The Secret War

Beginnings

"Commander, the compound is on fire." He could still hear these words ringing in his ears. The sound of weapons fire a muffled boom over the com channel. This is a common thing he hears whenever he tries to sleep. Giving up any hope of drifting back to sleep he gets up and stands by the window watching the sun come up.

Jon Saberhagen has been having this dream for three years now. He had been hoping to keep himself so busy with his unit that he would forget. It worked until he went to sleep, then the events of that terrible day would come flooding into his mind.

He saw a soft beam of light creep into his reflection in the window and knew that the door was open.

"Major are you awake sir?" The voice was that of his aide, Sergeant Collins. It was obvious that he was awake but he didn't want to embarrass the young man so he waved his dismissal. When the door was closed, the memories once again closed in on him.

Three years ago he was the commander of a Mercenary unit working for the FED. COM. When they returned home to their home planet from a mission, they found something was very wrong. While they were gone their compound had been attacked and burned to the ground. Everyone that was in the compound had been civilians, including his wife and two young children. They had all been killed.

His advance forces had encountered some of the enemy and destroyed them to the man. They found the arm and sword emblem on the remains of the enemy mechs, marking them as Capellan confederation forces.

Jon launched a mission of revenge with anyone that would follow him. With a full battalion in tow he crossed over into the Confederation leaving a swath of destruction where ever they went.

That was three bitter years ago and he wasn't sure that he had caught the unit responsible or not, but now it was too late for him to turn back. He and the men and women of his unit were all wanted by the armed forces of the Confederation.

A month ago small groups of Mech warriors from around the FED. COM. started trickling into his forces. He now had nearly two full regiments at his disposal, enough to make a raid on a major planet. Up until now it had all been hit and run tactics. The time had now come to announce his new plans to everyone. That is why his aide came for him so early, he wanted time to prepare himself for the discussion.

Shaking his head to clear it of all the painful memories, he turned and walked out the door his aide had used a few minutes before.
