"I came to visit you, you know..."
She stirred her head weakly against his thigh and tried to say something, but all that emerged was a choked gurgle. Reno's fingers slipped clumsily over her blood-stiffened hair in the darkness.
"Shush. You have to stay alive long enough to hear this."
It was getting harder to speak with ten floors of building pressing down on them, harder not to think about the liquid pooling warmly beneath them. The mission had gone horribly wrong.
"Last Christmas...was gonna tell you then, but I...wussed out. Never even knocked..." He chuckled wetly and his vision tunneled, but he gritted his teeth and held on. He had a lot of regrets, but this would not be one of them.
"Think I...sorta...love you, 'Laney...just a...lil' bit...ya know..."
Elena's hand crept up to curl blood-slicked fingers around his own, drawing them down to press a trembling kiss to the back of his hand. There were no more words, and after a time her breath across the back of his hand slowed. He held on until it stopped.
One corner of his mouth quirked up in a semblance of his trademark grin.
"See ya on the other side...'Laney..."
He let go.
