Haunted By My Past

Authors note: This is 6 years after Kagome got pulled into the well. Inuyasha and the group have defeated Naraku so Miroku no longer has that black hole in his hand. Rin is now 14 and Sesshoumaru is starting to see her in a different light. Everyone is trying to have a normal life (Kagome has decided to live in the Futile Era) but they all have something- or someone- that's making it impossible.

"YOU FOOLISH GIRL! COME HERE!" Jakken grabbed Rin and hit her with his staff. She never cried, no matter how badly he hurt her. And, thank the gods, she never told Sesshoumaru. Unfortunately, at least for Jakken, Sesshoumaru had been standing in the shadows and had seen what Jakken did.

"JAKKEN!" he yelled. "What, exactly, did you do that for?" He asked that in a deadly calm voice that made Jakken want to run away.

"She was... I told her to... and she wouldn't..." he mumbled. The toad youkai had never been any good at excuses and this was no exception. Rin started to walk away and Jakken asked, "Why doesn't she ever cry? She came close yester..." he almost said yesterday but realized it would mean certain death, "today. Now. Ha-ha. Yeah, just now." Sesshoumaru was no longer paying attention. Rin had, apparently decided not to leave but she was looking at herself and touching her arms and legs etc. like Jakken had hit her there. Sesshoumaru decided to go see what was wrong.

"Has he hit you before?"

"He seems to enjoy hitting me on the head with his staff." Rin knew that would answer his question. She also knew that he was wondering if he'd hit her in other places so she'd worked that into her answer. Jakken wasn't the one who'd hit her in other places. Compared to what had been done to her before Jakken was the nicest, sweetest person on earth.

"Rin, what's wrong? You've been acting strange lately..."

"Sango! What did I do now? You're my girlfriend; of course I'm going to ask you to bare my children! Besides, would you rather I ask Kagome?"

"Yes, if you must."

Using his incredibly large vocabulary, Miroku said- drum-roll-"Huh?"

"Look, Miroku I haven't ever told anyone but..." Just then Shippo came bounding up and started talking when Miroku gave him a silencing glare. After that Shippo just left.

"What, my dear Sango?"

"I... it's... nothing. Never mind, just forget it." He shrugged, deciding to leave it. As he walked away she mumbled, "I wish I could forget it."

"Just tell me! How far did you go with Kikyo? I don't care..."

"Then why must you keep asking me?"

"I just... ok fine, maybe I do want to know but..."

"That's it, I'm outta here!"

"Inuyasha! Wait!" He was already gone. There was no way she could catch up with him. "What is he hiding?" she sighed.

Rin didn't say anything. She'd never lied to Sesshoumaru and wasn't about to start, but she knew that she could never tell him about her past.

"Rin?" Sesshoumaru said, his voice full of concern.

"I just... it's nothing.
