Chapter Four: Teran's First Duel
"Yugi!" Joey shouted. He had lost track of Yugi when his communicator became inoperable.
"I can't reach my friend on my communicator," Teran told Joey. Four men in black robes currently surrounded them.
"Looks like the communicators are down," Joey realized when he noticed the goons. The men began to advance on them. Joey held up his fists, ready to fight.
"These Rare Hunters are beginning to bug me. I thought we got rid of them in Battle City," Joey mumbled. One of the four laughed.
"We're called the Card Sharks you idiot and we're here to take your decks! To escape, you must face our wrath. And I challenge the young twerp to a GSIT duel!" The man said. Teran stepped forward and pointed at him.
"You challenge me? What a joke! I'd dice you up in a heartbeat! Tell me your name and your conditions!" Teran commanded.
"Fine then, my name is Butch, co-leader of the Card Sharks. I duel you: 4000 LP vs. 4000 LP. If you win, I'll give you a rare card and your freedom. Lose, and you both shall fork over your decks and drop out of the tournament," Butch explained.
"Wait a minute! I'm in the middle of this mess, so why don't you duel me instead of him?" Joey asked pointing a finger at Teran.
"Because I challenged the twerp and not you!" Butch replied. Joey was torn in his decision.
"All right, I'll let you duel the kid," Joey said solemnly. Teran turned to face Joey.
"First off, my name is Teran! Get it through your skull, Joey Wheeler!" Teran said angrily. Joey gave this kid a withering look.
"Yeah, I know who you are. I admire you highly and designed my deck to match yours. If you think you've got a reason to obey these guys, you're not the only one. My friend Saria is at risk. I have to win this for both you and me, so you better start helping me by being a little more friendly with me, or we may not get out of here," Teran explained as he activated his duel disk.
"Alright... Teran. Take it to him!" Joey commanded. Teran nodded with grim determination.
"Alright twerp!..." Butch began.
"It's time to duel!" Teran finished.
"I'll go first! And I summon Gagagigo (1850/1000), the lizard warrior in attack mode, ending my turn," Butch declared.
"Oh yeah? I summon Marauding Captain (1200/400) in attack mode, which also lets me summon Zombyra the Dark (2100/500) as well! Then I'll place this card face down and sent Zombrya to attack your Gagagigo!" Teran declared. Butch watched as a skeletal faced monster with big muscles blasted away his lizard warrior.
"Now my Marauding Captain! Attack Butch's life points directly!" Butch could only watch as a knight carrying a broadsword slashed him, reducing his life points to 2550.
"Punk! Zombrya's attack power is reduced by 200 due to your attack, and it's time for me to damage you!" Butch said. He glanced at the card he drew and smirked.
"Prepare for my Ekibyo Drakmord magic card! It paralyzes your monster for two turns then destroys it! And if that weren't enough, this card returns to my hand after it destroys a monster. So Zombyra, have a taste of my virus card!" Teran watched as his monster glowed green then fell to its knees.
"But I'm not done yet! I set two cards face down and special summon Aqua Spirit by removing my Gagagigo from the graveyard. Then I'll sacrifice it to place a monster in defensive mode, ending my turn," Butch finished.
This isn't going well. He's got a powerful monster on the field and my Zombrya is destroyed the turn after this one. I have Curse of Dragon in my hand, but do I dare risk summoning it? Butch doesn't seem nervous at all. I just hope my draw helps... Teran contemplated. He drew a card from his deck and smiled.
"I play Graceful Charity! This card lets me draw three new cards from my deck and discard two!" Teran drew three and discarded two.
"Ready to see your defense crumble? I'll play the magic card Bait Doll! It lets me activate one of your trap cards and if it's played improperly, it's destroyed. Lets see card number one!" Teran declared. Butch could only watch as a giant spiked hammer impaled his trap, which was Tornado Wall.
"Yeah! Not only does Bait Doll destroy a trap, it also returns to Teran's deck after being activated, allowing him to draw it again," Joey cheered.
"But that's not all! I will now sacrifice my Zombrya for Curse of Dragon (2000/1500)!" Teran declared. Butch merely smiled as Zombyra and his magic card vanished only to reappear as a skeletal looking dragon appeared.
