to side, looking extremely curious and cute I might add.
"It's a place where children get 'educated'" Yugi emphasized the last word, sarcasm in his voice.
"And?"
"You learn to read, write and do math. Ok, it IS important to know all that, but you also have to do things, you'll never need in your life" Yugi continued.
"... For example?" Yami thought he understood the meaning of this. It didn't sound too bad.
"You do a lot of history and math doesn't simply mean add and subtract. Last week we graved a lot of lines and curves and they don't make much sense ... Forget it. I'm sure you get the hand out soon. You're smart after all" Yugi finished, having the desire to hide. 'Have I really told him he was smart?'
Yami grinned at his blushing hikari. If his hikari thought he'd make it, he would make it!
"Hey Yami, Yugi!" a shout interrupted their conversation. Joey came towards them, Tristan not far behind. Yugi smiled, but deep down he was slightly disappointed, that he won't have more time alone with his yami. He really wanted to know the other better ...
"Yami, how are you?" Tristan asked worriedly. "I'm fine guys. Thank you for carrying me home yesterday"
Joey scratched his hair, embarrassed "Don't mention it. You saved our ass, after all and we were glad to help." Tristan nodded in agreement.
"But seriously Yami, do you know who this guy was? He seemed rather pissed at you for whatever reason" Joey whispered, fearing that that somebody will hear them.
"I have no idea, Joey. Hey, do you know that I'll go to school with you guys?" Yami changed the subject, feeling uncomfortable with topics which include his past.
"That's great!" Tristan exclaimed.
"Wow really?" Joey added.
"Grandpa registered him today, though I don't know how ... Yami doesn't exist after all" Yugi spoke up.
"Well, I don't know, but it doesn't matter. Think of aaaaallll the fun we will have." Joey was exited.
"How about we spent the day together? I'm sure Yami doesn't know the city yet" Tristan suggested.
"Yeah, we give him a city tour!" Joey agreed.
Yugi nodded brokenly. It was fun to spent time with his friends, but for now he just wanted it to be just Yami and him. He sighed. Yugi didn't really have choice.
*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*
"Tristan and Joey are really great guys. Don't you think so Yugi? Yugi!" Yami was blocking his hikari's way.
"Yeah sure" Yugi answered, trying to smile. He has to agree that they had a lot of fun. They checked out the mall, played a few games and enjoyed themselves. But Yugi hasn't had one minute alone with his protector.
Yami watched the younger boy, not understanding the sudden mood change. Was this the boy who was hyper in the morning? Certainly not! He was about to question his other self further, but he was already on his way upstairs. Deciding to let it be the yami followed him to their room.
*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*+~*
Yami awoke with a start as he heard Yugi screaming. Somebody was hurting his hikari! He jumped out of the bed, scanning the room and ready to defend his little light. But there was nobody and Yugi was still asleep. *He must have a bad dream. Better wake him up*
Yugi was drenched in sweat, tossing around wildly. Yami shacked him slightly, not wanting to fright the teen even more, but he didn't wake up. Instead he started to scream "Yami ... Yami ... no ... Yami". Fear gripped the darkness' heart as he saw tears streaming down the porcelain face.
"Yugi wake up!" he shouted anxious.
Suddenly Yugi was up, his heart racing and his breath uneven. The light put his hand to his heart, trying to calm down. He nearly jumped out of his skin when he was brought in an embrace. "Shh Yugi. It's all right, you had a bad dream. Everything is alright" the deep voice whispered.
Yugi recognized the voice as Yami's and was now more frightened than before. He pushed out of the embrace and took a few steps away, hugging himself.
He remembered the dream clearly, seeing Yami leaving him for someone else. The teen still felt the hurt, the betray, the desperation ...
His stomach clenched painfully. No it wasn't true, Yami swore to protect him. Still, he couldn't deny the feeling in the pit of his stomach. 'But why I am reacting this way? I'm used to it. Why is it more painful this time? Is it, because I trusted Yami more than anybody else?'
He was startled, when the figure in front of him took a step towards him. "NO!" Yugi shouted desperately.
Yami was shocked. He wanted to comfort his hikari. Why was he so afraid of him? Didn't he recognize me? The spirit needed an answer to this question
"Yugi, it's me, Yami" he tried, voice low, calming but clearly showing his hurt.
Yami could feel the exact moment, when his heart broke "NO! Stay away from me! Go away ... go away ... just leave me alone ... go away" the hikari cried frantically.
Yugi was afraid, his dream NO his vision will come true. It was a vision, wasn't it?
"But hikari ..."
"No, I don't want to hear it ... please just go"
Yami nodded brokenly. He respected his hikari's wish and left. The spirit remembered the guest room and went towards it.
Yugi, in his room, fell on the bed, sobbing. 'I just need time to sort this out. Yami will understand' he reassured himself, but he wasn't so sure about it. Minuets later he drifted off to a restless sleep.
-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"THE NEXT MORNING-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"- "-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"-"
In the morning Yugi was greeted by his grandfather and a very quiet Yami.
"Morning" he tried.
"Good morning, Yugi" Sugoroku replied.
The darkness nodded in acceptance, taking a nip from his coffee, but didn't offer a word.
Breakfast was more silent than usual. Nobody talked and they all concentrated hard on finishing their breakfast. Sugoroku was confused by their strange behaviour, but didn't question it, as he was sure he would make it rather worse than better.
Yugi was the first, leaving. Yami stood up and followed him, feeling bad for ignoring his hikari.
"Yugi wait! I'm sorry" Yami apologized.
"No, I have to apologize. I was very mean to you yesterday" Yugi interrupted.
"Let us forget it. What was your dream about?" the darkness questioned.
"Nothing" the light replied, hoping his yami let the subject drop as he was very uncomfortable with this topic.
"You wouldn't have been that upset, if it had been nothing. You can tell me" Yami replied calmly.
His yami didn't take the hint, did he?
"I said it was nothing. Stop question me about it!" he shouted angrily as he stormed out of the room, leaving a perplexed spirit behind.
'Why am I that mean to him? He was worried about me and I shout at him. I really have a nasty temper' Yugi thought, furious at himself.
Deciding to apologize he headed back to the living room, to find it empty.
"Grandpa, where is Yami?" he questioned his jiichan, who was still in the kitchen.
"He went out, but he didn't tell me where" his jiichan answered his grandson's question.
Yugi was sad, then angry. 'How could he just leave like that?' again he stormed towards his room, slamming the door shut.
Hours passed and still Yami wasn't back. It was already dark outside and no sign of the missing spirit. Yugi's anger turned into worry. 'Has this man attacked again? What if he was hurt or worse ...' he thought troubled.
The light pricked up his ears when he heard the front door open then shut. He was about to greet his protector, but decided against it. His yami would come in if he wanted to talk.
He was getting more and more nervous with each step he heard, coming towards his room. But Yami never came in. He stopped shortly in front of Yugi's room then went towards the guest room.
That Yugi was disappointed would have been an understatement. He sighed, but came to the conclusion that it was fair, how his other behaved. He was a jerk towards the darkness and he returned the 'favour'. The hikari feel asleep, feeling better as his knew Yami was save at home. There was always time to apologize in the morning ... They both just need time to sort things out ...
