Chapter Eight: I Love You

Last Chapter:

"What is it Mrs. Hirugashi?" asked Kasumi nice as can be as she poked her head in the room.

"Could you show Rin how to run our bath? She doesn't know how to use ours." Said Mrs. Hirugashi.

"Of COURSE Mrs. Hirugashi. C'mon Rin! Time to get squeaky clean!" said Kasumi, grabbing a surprised Rin's hand. Rin nearly snapped her hand away, not trusting the other girl but allowed herself to be dragged upstairs. She doubted that Kasumi would try anything. What harm was there in a bath?

Kasumi lead her into the bathroom and turned on the tap. She smiled as the hot water filled the tub and said to Rin as she left, "Hope you enjoy you're bath!" Then she left. Rin stripped down and sat in the tub. It was strange being unlike the one at her home. But never the less, Rin welcomed the warm water and washed all the dirt from her body and hair. She let her muscles relax but her mind drifted to the night before. She felt a small shoot of the tension she had felt go through her body, but it passed as she quickly changed her thoughts.

The Story Continues...

Rin finished washing up and changed back into her regular clothes. She toweled off as much of her hair as she could and settled it away from her eyes. Just as she came from the bathroom, Kasumi was there to greet her with a strange looking thing in her hand.

"Do you need help blow drying your hair Rin? I can help?" she asked in her annoyingly happy tone.

"Er," started Rin. 'What is a blow drying?'

"Rin, go ahead. It's just something that gets your hair dry faster. It's like the TV." Said Sota who was right behind her.

Rin was lead back into the bathroom and Kasumi sat her down on the toilet. It took a while to dry her hair since it was so long. Rin looked Kasumi and asked softly:

"Why are you being so nice to me?"

"Because Sota honey told me to be. He heard the bad, bad things I said to you and said I had to be nicer. I would do anything for Sota." Said Kasumi happily. Downstairs they heard a bell ring. Rin jumped. "Oh goody! That would be Hikaru. Let's go meet him Rin."

Rin went downstairs with Kasumi and heard the voice of a boy talking to Mrs. Hirugashi.

"I hope I'm not intruding on you in anyway Mrs. Hirugashi. I would hate to be rude." Said Hikaru.

"Don't worry, you're welcome here. Oh Kasumi, Rin! It's about time!" said Mrs. Hirugashi.

"Sorry it took so long!" puffed Kasumi. "Rin's hair is really hard to dry."

They came into the room and Rin felt an immediate heat rise to her face. Standing across from Mrs. Hirugashi was the most handsome boy she'd ever seen. He smiled at her warmly and held out a little red flower to her. Rin accepted it, her heart jumping. She heard Sota come up behind them and glanced at him. He was looking right at Hikaru and no one else.

"Sota, so nice to see you again."

"Wish I could say the same." Replied Sota.

"Hikaru, this is Rin. She's Sota's friend. She's having a family problem so she's staying with Sota." Said Kasumi. She pushed Rin forward and Rin bumped into Hikaru.

"S-sorry." She said quietly.

"That's okay. Have you shown Rin around at all? Surely you haven't kept her confined to the house all this time?" asked Hikaru, smiling warmly at her. She gulped.

"Her father gave specific instructions for her not to leave the house. I'm supposed to be protecting her and the problem may have followed her here. I don't suggest us gallivanting all over the city." Said Sota.

"You'll be with us right Sota?" asked Hikaru. "I don't see any harm in it. Do you Rin?"

She shook her head. "No." she replied. She glanced over at Sota who had his lips in a fine line. She felt a wave of guilt come over her. She loved Sota, she knew she did...but his boy...he had some charm. Some charm that made Rin felt butterflies zoom in her stomach.

"It's settled then." Said Hikaru. "I brought my car. Kasumi, Sota, would you care to join us?"

"Of course we would! Right Sota honey?" gushed Kasumi. Rin nearly gagged. Kasumi WAS too happy for any human being.

Sota just grumbled and Hikaru took Rin's hand and flashed her another smile. The foursome went outside and Hikaru opened the door for Rin as she climbed into the car. She fumbled with her seatbelt but finally got it on. Hikaru slipped into the driver's seat and Kasumi and Sota sat in the back. Kasumi latched herself onto Sota's arm, a goofy smile on her face.

"Hikaru, I do have something to say though." Said Sota tightly to the driver.

"What?"

"If her father finds out what you did, I hope your family has good insurance, because they'll be needing it for your funeral."

"Oh Rin, your father isn't that bad is he? I bet he wouldn't kill anyone for any reason." Laughed Hikaru.

