Chapter Nineteen: Frozen Heart
"Saria... Can you hear me?" A voice asked.
"Hey Yugi... I think she's comin' around," another voice said.
That's Joey and Yugi. Come on! Wake up Saria! Saria thought. Wearily, she opened her eyes and saw everyone but Tristan and Teran staring at her. Saria tried to sit up but her entire body shook with pain from the explosion.
"What happened?" She mumbled.
"We found you on the boat, knocked out," Yugi explained.
"You had us scared to death man," Joey said.
"We thought you were a goner! If Serenity hadn't gone and checked on you, you might have..." Yugi said, leaving his sentence unfinished.
"Yeah, sorry to worry you guys. Where are we now? Did we make it through the canal yet?" Saria asked. Yugi shook his head.
"No, we..." Yugi began.
"Some creepy woman won't let us through. She's demanding that we turn over your Hero of Time card. Of course, we're not going to let that creep get it," Joey said.
"Come to think of it, Serenity went to negotiate with her and she hasn't come back yet," Yugi added.

MEANWHILE...

"That card is my friend's card. You can't have it!" Serenity shouted. She, with Saria's cloak around her, was standing at the bow of the Sea Wheeler talking to a woman clothed in a blue dress. Everything about the woman was blue: Her clothes, her eyes and even her skin. She was standing on a wall of sheer ice.
"Your friend doesn't know what she has! That card belongs to my master! Return it now and you may pass!" The woman shouted back. Serenity stood her ground in a karate stance.
I'm glad now that Tristan had convinced me to take that karate class. Serenity thought as she stared down the woman.
"For the last time, you can't have it! It's not yours!" Serenity declared.
"Then perhaps we can duel for the card? If you win, I'll let you pass. Lose and I'll take that card then blow you to the farthest reaches of this icy wasteland! What's it gonna be?"
"I'm not gonna duel for something that isn't mine and isn't yours!"
"You don't have any choice!" It was then the woman glowed a pale blue. She thrust her hands to the sky and the water began to kick up, forcing Serenity to grab hold of the side. Serenity turned and watched as a wall of ice emerged from the water behind the ship.
"We're trapped!" Serenity gasped.
"Like I said, you don't have any choice! Duel me now or be trapped here forever!" Serenity glanced down at her pink duel disk watch. She then looked back at the woman she was about to face. Serenity prepped her watch and stood in a dueling stance.
"Hold on!" A male voice suddenly cried out. Both girls turned to see Joey in a green cloak coming from below.
"If anyone's gonna duel, it's gonna be me, so count me in too!" Joey declared, pointing a finger at the ice woman.
"Fine! One more duelist won't make a difference!" The woman shouted as Joey activated his watch.
"You two will each duel with 2000 life points and I'll have 4000! Got it?" Joey and Serenity nodded.
"Just tell us your name first," Joey said.
"Call me Aerisia!" the woman replied.
"OK, lets duel!" Serenity said as she drew her first six cards.
Mr. Floyd said these cards were tough to beat. It's time to see if he's right. Serenity thought as she contemplated her hand.
"I'll place a monster in defense mode then place one card facedown to end my turn," Serenity said, her cards appearing in front of her.
Those cards will help a lot. Serenity thought eagerly as Joey drew.
It's a good thing Yugi's grandpa taught Serenity how to play Duel Monsters or this duel would be entirely up to me. Joey thought.
"I'll summon Alligator's Sword (1500/1200) in attack mode and throw two cards facedown. Your move ice witch," Joey smirked.
"How long did it take you to come up with that one? I'll summon my Ice Mage (1700/1300) in attack mode and play this field magic card: Frozen Wasteland! It'll raise the power of my icy monster by 300 points," Aerisia replied, her blue magician appearing on the field.
"Now! Attack the girl's monster with freeze wind strike!" Aerisia commanded. Serenity watched as the mage froze her facedown monster, a blue haired, female magician bearing a magic cane.
"Oh no! My Eldeen (950/1000)!" Serenity gasped as it shattered to pieces.
"Ho ho ho! But that's not the worst part! Since my magician froze your monster before it struck, half of its defense points will be deducted from your life points!" Aerisia boasted. Serenity frowned as her life points dropped to 1500, "Well, that'll end my turn but I would think twice before throwing any more monsters in defense mode." Serenity studied her hand. She only had weak cards to rely on.
"We'll see about that," Serenity challenged as she drew. She gasped at her draw.
