Chapter Nine: Dueling Legend Part 1
"I said, give me the pearl!" The knight claimed. Patrick took one step backwards.
"Not on your life! I need this for my research!" Patrick stated.
"So take a hike metal head!" Saria chirped. The knight pointed his sword at Saria.
"Stay out of this brat! Lest you want to face the same fate as your father!" The knight warned venomously. Patrick held his bag towards Saria.
"Take it and run!" Patrick commanded, "I'll take care of Mr. Congeniality here." Becky grabbed the bag and grabbed her daughter's arm.
"Come on!" Becky commanded and everyone followed her towards the docks. Saria quickly looked back to see the knight trying to run after them but her father had drawn his sword. The knight had drawn his and soon they were swinging at each other. Saria could only pray he could handle himself while she followed her friends. When they reached the boat, Becky reached for a wrist communicator watch similar to Saria's.
"Matson! Hostiles attacking need immediate evac!" Becky said. Saria knew this was shorthand commanding.
"Roger that! We're coming!" The other side responded. Saria wondered who Matson was but her thoughts were interrupted by a large shadow overhead. Saria looked up and gasped. Flying above was a large airship. It was 'I' shaped and silver cables were being dropped to the ground below. Becky grabbed one.
"Everybody, grab a cable and wrap your hand around it! We're going up!" Becky explained as she wrapped her hands around the thick cable. Saria quickly followed suit as did Tristan and Joey, but Yugi and Serenity were reluctant to grab the cable.
"I don't want to fall," Yugi said nervously. Saria undid her cable and tied it to Yugi's belt then to her own.
"Don't worry: If you come undone, I'll be there to stop you," Saria said as Tristan did the same thing to Serenity.
"Hold on tight!" Becky warned as she was deftly drawn towards the ship. Everyone quickly rose at high speed and was pulled into a small antechamber where motorized pulleys controlled the cables. The gang was hanging about a foot above the floor, which now blocked up the hole they had come through. Everyone undid himself or herself and dropped to the floor.
"Follow me!" Becky commanded and she went through a nearby door. Everybody gasped at the size of the ship's main chamber. There were wide windows allowing for sightseeing and the walls were littered with control panels, hanging screens and the occasional vending machine.
"Wow! What a ship!" Joey murmured. There were many people running around the ship. But the one that caught Yugi's eye was the tall blond one walking towards them. He wore the regalia of a commander.
"Mrs. Floyd, good to see you. Were you successful getting the pearl?" The man asked. Becky nodded as she showed the large pearl.
"Lets worry about the pearl later! My husband is in danger!" Becky said urgently.
"Right! Men! Full speed towards the island! Look for Patrick!" the man commanded. The ship began to move and Yugi's friends got a birds-eye view of the island.
"Nice view," Tristan commented. Saria pressed her face against the glass.
"There's my dad!" Saria exclaimed. Everybody turned and gasped. Mr. Floyd and the knight was sword fighting on the cliff above where they met Quill. Mr. Floyd was being pushed back towards the wooden railing, the only thing separating him from a large fall to the rocks below. Mr. Floyd was struggling with his opponent when his sword was knocked out of his hand. Mr. Floyd was backing towards the railing as the knight slowly advanced on him. Saria couldn't stand the suspense. She raced back to the rope room and unwound a cable. She tied it to a harness that sat on a hook and put on the harness. She opened the door as everyone crowded in the doorway. They recoiled at the rush of wind. The ship was over the cliff by about 100 feet.
"Saria! What in Nayru's name do you think you're doing?" Mrs. Floyd said nervously.
"Saving dad!" Saria replied. She then leapt out of the hole while everyone looked on. The rush of warm air would've felt nice in average situations but a life was at stake. She rapidly approached her dad.
"Dad!" Saria yelled. The two fighters stared at the rapidly approaching child.
"Saria!" Patrick yelled.
"Dad! Run for the cliff and grab hold of me!" Saria said as she got near the cliff. Mr. Floyd quickly ran towards the cliff and jumped over the railing as the knight fired explosive energy beams towards him. Mr. Floyd reached for his daughter and caught her hand. Saria smiled in relief as the cable began to retract back into the ship. Mr. Floyd used his free hand and pulled himself to her level.
"Nice work kid," Patrick smirked as the two stared down at the enraged knight who was now firing more beams at them.
"Hurry up Matson," Patrick said under his breath as another beam flew by. The two were eventually pulled into the safety of the ship. Pats on the back were given to Saria for her daring feat and Mr. Floyd got grateful kisses from his wife. But Mrs. Floyd wasn't entirely happy.