Rin gulped again. 'Lord Sesshomaru kills for FUN. He would have no problem in killing you Hikaru if you even look at me the wrong way. Thank goodness he's across the well.'

Hikaru drove them around all afternoon. They stopped at a small café for ice cream and went to the park. Rin had reached out to feed the ducks and Sota did too. Hikaru tripped him and Sota feel in the lake and Kasumi and Hikaru laughed. Rin helped him out and asked if he was okay. He was very close to her and she began to feel the need for his kiss. Hikaru took her away though, still laughing. They also went to a movie and Hikaru thought Rin was scared because it was a horror movie and used that as an excuse to hug her, but Sota knew it was because she was scared of the screen and sounds. His mind flashed back to the small TV in the kitchen.

At the end of the afternoon, Hikaru drove them to the amusement park and actually dared Rin and Kasumi to ride the Freefall, which was one of the scariest rides at the whole park. You were lifted high up and then dropped right back down at a fast speed. Kasumi eagerly accepted, hoping to show Rin up, but in the end Rin was the one who looked bored at the end of the ride and Kasumi like she was going to hurl.

As Kasumi rushed to the bathroom, Sota whispered:

"I bet you got used to falls like that when you ran with Kekki or Sesshomaru. What story would they take you out of?"

"It depends. Sometimes it was the tenth floor. That was fun." Giggled Rin.

"So, what are you two talking about?" asked Hikaru leaning in between them.

"Nothing." Said Sota defensively.

"I do have one more ride in mind. Rin, would you like to ride Cupid's Tunnel with me?"

"Hikaru, no way!" protested Sota.

"What are you so huffy about? You are going to be riding with the lovely Kasumi." Said Hikaru narrowing his eyes. Sota grumbled and he took Kasumi's hand as she came back. They went up to the ride and Hikaru helped Rin into the swan shaped boat.

"What does this ride do?" she asked. "Does it fall as well?"

"No Rin," chuckled Hikaru. "You just sit in the boat and go along the little stream. It's very fun."

Some how Hikaru had managed to get three boats ahead of Sota and Kasumi and that ticked Sota off to no end. As they slowly drifted, Rin squirmed in her seat. Hikaru had wrapped his arm around her shoulders and she didn't like the way he looked at her. Her thoughts kept drifting back to Sota and Kasumi who were behind them.

"Are you all right Rin?" asked Hikaru.

"Hm?" she said. "Oh. I'm fine."

"You must be very cold, your lips are purple!" exclaimed Hikaru.

"They are?" asked Rin, touching them with her fingers. She did not feel cold. Hikaru leant forward and whispered:

"Let me warm them for you."

He moved closer and all Rin saw was the faint image of Keiichi coming at her, his lips pursed. She leaned away as he advanced and let out a scream. She toppled over the side of the boat, the unlighted water surrounding her. She chocked in a mouthful and quickly stood. She clamored onto the little walkway that was used to fix the rides when it was broken to run from him. She heard Hikaru calling her name, shouting over and over. Rin knew that it was Hikaru and not Keiichi that had proceeded to kiss her, but the fear of that disgusting first kiss leapt into her mind.

She had no idea where she was going but the little walkway went the same the way the little boats were headed and she ran past startled couples and burst from the ride, shaking and crying. She looked behind her, and saw Hikaru's little swan emerging from the entrance. She ran from him and disappeared into the crowd. She stumbled and fell, ignoring the stranger's hands that tried to help her up.

She pushed people aside as she ran in an aimless direction feeling scared and lost and lonely. She wanted her Lord Sesshomaru, her father for so many years to come and sweep her up in his arms and hold her like when she was little and awoke from a nightmare that made a demon under her bed seem so real.

Rin wanted Sota, her dear, warm Sota. She wanted him to hug her and whisper in her ear that everything was going to be all right. But shock gripped Rin's heart, as she knew that he wanted Kasumi, a girl from his world, a girl who knew more about him than anyone. Rin felt her heart break as she ran, the uncomfortable sneakers she wore, smacking against the pavement. People ducked to get out of her way and she ignored the taunts of how rude she was to push them aside.

She ran until her legs grew tired and Rin collapsed onto a bench as the crowd had thinned. She stared at the unfamiliar structures of the rides and wished that something would just end her unhappy life. Love and hate battled within her heart as her thoughts became more confused and her doubts rose to meet the feeling she had held so strongly in an epic battle.

