A Better Ending

Introduction: I got the idea for this story while watching The X-Files series finale for about the fifth time. I realized something I hadn't before. Doggett and Reyes drove off in Mulder and Scully's car at the end. That meant that Mulder and Scully could escape, because all the helicopters were going after the wrong car. But the series finale just cuts to Mulder and Scully's escape and their ending, and never tells what happened to Doggett and Reyes. The purpose of this story is to explain how these two ended in the series.
"Get out of here!" Mulder insisted to Doggett and Reyes, who were sitting in the car he and Scully had driven to the ruin.
"Get in the car!" Doggett said. He wasn't going to leave Mulder and Scully for every government official in the world to find.
"No!" Mulder shouted back. Doggett wondered why he didn't want to get away. "Go, go!" Mulder and Scully ran off. Doggett hesitated, but drove away. It didn't take them long to realize that the helicopters were following them.
"Don't you see?" Reyes asked. "They think we're Mulder and Scully!"
"Well, good, the real Mulder and Scully can get away," Doggett commented. "But what's going to happen to us?"
"I don't know, but if they catch us..." Reyes's face lit up. She obviously had an idea.
"What?" Doggett asked. "You're going to have to tell me what our plan is sometime soon; there's a steep cliff ahead."
"Mulder and Scully CAN"T be found. They're the only ones who know the truth," Reyes said.
"I know. And they're getting away."
"But once the government catches us and discovers that Mulder and Scully are still out there, they'll hunt them down forever. What if they're caught? It'll be the end of all of us."
"And another cover-up," Doggett finished for her.
"Exactly. But if they were to die, no one would go after them."
"What are you talking about? I thought you just said they had to stay alive!"
"They do. But according to those helicopters, we're Mulder and Scully."
Doggett's expression changed abruptly. "Are you suggesting we—"
"Fake their death. By driving this car off that cliff we're coming to."
"What? We can't—"
"John, this is for the greater good here. For Mulder and Scully." Doggett still looked hesitant. "You'll see your son again."
Doggett took a deep breath. As they approached the cliff, he accelerated dramatically. The truck left the safety of the ground. They sat in total suspense, waiting for the inevitable.
"I-I love you, John," Reyes said, as her last words. John leaned over and kissed her as the truck smashed into the rocky ground at the bottom of the canyon. Before anyone could react, the truck exploded, destroying the remains inside.