"Saria! I'm grateful that you saved your father, but promise me that you won't do anything that dangerous again!" Mrs. Floyd scolded. Saria's head pointed towards the floor but her eyes were on her mom's stern face.
"I promise," Saria said, giving her a rue grin.
"Now that that's all straightened out, we can head for Overlook Island," Patrick said.
"What about the knight?" Yugi asked.
"I've sent a radio message to Sklyar. He'll take that maniac down," Matson replied. Everybody let out a sigh of relief as the ship turned to the northwest.
"Wait! What about all our stuff?" Tristan asked.
"I'll have a crew bring it around to Overlook. For now, would you like to hear about the gym leader of Overlook?" Patrick replied as he took a seat. The others followed suit and gathered around in the rec room.
"The leader Mia fights with 3 on 1 obviously. It's rumored that she's never lost a duel. She's never been hit by a direct attack either. She didn't compete in any tournaments except Battle City but she didn't get to the finals in time. Since then, she's never been attacked successfully. I heard it was tough for officials to get her to be a gym leader but they eventually succeeded. If you guys beat her, you'll get Fusion Medals, which are actually good as two medals. There are gyms that do that here," Mr. Floyd explained. The three duelists smiled at this broadly.
"How many gyms do that, Dad?" Saria asked.
"This is one of two. The other is located at the Islet of Steel," Patrick replied. Becky then burst in.
"Guys, we've arrived on Overlook," She announced.
"OK you guys! Time to meet a legend. You ready?" Mr. Floyd wondered. Yugi, Joey and Teran nodded.
"I sure am," Teran said, but Saria thought she heard a twinge of nervousness in his voice. The group filed out but Yugi was taken aside by Joey. It turns out the ship was floating over an island that was a very small rock. The only building was a couple of different sized towers, each with a tree growing on them. On the second to largest tower was a hole wide enough for a grown person.
"Hey Yugi. I gotta a feeling about Saria's mom and dad," Joey whispered, "Could ya not use Yami during this duel? I'm asking you for Yami's sake. I don't know what these guys would think of him." Yugi nodded. When it came to a friend's request, Yugi would follow through on it.
Yugi! I agree with Joey on this. We still know little about Saria or her family so I had better lay low for now. Yami replied. It wasn't out loud of course. Yugi could hear Yami telepathically.
"Hey Yugi! You afraid? Come on!" Saria shouted as Serenity and Tristan jumped down through the hole. Saria leaped down and was caught by her father. Then came Yugi and then Joey, but Joey landed on his feet without incident. Patrick opened the lone stone door and the group appeared in a large circular room with an arena. There was a side for three duelists and the other side had a spot for one. Standing up on the platform was a Korean girl with dark hair and eyes. She wore a simple pair of dark jeans and a black sleeveless shirt. Across it was a typical warrior belt gave her a fierce look. Her intense glare gave Teran a sense of fear.
"Are you my next challengers?" The girl asked.
"Mia, you should know by now. Yup, these three boys came to challenge you for Fusion Medals," Patrick said, putting his hand on Teran's shoulder.
"Commander Floyd, I'm surprised you're not back at the Outset Gym," the girl clearly Mia replied. Everyone turned and looked at the warrior.
"Dad! You? Outset Gym? Are you...?" Saria began. Patrick nodded.
"Yes, I'm the Outset Gym Leader," Patrick replied and then he turned back to Mia, "I got called to Dragon Roost to play exterminator on some rogue Bokoblins. I figured to reward these guys for helping me out by bringing them to your gym." Mia nodded as she walked towards her podium. The three duelists followed suit and each took up a platform, Teran being on the left, Yugi in the middle and Joey on the right. The rest of the gang climbed up to a small viewing platform on the edge of the arena. It held several seats for comfort.
"If you were with Commander Floyd then you must know the rules," Mia said when everyone was ready.
"Not all of them," Patrick said as he briefly stood up, "There were two rules I forgot to explain. The first is about your life points. Both sides have 4000 which means you three will share the same life points." Yugi, Teran and Joey gasped but Teran's was clearly the most easily heard.
"You may however intercept enemy attacks that are targeting your partners with your own creatures. However, only defense points will be taken into account when this happens, no matter what position your monster is in," Patrick continued.
That means that my best monsters will be easy prey! They have low defense points! Oh man! What have I done? I shouldn't be up here! Teran thought. Saria easily detected the pain in his face.
"Teran? Do you think you can do this?" Saria asked. Teran shook his head and his temper flared.
"Yes Saria, I can do this! Jeez! I don't need to be babied! I can handle myself just fine!" Teran responded quickly.