She loved Sesshomaru, he took care of her, loved her, watched her grow, taught her things, how to protect herself, how to be a strong willed young woman. She hated him for cursing her to mate with the demon called Keiichi. She hoped that the guilt of knowing he brought this pain upon his daughter would tear at his insides and would steal his breath. She hated herself for being so weak as she felt her spirit crumble, she hated Sota for choosing Kasumi, she loved him for being so kind to her.

She sat there for a long time, and even as she heard Sota's frantic voice come over little boxes from the lantern posts, she ignored his calls, the battle for her heart and mind still raging. Finally, as the stars twinkled and no one had found her Rin looked up. She felt cold now. A deathly cold. She knew exactly what had to be done. She wanted to Sota to be happy. And he would be happy...with Kasumi, not her. Not a weak spirited baby who cried at the mere touch of a man.

"Keiichi," her sore throat whispered. "I know you are there. Show yourself right now."

Silence greeted her in full. She fumed, ready to give herself to him, to make her heart stop hurting. To make the ache that had taken over her body to go away.

"Come out now damn you!" Rin cried.

"Rin...?" asked Sota's deep voice. She ignored him. She wept as she cried for Keiichi to come again and again.

"Come and take this pain from me you heartless bastard!" she shouted. She slipped off the bench and onto her knees, her body shivering from cold, hunger, pain and heartache. Sota stared where he was, watching Rin as she called for the man who hurt her, who weakened her. He had sent Kasumi home with Hikaru and she happily did so, saying she'd do anything for him.

"Rin, let me take you home." Sota said quietly as Rin sobbed. He had never known a person so young who had so much pain and hate coursing through their body at the same time. He had never seen depression, a person having suicidal thoughts, or requests that he knew would damn them to grief.

He took a step towards her and she yelled at him, "Go away sir! Go back to the woman you are courting and waste no time with me! Leave me be! Leave me be!"

Sota denied her and walked up to her. He knelt down and took Rin in his arms, holding her close to him as she struggled, shouting curses at him, at Sesshomaru and herself. Sota stayed that way and was glad that the park rangers that had come with kept their distance. When Rin had exhausted herself by crying and had fallen asleep, he took off his jacket, put it around her and picked Rin up.

"I'll take her home. Sorry about this." Said Sota to the rangers who nodded.

"You might want to have a doctor look at her. She was gone a long time in this cold air." Said one of them as Sota passed. He merely nodded and went back to the main office. His mother was waiting there for him.

"Inuyasha and Kagome came. They're at the house. Hajime and Nodaka went back to their parents. And he came as well..." she said.

"I knew he would. I deserve to be mauled." Said Sota as they went to the parking lot. He sat in the back to hold Rin and tried to wipe away dried tears from her streaked face.

"Sota, you can't blame yourself. You did try to protect her. You did your best honey." Consoled Mrs. Hirugashi.

"My best wasn't good enough. I should have known not to let Kasumi call that bastard, or have Hikaru talk me into riding that stupid boat thing with Kasumi instead of Rin." Said Sota in self-blame.

"Wait until we get home Sota." Said Mrs. Hirugashi. They drove in silence after that, only Rin's breathing being the sound heard most. The moment the car came back to the Hirugashi shrine, Inuyasha and Kagome and Sesshomaru were there to meet them. Inuyasha and Kagome looked at Sota with pity while Sesshomaru looked as though he was indeed going to maul the boy he had put Rin in the care of.

"You little ingrate." He snarled. "Hand her to me, and never, EVER come near her again. I trusted you to protect my daughter and you could have let her fall into the hands of the person who wanted her most. I shall bring her home under my protection, as I should have done from the start. If I catch any scent of you near my palace or the grounds I shall take great pleasure in killing you with my own hand. And I shall not grant you a quick death."

"Forgive me, I..."

"I shan't forgive you. Never. Now give her here." Sesshomaru said as he held out his arms to take Rin. His left arm had been restored with the help of the Jewel of Four Souls when Naraku was defeated.

Sota transferred the sleeping girl to her father's arms and told him bluntly:

"I will except my punishment. May you tell her one thing for me when she wakes up?"

"No!"

"Sesshomaru...let him," said Inuyasha.

"Please Sesshomaru, let him give her just one message." Echoed Kagome.

"Fine, one thing and one only." Snarled Sesshomaru in annoyance. Sota stepped near her and looked down at the sleeping girl. He delicately moved a strand of hair from her face.

"Rin," he said. Sota stepped back and squared his shoulders. He looked directly at Sesshomaru, than Inuyasha and his older sister, his mother and finally back at Rin.

"I love you."