"OK, it's time then! Curse of Dragon! Attack his face down card with dragon flame attack!" Teran commanded. Joey and Teran watched as Curse of Dragon attacked a wall of pure stone. Butch merely laughed.
"You amateur! You just attacked my Labyrinth Wall (0/3000)! And because your attack failed, you lose 1000 life points!" Butch laughed. Teran scowled as his life points dropped to 3000 and Butch drew a card to begin his turn.
"I'll pass this turn," Butch claimed.
"Good, because it's my turn!" Teran replied. He studied the playing field and his hand.
OK, Butch's Labyrinth Wall card and his face down card are the only things protecting his life points. There must be a way around them. I have an idea on how to do it, but I need more time and more monsters on the field. Teran realized.
"I summon the Dark Blade (1800/1500) in attack mode and end my turn!" Teran declared as a knight in pure black armor, carrying a sinister-looking sword appeared next to his dragon.
"My move then. I'll just play this monster in face down..." Butch began when Teran stopped him.
"Not so fast Butch! I reveal Light of Intervention! This trap card prevents both of us from placing monsters in face down defensive mode!" Teran interrupted. Butch laughed at this.
"Too bad twerp, because I reveal MY face down card, the Seven Tools of the Bandit! I pay 1000 life points to destroy your trap card, so say goodbye to your trap!" Butch declared. Teran stared wordlessly as his trap was destroyed.
"Now, as I was saying, I'll place this monster in defense mode face down, ending my turn," Butch declared.
"OK, Butch, it's time for me to wipe out that wall of yours," Teran said as he drew from his deck.
Meanwhile:
Saria and Yugi were questioning locals about Teran and Joey. So far, they had no luck.
"This isn't going well," Saria said as she took a seat on a bench next to Yugi.
"They've got to be around here somewhere Saria. If only we had some help..." Yugi reassured her when he got an idea.
"Tristan! Serenity!" Yugi said aloud.
"Huh?" Saria asked. Yugi jumped off of the bench.
"If we get my friends, Tristan and Serenity, then maybe we can find them faster!" Yugi suggested.
"If that's so, then lets find them! But where are they?" Saria asked.
"I'll bring them here!" Yugi replied. He reached for his duel disk watch.
"Yugi for Tristan! Come in Tristan!" Yugi said.
"Tristan here. What's up Yugi? Had any luck finding the gym leader?" Tristan replied.
"No, we have a big problem: Joey's gone missing and I need you and Serenity to help me," Yugi replied, "Meet us at Duelist's Café immediately!"
"OK, but it may take us a few," Tristan replied.
"Just hurry!" Saria said frantically.
"Uh, Yugi, who was that?" Tristan asked.
"That was my new friend Saria. I'll explain later, just get over to the café!" Yugi replied.
"OK, see you in a few," Tristan said.
"I just hope they hurry," Saria mumbled.
Stay strong Teran! We're on our way! Saria thought hopefully.
Meanwhile in the alley...
"Ready for my next move Butch? First, I'll play Shield and Sword to swap the attack and defense of our face up monsters," Teran began.
"Crap! That makes my Wall's defensive power reduce to zero!" Butch realized.
"That's not all though! I'll sacrifice my Dark Blade and Marauding Captain in order to summon Gaia the Fierce Knight (2300/2100)!" Teran continued. Butch gave a look of distress to his men.
"Alright! Take it to the wall!" Joey commanded. Teran nodded.
"Shall we try this again? Curse of Dragon! Attack Labyrinth Wall with dragon flame attack!" Teran commanded. Butch could only watch as his wall was burnt to ashes.
"Now for that defensive monster! Gaia the Fierce Knight! Attack!" Joey and Teran watched as Gaia impaled Revival Jam!
"Tough break twerp! In this tournament, when Revival Jam is destroyed, it comes right back to the field in defense mode at the end of your turn. So my life points are still protected," Butch laughed.
"This ain't over yet! I'll place a card face down and end my turn!" Teran declared.
