Nothing Gold Can Stay
A Hatori x Kana fanfic by Rabid Lola
Disclaimer: Fruits Basket is not mine. The poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" is by Robert Frost. It's my favorite.
I'm not sure what you call this, since it's not a song-fic… Anyway, enjoy.
Nature's first green is gold…
Gold, like the subtle shimmer of her hair as it slips through his fingers or flies in the summer wind. People will tell you it's brown, her hair, but to him it holds her vivacity and her brightness, her laughter and her love.
Her hardest hue to hold.
Gold…
Like her.
Her early leaf's a flower,
"…it becomes spring."
Their season, spring is. Bright and tender and just out of winter, joy and happiness, fresh and clean.
Wonderful…
But only so…
and fleeting.
…an hour.
So leaf subsides to leaf.
Kana…
So Eden sank to grief.
I'm glad I met you, Hatori.
So dawn goes down to day…
The dream has ended, and the day has come.
Nothing gold can stay.
Hatori watches Kana walk away, out of his life, out of his love, with no memory of what they had.
It's better that way.
