Metronomes Are Like Heartbeats
"That's annoying."
Kurama chuckled. "Well it's helpful."
The fire youkai sitting in his window sill rolled his eyes and answered, "I didn't ask that baka, I meant turn it off."
"Oh," replied the youko with a slight laugh in his voice. "You should've just said so, Hiei."
"Hn."
TOK TOK TOK TOK TO-
"How the hell is that damn thing helpful?"
Kurama turned to face his irritated little friend. "You see Hiei," he began slowly, "you play along with it on the piano and it helps you keep the tempo of the song. When you follow the tune that the actual composer made, it sounds much better.
"Hn."
Hiei pondered this for awhile, then frowned and said, "Kurama, you don't have a piano."
Kurama gave him a sly grin and replied, "Exactly."
"Hn?"
"I don't have a piano, so I bought it to help me relax. It's quite conforting to listen to. The sond reminds me of water dripping from a leaf right after a refreashing rainfall and landing in a crystal clear puddle."
Hiei blinked and nodded, though he couldn't really see how the loud, annoying, noise emitting from the metronome was relaxing. "Kurama must have noticed becaused hae decided to ask the youkai about what it made him think of.
"What about you, Hiei? What does the sound make you think of?"
Kurama seriously thought that Hiei was either going to make a sarcastic remark, or simply avoid the question by flitting out the window, but what the fire elemantal said completely shocked him.
"Heartbeat."
"Kurama stared. "Really?"
"Hn."
"Hiei.....A heartbeat......What made you say that?" Hiei looked down at the floor and answered, "The one thing I remember my mother telling me..... before..... I was taken away from her was, 'If you listen hard enough, in everything that has a rhythm, you will hear my heartbeat, beating so that you know.....even though you cannot see me,.... I'm always with you.....and no matter what, you are never alone.'"
Hiei looked up from the carpet and flashed a sad smile at Kurama.
At that, Kurama smiled too. "I see. The sound reminds you of your mother. Looks like the metronome relaxes you too."
Hiei blinked a couple times then stood up, opening the window, getting ready to flit out.
Kurama raised an eyebrow curiously. "Where are you going, Hiei?"
Hiei briefly to the youko with a smirk on his face.
"Hn. Getting a metronome."