"Come on, play the card and lets move on so I can take back the Hero of Time," Aerisia said, a tone of annoyance in her voice.
"As you wish. I play the magic card, Card Exchange!" Serenity said, revealing her magic card.
"What? What's Card Exchange?" Aerisia asked.
"With this magic card, I can exchange my hand for someone else's. I'll exchange cards with you!" Serenity explained. The two women met in the center of the playing field and switched hands. Serenity smiled as the two separated.
It's a good thing that Mr. Floyd was kind enough to give that card to me. Now that I have a hand of decent cards, maybe I can be of better help to Joey. Serenity mused as she looked over her hand.
"Now, I'll play Monster Reborn and revive my Eldeen (950/1000) in attack mode!" Serenity declared, her monster reappearing on the field. Aerisia grimaced. She knew what was coming.
"Now I'll sacrifice it to summon your Frostare (2300/1500) in attack mode!" Serenity shouted, her monster appearing on the field. It resembled a giant eyeball with wings of ice.
"Oh no!"
"Oh yes! Frostare has a special ability! Use it Serenity!" A courageous voice said. Everyone turned to see Yami in a blue cloak watching with Teran and Saria at his sides.
"What's its special ability?" Serenity asked.
"If you discard a water or a new ice-type monster, you can freeze her deck for one draw phase, making her unable to draw any cards!" Saria explained.
Hold on! How come I know what that card does? I've never even heard of it! What's going on with me? Saria wondered. Serenity looked at her hand and saw a weak water monster.
"Ready? I'm going to discard this Gale Lizard in order to freeze your deck!" Serenity said, placing the card in her graveyard. Everyone watched as Frostare shot out a beam of blue energy at Aerisia. Aerisia recoiled as her deck became coated with virtual ice.
"My deck! You'll pay for that Serenity!" Aerisia threatened.
"I wouldn't be too sure of that! Frostare! Attack Aerisia's Ice Mage!" Serenity commanded. Aerisia grimaced as her monster was frozen and shattered. Her life points dropped to 3400.
"That'll finish my turn," Serenity said, watching Joey draw a card.
"I'll summon Swordsman of Landstar (500/1200) in attack mode!" Joey announced, his infamous swordsman appearing on the field.
"Now, Alligator's Sword and Swordsman of Landstar! Attack her life points directly!" Joey commanded. Swordsman of Landstar took off and wiped off 500 of Aerisia's life points but Alligator's Sword remained rooted to its spot.
"I said Alligator's Sword! Attack her life points directly!" Joey repeated, but his alligator didn't move. Instead, it became frozen solid in a block of ice!
"What the? What's up with my monster? It's frozen!" Joey said, stunned.
"My Frozen Wasteland has one more ability. All reptile and sea serpent attribute monsters can't attack with Frozen Wasteland in play. It freezes the water in their bodies, stopping them cold!" Aerisia laughed, "but that's not all! If I can destroy them, half of the defense points will be deducted from your life points!" Joey nervously glanced at his hand.
That's not good. Right now, I've got nothing that can help me out except my two facedown cards. Joey thought.
"I'll let you go," Joey said solemnly.
Things don't appear to be to bad. I just hope Joey didn't load his deck down with reptile or sea serpent monsters. Teran thought as he saw Aerisia study her hand.
"Your Frostare prevents me from drawing this turn, but I don't need to do this! I play your magic card, Biometrics!" Aerisia said, flashing Serenity's magic card.
I knew I should have placed that facedown. Serenity thought.
"With this magic card, I can summon a monster with attack points exactly equal to one of your monsters. I'll summon from my deck, the Ice Soldier of Steel (2300/2200) in attack mode!" Aerisia said, a simple soldier in blue-gray armor appearing at her side.
"Now, I'll have it attack your Swordsman of Landstar!" Aerisia warned, her knight rushing Joey's swordsman.
"Hold on! Reveal trap card, Skull Dice and to make sure it works, I'll also play Graceful Dice!" Joey interrupted, his two facedown cards revealing themselves.
"Sorry Joey! My monster is trap proof! You can't use trap cards that designate my monster as the target!" Aerisia said, pointing a finger at him.
"Nuts! But my Graceful Dice can save me! The number I roll will be used to multiply my monster's attack strength! So go Graceful Dice!" Joey explained. The die quickly hit the ground and began to slow.
The only way Joey can win is if he rolls a six! The odds are extremely low that'll happen. Yugi thought as the die slowed and revealed a four.
