Moon River
By Puppie Love
Warnings: some hints at boy/boy, some hints at boy/girl, some oddness, some blatant movie references (guess which movie is being referenced and I'll love you forever), and even for one of my stories, I don't like this.
Summary: Otogi ponders and comes to a conclusion. Hints at Kaiba/Jounouchi, Honda/Miho and Otogi/Nobody.
The more he thinks about it, the more Otogi Ryuuji realizes the truth. He's not in love with anybody (even himself, no matter what Jounouchi says. Jounouchi's stupid anyway). And he never will be, either, because he's a wild thing and you just can't love a wild thing. A wild thing will run off into the woods, or into a tree and then a higher tree and then to the sky.
Otogi used to think he was in love with Shizuka, but he wasn't. Shizuka was just Otogi's Fred, and Otogi can't have a Fred anymore because he's in metaphorical Brazil. There's always Anzu, but she thinks Otogi uncouth and crazy and phony. But a real phony, Otogi thinks, inwardly smirking wryly. And there's Miho, but Miho loves Honda. Miho's not a wild thing deep down; Miho's not really like Otogi. Nobody is quite like Otogi.
That's okay with Otogi. No, it's more than just "okay" with him—he loves it. And Lady Luck loves him, and she's all the mistress Otogi can ever want anyway, because women are boring and dull and will try to put you in a cage if you let them. Otogi doesn't belong in a cage; he's off to see the world and he has the money the means to do it.
So does Kaiba, but Kaiba's so puppy-whipped it's not funny. He attends to Jounouchi's every whimsical need now; he scowls like any man who has to feed the dog or walk the dog, but like a good master, Kaiba ultimately does what Jounouchi needs or wants him to do. Jounouchi and Kaiba are not wild things like Otogi; Otogi is nobody's master and nobody's pup and nobody's lover.
Not that Otogi would mind being a lover, provided being a lover did not mean being anything else. Because if you try to love a wild thing, they just end up making you cry.
Otogi's made plenty of girls cry.
Lots of people don't have someone. Bakura doesn't have someone, Yuugi doesn't have someone, Malik doesn't have someone. But they're still not like Otogi; they're all bound to something, not a lover but something else that's put them in a cage. No one is going to put Otogi in a cage.
No one but Otogi himself, anyway.