"It's already over! You can't beat my monster! Now watch this! I sacrifice Revival Jam in order to summon my Amphibian Beast (2400/2000)!" Butch declared, "Attack Gaia the Fierce Knight with aqua claw attack!" Just as Amphibian Beast reached Gaia, both of Teran's monsters were caught in a swirl of smoke.
"What the?" Joey wondered.
"I activate my face down card, the all powerful Polymerization!" Teran shouted, "It allows me to fuse together any two monsters on my field if they're compatible with one another."
"I'm not some amateur! I know what Polymerization does!" Butch shouted back.
"Then you know I just summoned Gaia the Dragon Champion (2600/2100) and you're too late to call back your attack!" Teran smirked. Butch was shocked.
"Gaia the Dragon Champion! Attack Amphibian Beast with double dragon lance!" Teran commanded. Butch gave a low growl as he watched Teran's champion impale his beast.
"Looks like your beast is fish sticks!" Teran taunted.
"My turn is not over yet! I play Monster Reborn and revive my Labyrinth Wall (0/3000) in defense mode and I'll also place this card face down, ending my turn!" Butch replied.
"OK, I'll play a card face down and..." Teran began when Butch's trap revealed itself.
"Sorry kid! I activate Lightforce Sword! It'll remove the card you just tried to play for four turns!" Butch interrupted. Teran merely smiled.
"You should have saved your trap card! Cause here's my real move! I play the trap card Blast with Chain!" Teran declared.
"Wait a sec! You can't play that unless you play it face down first!" Butch argued.
"This card is an exception to the rule, or at least in this tournament it is!" Teran argued back. Teran watched as a couple sticks of dynamite wrapped in chain attached to his Dragon Champion's lance. Gaia then began to swing the dynamite around.
"My trap card increases my monster's attack by an extra 500 points. Now Gaia, attack Labyrinth Wall with dynamite lance attack!" Teran commanded. Butch roared in anger as his wall was blown to pieces by Gaia's attack.
"That's it! I'm wiping out your pitiful warrior now! I'll place a monster in defense and also play one card face down, ending my turn," Butch declared.
"Well, now, it appears your hand is empty. And that monster is about to be destroyed, because I summon Gearfried the Iron Knight (1800/1600) in attack mode!" Teran declared. Joey wasn't pleased with this.
"Wait Teran! It's a trap!" Joey warned.
"Sucker! I activate Torrential Tribute! It destroys all monsters when a monster is summoned!" Butch explained. Teran gasped as all of the cards on the field were swallowed up by a whirlpool of water.
"Now then, where were we? Oh yeah! I was about to draw and destroy your chances of escape!" Butch laughed, "I play Pot of Greed! It allows me to draw two new cards to refresh my hand." Teran winced as Butch drew two cards and smiled.
"I summon my second Revival Jam in attack mode! Then I'll place my other card face down and send Revival Jam to cut your life points in half!" Butch declared. Teran watched as Revival Jam quickly surrounded his head and electrocuted him, reducing Teran's life points to 1500.
Aw man. Butch is ahead by 100 life points, and Teran's got no cards on the field or in his hand, and the only card that could help him is in his removed zone because to Butch's Lightforce Sword card and Teran's not due to get that card back for two turns! I hope Teran's draw is lucky. Joey thought as Teran drew from his deck.
"I summon Little-Winguard in attack mode (1400/1800) and then, to end my turn, I put my guard in defense mode due to its special ability, protecting my life points!" Teran declared.
"Fine then, but you'll never win as long as my Revival Jam is on the field, you can't win! And with the card I just drew, your life points aren't safe either! I summon Servant of Catabolism (700/500)! It's special ability allows me to attack you directly, even if you have monsters on the field, so go my Servant! Attack Teran with shell tackle of doom!" Butch commanded. Teran hit the dirt with a thud as his life points were reduced to a mere 800.
"Come on! You have to beat him!" Joey reminded.
I wish it were that simple. Where are you Saria? I could use your guidance right now... Teran wished as he slowly got up.
"Teran!" A girl's voice cried. Everybody in the alley turned to see Saria, Yugi, Tristan and Serenity running towards Teran and Joey.