"Sorry Joey, but your Swordsman's attack will only be multiplied by four so its attack is only 2000 while my soldier's attack is 2600 due to Frozen Wasteland. After this attack, your life points will drop to 1400," Aerisia said as her soldier destroyed Joey's monster.
"I'll end my turn now but there's no way you two can win!" Aerisia finished. Serenity drew from her deck.
"I summon Vampire Lady (1550/1550) in attack mode! Then I'll have Frostare attack your steel soldier!" Serenity declared, a purple robe wearing green haired female vampire appearing at her side. Frostare quickly rushed at the steel soldier.
"What? But that means both monsters will be destroyed!" Aerisia realized as both monsters clashed and vanished in a white explosion.
"Yeah, but my Vampire Lady can attack you directly!" Serenity replied, her monster flying towards Aerisia. Aerisia recoiled as Vampire Lady 'bit' into her neck and drained 1550 of her life points.
"Here's the cool part! I can now make you send one card from your deck to the graveyard and I choose a monster card, so pull your deck out and the first monster you run into goes straight to the graveyard!" Serenity smiled.
Impressive! Serenity really knows what she's doing out there. Yami thought as Aerisia searched her deck.
Man, she makes Aerisia look like a novice! Glad I don't have to duel her. Teran thought as Aerisia put the top card of her deck in her graveyard.
"Now, I'll play the Select Spell trap card I laid!" Serenity announced, her trap revealing itself.
"Oh no!"
"By using this trap card, I can search my deck for any magic card and activate it at the cost of 700 life points," Serenity explained, her life points becoming cut in half, "I'll play my magic card DeSpell to destroy your Frozen Wasteland!" Everyone watched as the snowstorm died down and Alligator's Sword became unfrozen.
"Oh no! That means I'm wide open!" Aerisia realized.
"That's right. I'm going to finish this!" Joey announced, drawing from his deck, "Alligator's Sword! Attack her life points directly!" Aerisia grimaced as the reptilian swordsman slashed her, destroying the rest of her life points.
"That's that!" Joey said, flashing a victory pose.
"We did it!" Serenity said, hugging her big brother.
"Yes you did!" Yugi congratulated.
"Wow! Aerisia didn't stand a chance!" Teran laughed, patting Joey on the back. Saria nodded. She turned to Aerisia, who was lying on the ground. Saria walked up to her and placed a hand on Aerisia's forehead. Her Triforce briefly glowed as she felt for some life. The only thing Saria felt was pure evil surrounding a pure heart of light.
"Chrono restore," Saria whispered, focusing her power into Aerisia, shattering something somewhere in her heart. Her skin turned to a soft peach and her hair turned a dirty blond. As she awoke, her eyes flashed from blue to green.
"Are you OK?" Saria asked.
"Yes, but... Saria? Is that you?" Aerisia asked. Saria's eyes went wide with surprise. Glancing back to see that the Domino teens were preoccupied, Saria whispered.
"Chrono-freeze!" There was a bright flash of light and Saria and Aerisia watched as everything froze in time.
"Aeris! I didn't know it was you out there! What happened?" Saria asked as she helped up the stricken woman.
"I was under some evil spell. I couldn't fight it with my Sage of Ice powers. Some man with cold blue eyes and dark brown hair did this to me. He and a bunch of suit wearing thugs. The next thing I know, I'm wearing a duel disk and dueling your friends. I'm so sorry," Aeris apologized.
"Tell that to my friends," Saria replied.
"You know I can't do that. My work is supposed to be secret remember?" Saria nodded.
"I know that's what Dad said, but you can trust these guys! I wouldn't be with them if I couldn't trust them."
"Just tell them I vanished." Aeris then pulled out a flute and she played a song. The next thing Saria saw was Aeris vanishing in a ray of yellow light.
"The Prelude of Light," Saria breathed. She then felt something in her cramp up.
"My magic! Chrono-freeze deactivate," Saria commanded. Everything promptly returned to normal.
"Hey! What happened to the ice witch?" Joey asked. Saria shrugged.
"Who knows? Anyway, the path is unblocked so lets keep on course shall we?" Everyone nodded. Everyone went below decks and not soon after, they were through the canal and in open, warm waters again.
"Ah, warm water. This is so much better than the freezing wasteland we just left," Saria sighed. It was then that storm clouds began to gather.
"So much for an eventless day." It was then Saria went below decks, wondering what was coming next.
