Part 2

She could see the light shining through the flowery curtains, and as she pushed the duvet back a little she contemplated the need to get out of bed. Did she really need to? She pulled the duvet up a little bit, clutching at it as she turned her head back into the pillow. She didn't need to get up today. Saturday. Though an eyelid peeked open and she looked up at the clock numbers. 8:45.

She promised her fellows Slayer she'd meet with her and they'd train. But as she listened to her body and sunk into the gorgeously comforting bed, all she could think of was more rest.

Too late. Already someone was banging on the front door, and she frowned, her eyes remaining closed, and groaned, knowing that sleep was one of those things she'd simply have to wait for until tonight.

She jogged down the stairs as she pulled her hair back into a ponytail before clutching at the front door handle and pulling it towards her. Just as she thought.

'Faith, hi,' she smiled a little and stepped aside as the brunette came in. She closed the door and followed the brunette with her eyes. As Faith perched on the second step, Buffy scratched an irritated spot on her forearm. 'So…'

Faith's eyebrows raised. 'So? Forgetting something?'

Buffy watched her with all due blankness. 'Urh…' She shook her head a little.

Faith sighed and watched her a moment. 'You forgot?'

Buffy waited a moment, trying to think what she could've forgotten. Then it clicked. 'Oh, yeah, course, training. Gimme a second, I'll put something different on. Why doncha…head downstairs to the basement, I'll meet you there in a second,' she said and rushed past her upstairs.

Faith sat, still on the step and watched the space ahead of her. 'It's my birthday,' she mumbled beneath her breath, before grabbing the banister to get her up, then headed down to the basement.

I climbed the few steps that led to my motel room, my boots disturbing the pools of water that had collected beneath my feet. My clothes and hair had drenched from the rain beating down on them. God, this was so stupid. I felt like crap. Just another year, just some more crap.

I closed the door quietly behind me and flipped on the light switch. The place was still a mess. I was gonna clean it, but I couldn't be bothered. What's the point, anyway? I was already halfway across the room when I'd removed my jacket and thrown it in the opposite direction to what I was going. Glancing over at my dresser I realised just how unpopular I really was. 'Wow. Not one birthday card. Great.'

I peeled the remainder of my clothes from my tired body one by one, moving towards the shower as I did. I'd only gotten down to unzipping my jeans before hearing at knock at my door. I felt my forehead scrunching, trying to think who that could be. Vamp, probably. I checked for any sharp implements in the vicinity and came to grab a stake sitting on my dresser before I proceeded to the door.

I pulled it back, clutching at the pointy object as I did. But there was no need. I gazed at the look in her eyes as she looked at me. Then all at once I was melting away as she pulled me in towards her, and embraced me. I didn't quite understand what was going on but I was definitely receptive to it.

'Happy Birthday, Faith,' I heard her whisper into my ear as she held me. I smiled a little.

'You remembered,' I told her, my voice raspy as it always was. I felt her chuckle against me.

'I forgot, actually.' There was a little silence as I thought about what she had just said. I had actually only mentioned it to her a couple of weeks ago, but I guess it was nothing special. Except for when she came over to wish me a happy birthday. Now it was, because she was here.

'It's ok,' I muttered as I leant my chin upon her shoulder.

'I'm a dumbass. I got you a present and everything, but then I forgot that it was today,' she continued, then pulled away and reached for it in her back pocket. 'It's nothing big, just…something…' she said as she looked at the present in her hand. She stepped into the room and then handed it to me.

I glanced at her and smiled. 'Thanks.' Bless her. I was upset that she'd forgotten but her remembering meant even more to me. And I could feel her hazel eyes burning into me as I tore open the silver wrapping paper that hid this blue rectangular box from me.

I opened the box slowly, carefully. A tiny little silver bracelet with a plate in the centre that had an inscription.

Buffy's Sister Slayer

I looked up at her to see her looking at me. 'This is beautiful, it must have cost a fortune,' I spoke as she started to approach me. She shook her head disagreeing with my comment, and took the bracelet from the box.

'Here.' She took the box also and set it down on the table behind us. Then, reaching for my wrist, she took it into her free hand, and began putting on the attractive piece of jewellery. I watched her every move. How her fingers worked at the clasp, how her fingers moved so indolently against my skin, how her eyes squinted at the focal point. I noticed she had one too, and when she moved her hands away, I caught it, with my own. I played with the bracelet a little, looking at it first, then into her eyes.

She smiled immediately, a sheepish expression about her. Only when my eyes had focussed on the silver plate she had, hers read, "Faith's Sister Slayer."

I moved in close to her, embracing her myself this time. And as I wrapped my arms around her tiny body, I smiled. 'Thank you, it's so beautiful.'

I felt her arms wrap around my body followed by, 'They're all gonna be jealous, now.' I chuckled a little, and heard her beginning to laugh also. As I looked down, I realised the plate was double sided. I couldn't read it properly because of the light reflecting off it. And on the back it read:

I love you, Faith.