"Alright! They found us!" Joey cried.
"Big brother! Are you OK?" Serenity asked. Joey nodded.
"I'm fine, but Teran's not," Joey replied. Saria was studying the playing field.
"What's the score Joey?" Saria asked.
"Your friend's opponent, Butch, still has 1600 life points while Teran only has 800. It's Teran's move, but he has no cards in his hand yet. But he has one card targeted by Lightforce Sword and after this turn, he gets it back," Joey explained.
"Come on Teran! You can do this! I know it!" Saria encouraged. Teran nodded.
"Well, now that your friends are here, they can witness you losing to me!" Butch laughed. Teran glared daggers at him.
"Wrong!" Teran corrected as he drew from his deck.
"Trust in the heart of the cards!" Yugi advised.
"Just what I needed! I summon the Crimson Sentry (1500/1200) in attack mode!" Teran declared. The monster carried a flaming bow made of old bones. Its crimson clothing gave off a soft red glow.
"The Crimson Sentry!" Saria exclaimed, "I hope you know what you're doing Teran." Teran nodded.
"Then I'll switch my Little-Winguard into attack mode! Crimson Sentry! Attack Servant of Catabolism with crimson fire arrow!" Teran commanded. Everybody watched as the arrow flew... right towards Revival Jam!
"Tough break again! I activated my trap, Jam Defender. It draws all attacks to my Revival Jam, and because of it, both of our monsters are destroyed!" Butch laughed. It was then that Yugi's Millennium Puzzle glowed then stopped. Yami took control of Yugi and laughed.
"Hey, Butch! I would start worrying if I were you!" Yami taunted, "Your monster and trap are both gone from the playing field. Your Revival Jam can't return to the field until the end of your turn, making your Servant vulnerable!" Butch studied the field and found Yami was right.
"Go my Winguard! Attack the Servant of Catabolism with wind blade attack!" Teran commanded. Butch roared in fury as his life points dropped to 900. Teran then took the opportunity to place his guard back in defense mode.
"Yeah, now your friend Teran's only behind by 100 points," Serenity realized.
"Yeah, but it's Butch's move," Joey warned.
"OK, you runt! Revival Jam, return to the field and attack the Winguard now!" Butch yelled. Teran stood unfazed as Revival Jam attacked, and got warded off!
"What the?" Butch said shocked.
"You're obviously unaware of my Winguard's special ability! I can switch its battle position at the end of my turn, regardless of what position it's in! And since my guard was in defense mode when you attacked, you lose 300 more life points!" Teran pointed out.
"Awesome! Now Teran's ahead again and it's his turn!" Tristan said.
"Lightforce Sword's effect is now over, and this duel is about to do the same! Because my guard is going into attack mode again! The card you removed was a magic card! The magic card Lightning Blade!" Teran explained showing his card. Butch gasped.
"I'll use its magic to raise my warrior's attack by another 800 points. But it also weakens your jam's attack by 500, making it weaker than my monster! So Little-Winguard! Lightning Blade strike!" Teran commanded. Butch frowned as his Revival Jam was destroyed and his life points got reduced to zero.
"Yeah! Teran won!" The girls cheered. Teran walked up to Butch who was kneeling on the ground.
"It was a tough match, but I won. Now fork over your rarest card, and then we'll be on our way," Teran demanded. Butch winced as he handed Teran a card.
"Here's my rarest card: Different Dimension Capsule. It allows you to search for any card you want in your deck. Then two turns after activation, the card is placed in your hand. Now, if you'll excuse me, I gotta find Cassidy," Butch said. He got up off the ground and began to walk away when he stopped. He pulled something out of his pocket and tossed it to Teran. It was a green colored chart.
"It's not often someone beats me. Use that chart to find the gym leader on Windfall. You deserve it," Butch added, "But next time we meet, we shall duel again, and I will beat you and your girlfriend!" Butch then vanished in a swirl of smoke.
I have a feeling we aren't going to see the last of him. Yami told Yugi. Yugi agreed.
Who was that guy? And what does he and Cassidy want from these two? Yugi asked.
I've got a feeling we'll find out soon enough. Yami replied.