But in reality, I'm terrified! Teran thought, his face becoming obvious again. Yugi and Joey noticed this as well and Yugi and Joey nodded to each other.
If we want to win this duel, we'll need Teran's help. If Mia is as good as Mr. Floyd says she is, this could get ugly. And since I promised Joey I wouldn't use Yami during this duel, we'll need all the help we can get! Yugi grimly thought as he placed his deck in a small deck shuffler machine. He then pulled the deck out and drew five cards.
"Since this is my gym, I have starting rights! Now, as they say, IT'S TIME TO DUEL! And for my first move, I shall place a monster in defense mode and place these three cards facedown to end my turn," Mia began. Teran's hand shook nervously as he reached for his deck to draw.
"For my move," Teran began as he placed the new card in his hand then gasped. His hand had only one monster in it and it was too powerful to summon.
Damn! My hand has no monsters that I can play! I've got only magic cards and none of them will protect me from an attack! I guess the best move I've got is to bluff her. Teran thought as he gripped two cards.
"I'll lay two magic cards facedown and end my turn!" Teran declared, grinning broadly. Saria and Mia were studying his face.
I know that grin anywhere. He always tries to bluff me with that grin but I never fall for it. I just hope Mia does fall for it and doesn't attack him. Saria thought as Yugi drew from his deck.
"I'll place two cards facedown too and I summon Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts (1500/1200) in attack mode to finish my turn!" Yugi declared as his lion-like monster appeared on the field.
"Now it's my turn and I'll summon Axe Raider (1750/1150) to the field in attack mode and place one card face down to end my turn!" Joey finished. Mia stared at the field, grinning as her gaze went from Joey to Teran.
"It sounds like you guys had pretty decent hands," Mia commented as she drew from her deck, "But so do I! I reveal my first facedown card, The Cheerful Coffin!" The card's image resembled a tuxedoed man hugging a coffin.
"This card lets me discard up to three monsters from my hand, and I'll ditch this Thunder Dragon (1600/1500) card I have," Mia continued, placing her card in the graveyard, "But this triggers its special ability! I can now search my deck for two Thunder Dragons and add them to my hand!" The boys didn't look too worried at this.
"But that's not all! I also play another facedown card! The magic card Polymerization!" The boys gasped at this.
"I'll fuse together my two dragons that I drew in order to summon the Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon (2800/2100)!" Mia's new monster was a gold- colored dragon with two heads but it emanated electrical power.
"This fusion monster has to wait one turn before attacking though so I'll end my turn there," Mia reminded them and Teran breathed a sigh of relief.
OK, I've got one turn to get a defense on the field. Teran thought as he glanced at the new card. The new card was a trap.
Aw man! What a lousy draw! I've got nothing to defend myself with except this. Teran thought nervously as he reached for his hand.
"I'll place one more magic card on the field and end my turn," Teran declared sadly.
Teran! You idiot! That look on your face practically tells Mia you're defenseless! Saria silently chastised.
"What's up with Teran's draw? He hasn't played any monsters," Tristan wondered. Serenity nodded in agreement.
"He couldn't have that bad of a draw," Mrs. Floyd thought as she glanced at her husband. He was studying Teran carefully.
I see Teran. You had a lousy hand with monsters you can't play right away. That's why you're scared. You're a way to your team's life points! You need to not make that obvious or she's going to go all out on you! Patrick noticed as Yugi reached for his deck to draw.
"I'll now sacrifice my Gazelle in order to summon my Beast of Gilfer (2200/2500)!" Yugi began as his Gazelle vanished and his dragon-like beast in red armor appeared.
"And now my Beast! Beast flare attack!" Yugi commanded. Mia merely smirked as the fire blast hit a Big Shield Guardna's (100/2600) shield.
"Sorry Yugi, but you hit Big Shield Guardna (100/2600), and since your Beast has only 2200 attack points, your team loses 400 life points!" Mia replied. Yugi frowned in anger as the life points dropped to 3600. Yugi turned to his teammates.
"Sorry guys," Yugi apologized.
"No big Yugi, I would've done the same thing," Joey replied as he drew from his deck. Teran nodded in agreement.
"I'll place Tiny Guardian (1400/1800) in defense mode and throw one more card facedown to end my turn," Joey declared, his new monster appearing in a crouching position.
"Joey! Your Axe Raider! It's still in attack mode!" Serenity shouted. Joey glanced at the field and let out a startled gasp.
"Bummer, especially with the new card I drew. Prepare yourself boys," Mia taunted, each of the three duelists frowning, "I've just begun and things are about to get tougher!"
