Author's Note: I'm aware it's not particularly evident which characters this refers to. I'll let you just pin your own favorite pairing to it for now. I may decide to ... extend this or something, but given I don't have much time... I'm thinking not. I actually wrote this last year, found it, and typed it up in like two seconds. So it probably has some errors. I'm sorry.
Simply Her
He was attracted to her.
He had come to this conclusion only recently, and yet he was still absolutely clueless as to how he knew it – or why he liked her. All he was aware of was that something special made her stand out from the crowd; well, at least to him.
It wasn't beauty – she was pretty, but not gorgeous; her looks did not transcend any others. He had liked a girl for beauty before; she had been graceful, cool, nonchalant. But this new girl was... well, sometimes clumsy. She was fiery, on the edge. Vibrant, yes, but that had more to do with her personality than looks. He had liked the beautiful girl for her looks, but that was entirely different from the way he felt now, about the 'new' girl.
So he knew that his feelings could not have been because of her looks. Not that she was ugly – just, well, plain looking.
If he didn't like her for looks, than what could it be? Looks are always the first part of a person one notices – looks are what inspires attraction. He could not pinpoint the cause of his feelings, though, so he tried to forget about reason and focus on that pleasant feeling he had when he was with her.
And then he thought it might be her personality, because she really was an amazing person to be around, and if it wasn't personality, what else could it be?
Then it struck him that she could be quite as stubborn and unlikable as the next person. And besides – he liked a lot of people's personalities, but he didn't feel anything for them.
At this point, he was more puzzled than he'd ever been. So he decided to scrap all thoughts of her this way and just get over her. His attention drifted to what seemed like a much easier problem to solve – Voldemort, as ironic as that may be.
And honestly, in the case of women, an evil over lord deemed on taking over the world was a much, much easier problem to deal with than the two things which have puzzled men since the beginning of time: women and love.
Unfortunately, his nemesis was not enough to distract him, and so he was forced once again to find the reason for his feelings. Obviously if they would not go away, they were important.
For a long time, he was unsuccessful in his mission, but finally he realized that there could not be any single reason. If he just loved her for her personality it would leave out her intelligence, or her looks, and though neither were perfect or even great, they were no more or less of what he could ever have wanted. It wasn't any one thing about her – it was simply her and the way she was.
