Chapter 18: Deadly desert

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Yugi yelled out of top of his lungs, awakening with a start and sitting upright in the seat. Alarmed by the scream, his friends jumped out of their seats, ready to face any attacker, who might threaten the hikari. Sleep was still tugging on their awareness, making them feel dizzy and confused by their sudden movements. Joey and Mai were the first to run to their friend's side, seeing the poor teen covered in sweat and shaking in fear. They soon saw that their little friend wasn't in any sort of danger, but most probably had a nightmare.
Trembling, Yugi put his hands around himself to get rid of the coldness not only gripping his body, but his mind as well. The hikari's feelings and mind were messed up, not sure what was a dream and what reality. He'd dreamed that Yami had died. Easing words from the group of friends couldn't help to convince Yugi that it was not a vision, but only a dream. Only Ishizu's assurance that the duplicate of the puzzle would shatter when the pharaoh died convinced the light that his shadow was still alive and ready to be found.
"We're here." exclaimed Seto, when he saw the first pyramids reaching out of the golden sand of the desert. Forgetting for the moment Yugi's dream, everybody was looking out the window, marvelling at the beauty of Egypt, except Malik and Ishizu, who spent all their life in this country. They knew it all too well to ever underestimate this golden land. The desert was beautiful on the outside, smooth and attractive but deadly on the inside; hidden in the sand dunes, only showing itself when attention of its prey lessened.
"I suggest that we take camels to continue our journey. Cars will break down in the sand and camels are used to the heat in the desert, plus they don't need much water. Now to settle purchase of things we'll need..." After they had landed and left the plane, Malik spoke up, taking the lead.
"I provide water and" with a finger he pointed at his sister "... you, Ishizu look for the camels" The referred one nodded in agreement. "The rest of you will buy cloaks to cover our skins and clear up what we brought with us. Leave everything we don't need in the jet, we only travel with light luggage or we won't reach our destination" Nobody argued, not even Seto, who had difficulties taking orders. They knew better than to contradict Malik, who, a long with Ishizu, had spent their childhood in the Sahara.
As soon as the jet landed, they understood what Malik was talking about. Already the slightest wind whirled the sand and blew it in their faces. Not to mention that the sun was relentlessly shining down on them, making them sweat and wish for water and cover. As far as they could see, there was not a single cloud in the sky. It's really unimaginable that in the night the temperature dropped to zero degrees Celsius.
Once the organization was settled and the group changed their clothes to lighter clothing, they made their way in the desert, guided by the light of the puzzle. It blinked quicker and more often when they neared the pharaoh and became slighter and sporadic when they moved further from his location.
The sun was setting down and the group was getting tired. Riding the whole day on a camel was more difficult and strenuous than one could imagine. Not to mention that since an accident -cough-Joey-cough- their water supplies were nearly gone, leaving them with only one canteen of water left. There were only two options left: looking for an oasis or walking back the next day to stock up with more water.
The group was looking for a place where they could spend the night after a long argument with the bearer of the millennium puzzle, who refused to rest until his darkness was found. Tiredness and the coldness of the night tucked on their energy, leaving them lacking in concentration and sleepy.
That was until the millennium puzzle started to blink uncontrollably. It floated out of Yugi's grip, despite the lighter half's cry of horror and went away slightly from the group until it stopped high in the air, emitting a blinding light, forcing Yugi and his friends to shield their eyes.
Once the light intensity vanished and only the stars were lighting up the dark sky again, the group dared to look. The pyramid was still hovering over the ground, but it changed its position. Normally the millennium item had the form of an upside-down pyramid, but now the point was up. The Eye of Horus shined.
Before any of them could comment on the incident the earth began to quiver, a large rectangular hole opening in the sand only a few metres in front of them. If they had been standing there, they would have suffered a living death, covered under tonnes of sand, suffocating slowly. In the next moments the horror turned into astonishment as something came out of the pit. It took them only seconds to identify the block of stone as a pyramid. With their mouths hanging wide open in shock, they watched the spectacle, seeing how the pyramid was now standing on the ground as if it had been there forever. The holes around it were filled up with sand and the silence of the night returned.
"W-What was that?" Joey, the first who gained his compose back asked amazed.
"No wonder, nobody ever found the pharaoh's tomb" Ishizu murmured quietly, not really meaning the others to hear.
"You mean Yami is in that THING?" Seto questioned unbelievingly the still dazed Ishizu.
"Why else should it react to the millennium puzzle? Do you have an other proposal?"
"No. But that's impossible! A pyramid can't appear like THAT,"Seto admitted humbly.
"Magic, what else can do that?" Malik commented dryly, giving the CEO a look for in his eyes a stupid question. Seto kept quiet and just glared back. He couldn't argue about that as he had no idea how else it could have worked. But he wasn't one to give in that easily. Malik smirked at his victory, enjoying that he shut the impertinent boss of Kaiba Corp.
"OOOOOK. And how do we get in?" Honda objected, trying to keep the two from each other's throat. After all he didn't know if this Malik knew any magic like his darker half.
"How about the entrance here." Joey pointed to stairs, leading to a way in the pyramid. The other sweat dropped at this.
"And we better hurry. Do you feel the wind?" Ishizu hurried to the stairs.
"Yes, now that you mention it ... strange ... there wasn't the slightest breeze all day" Joey wondered.
"That's because a sandstorm is coming up" and with that the group of friends run to the stairs, escaping the sandstorm.
Goose bumps were rising on their skins as they entered the dark tomb. A freezing gust howling through the old masonries, leaving them trembling with aforboding feeling. Hieroglyphs along the walls accompanied them on their travel through the ruins, telling the history of an ancient pharaoh, named Yu-Gi-Oh! Blood and destruction was by his side all his life, making his friends wonder if the darkespirit of the millennium puzzle ever had a happy childhood, or a childhood at least. Malik and Ishizu were watchful, knowing of the many traps in a pharaoh's tomb to deter tomb robbers. Aside from this terrifying fact, the siblings feared that they would get lost in these never-ending hallways.
Except a flashlight, brought along by Seto, there was no other light-source in the pyramid. Torches were only used in the main chamber, where the pharaoh's body along with his treasures were kept. Taking only small steps, in order to prevent to fall in a trap, the group went farther in the old ruins, running their hands along the walls to find their way in the darkness. Conversations were short and whispered for fear that someone or something might hear them. No one of them believed in ghosts, but who knew what wandered around in these halls.
Suddenly Ishizu screamed in panic.

That sure took me long to write. Damn writers block! I made the chapter longer to make it up to you, but it didn't go very well. Besides it wasn't a good chapter. I want to end this fic soon and that's why I hurry so much, but oh well please review anyway and help to kill my unimaginativeness. I really try hard to get over it. I know that AGAIN nothing happened here, but it will in the next chapter! I pinkie-promise
'Darkness consumes the light' should be updated next!
Thanks to Silentia, padfootgrl, Strega, Pharaohs Angel, Cherazz22784, Koishii No Tenshi, Flowers, Atemuzgirl, Misura and Rikainiel for leaving a review! I really appreciate it and the comments helped me to carry on!
Most of the reviewers wish for a happy end. Let's see what I can do about it!
