It
amazes me that the musical's libretto, except for some minor
details, is essentially my life story.
Here I am, pursued
relentlessly by that over-eager policeman, Javert, for some trivial
offense. I can tell that the audience is on my side, not falling for
the lies that Javert spouts, in the guise of Graham, through his
lackey, Lounds. I feel the audience support as I, Jean Valjean,
undergo a great Becoming.
Fantine sits beside me.
"Enjoying
the show, Reba?" I ask.
She smiles warmly. "It sounds
lovely, Francis. Thank you for taking me."
It troubles me
that Fantine must die.
