Title: Why?

Author: children of the Revolution

Fandom: Lord of the Rings

Disclaimer: I don't own them. I never did and I never will.

Warnings: Slash (or Shounen-ai, if you're a mange/anime freak, like me. ;P) Boys liking boys, if you still don't get it.

Rating: Pg-13...)

Chapter: One-shot

Authors notes: Mostly based of the movies, simply because I was twelve years old when I read the books (four years ago, in other words).

You wouldn't believe me if I told you how utterly disappointed I was when I finished 'The return of the king', and Frodo and Sam still hadn't kissed properly. :P How I hated that ending...

And Merry/Pippin just happens to be one of my favorite pairings. ;)

The color of the sky was somewhere between pink and orange. The sun was halfway down and the lake mirrored the sky perfectly. Under a tree on a hill, a bit outside of the little village, two hobbits sat and watched the sunset as they smoke their pipe weed.

"Have you noticed it to?"

"Hm?" He turned his gaze away from the beautiful sunset. "Noticed what?"

"Sam. Lately he's been a bit...well, depressed, I guess."

"You just noticed that, Pip?"

"Well...yes?"

Merry looked back to the setting sun. "One would have thought you had seen it too..."

"Seen what?"

"Just forget about it."

"Why? Merry! Please tell me!"

"He's been like that for a year now. And you know what happened a year ago?"

"A year ago...Are you talking about when Frodo left?"

Merry nodded and looked deeply into Pippin's eyes, waiting for a reaction. The younger hobbit looked a bit confused.

"And...that's it?"

"He's missing Frodo of course!"

"But I miss him too." Pippin had confusion written all over his face.

"We all do, but you see, Pip...I think, I'm not completely sure, but I think that Sam loves Frodo."

"I still don't get it. I love him too, but I-"

"Stop being so naïve Pippin!" He lowered his voice to a whisper. "For crying out loud, I think Sam is in love with Frodo."

"Oh!" The look of confusion was replaced by a look of surprise. "Now I think I get it."

"You think?"

"But I thought Sam was in love with Rosie?"

"Well, he was, but that was before the fellowship. I think they fell in love with each other during-"

"You think Frodo loves Sam too?"

Merry smiled a bit and shook his head. "No."

"But you said-"

"I think Sam loves Frodo, I know Frodo loves Sam."

"Why did he leave then?"

"Sometimes you are just too naïve, Pip." He brought his pipe to his mouth. "I thought you grew up a bit during the journey, but maybe I was wrong. You don't happen to remember a certain Ring?"

Pippin pouted and brought his own pipe to his mouth. Then a few moments of silence followed before the younger of the two began talking again.

"Is that even possible? Two lads falling in love with each other I mean?"

"Well", he blushed a bit, but Pippin seemed oblivious, "it's not usual, but neither is it completely unheard of."

"It isn't? I've never heard of it."

Truth to be told, neither had Merry, but since he himself had fallen in love with a boy he guessed it had to be possible. "I've heard of it." It could be his imagination, but he thought the younger hobbit looked relieved at that answer.

"If you say so." A small smile formed on Pippin's lips and a slight blush began to cover his cheeks. "I'm glad to hear that."

"Hm?" Merry lowered his pipe and looked in confusion at Pippin. "Why?"

Pippin laughed softly. "Now, dear Merry, you are the naïve one." Then he put down his pipe, reached forward, and kissed him.

It took one or two seconds, then Merry kissed him back. And they stayed on that hill a long time after the moon came up.
