Adrian drove fast without even thinking. He didn't realize several things. For one thing, he was 10 miles above the speed limit, he also didn't even notice the people were running away from his car as they tried to cross the street, he didn't notice the five red lights he ran through, and he didn't notice the tears pouring down the sides of his face. All he knew was that something was very, very wrong with Trudy.

When he pulled into the parking lot of the hospital, he took a second to wipe his cheeks and quickly ran out of the car and towards the hospital.

When he got inside, the smell of antiseptic filled his nose. He ran up to the front desk and panted to the receptionist: "Trudy...Trudy Monk....where is she?"

"Room 222, intensive care. Down the hallway and to the left." The woman replied pointing.

Monk ran down the hallway and to room 222. He stood outside of it for just a second bracing himself. Then entered. As we walked towards the bed, a burly nurse stopped him. "Relation?" She asked.

"Husband." Monk replied. The nurse let him pass. "Just a few minutes. Vistiting hours are almost over."

Monk scarcely heard her. He ran over to her bed and looked at Trudy. His wife, laying there. Blood in her hair...eyes closed. Stitches all up and down her face. Bandaged hands and arms.

"Oh Trudy..." Monk breathed. "Trudy...no..." He closed his eyes breifly and heard a weak voice replying:

"Adrian..."

He quickly opened his eyes and stared into her blue eyes. He gently touched her blood flecked hair and she put her hand weakly over his. "Adrian...don't be scared. It's only a while..."

"Trudy..trudy..please..don't...don't go...I need you...please..." He was crying again. He lifted up her hand and kissed it gently, and held it to his cheek.

"All...all...you need to remember...Adrian...my love. Bread and butter Adrian...bread and butter..." She closed her eyes and took a deep breath and let it out. She did not breathe again. His wife had died.

"No...No Trudy...please....please...don't..." He went to his knees still holding her hand, and started sobbing. "No...No...No..." The burly nurse came over to the bed and took her pulse. She also took her stethoscope and held it to her chest. Nothing on both tests. "I'm sorry..." she said slowly to the still sobbing Adrian on the floor. She helped him up, and tried to lead him out of the room. He broke away from her and went back to Trudy and took her hand a final time. It was cool to the touch. He lifted both of her hands and folded them onto her chest. He kissed her pale cheek and said in a barely audible whisper. "Bread and butter Trudy."

While all this was taking place, Captian Stottlemyer was driving quickly to the hospital. When he got there, he noticed that the parking space next to Adrians car was available and so he parked next to him. He also noticed that Adrians car was parked crookedly in the space. Instead of smiling, he only became more worried. He ran inside and went to the front desk. He asked the receptionist "Where's Trudy's room?"

"Down the hall and to the left." She said pointing. He turned and ran down the hallway, and saw Adrian was sitting in the chair outside her room. His head in his hands and staring off into space.

"Adrian..What happend?"

"Captian." he said slowly turning his head to look at him...he slowly got up and said.."She's dead. My...my Trudy...is dead." He said...he knew no more. He didn't know that Stottlemeyer had reached out for him, for Adrian had fainted.
