The Gray Moth
By: Allie-Dee
Disclaimer: Don't own Danny Phantom. Nor do I own the moth story. It's from Chicken Soup and the Soul. It's actually really cool. So, don't hate me. Also, this is when Danny and Sam meet in high school. I don't know if they were best friends before that, so just, like, go with me here okay?

Love.
I've never known love until I meet her. Sauntering in the school, looking like she was in the nut house, she took a quick look at the jocks and rolled her eyes. I couldn't help but smile.
I thought she was bizarre, though. I was kind of scared of her; she wasn't the gorgeous that people strived to be. She wasn't "accepted" either. I labeled her strange. Whenever she passed me, there was this intense eye contact. She always looked up, stood up straight, like she was going to succeed. She was intelligent.
We were given an assignment. I was to interview her. I asked the basic questions, "How many brothers and sisters do you have, if any," etc. But when I inquired, "What's your favorite animal?" she gave me this lazy grin.
Then she remarked, "Really want to know?"
"Yes." I answered. She was quite the interesting girl. It seemed like she never really told about her life that much, but you know she has this story hidden inside.
Small pause, she hesitated then said, clearly, and strong, "A moth."
Some of the people around me heard the comment and laughed. I didn't laugh though; I looked at her. A moth? Her favorite animal? "Shut it." she snapped at the guys hooting with laughter. They grew silent. They knew better than to mess with her. Then she gazed at me.
There was that eye contact again and I desperatly I wanted to turn away. She didn't allow me. "A moth...used to be the most beautiful creature in the world. Many colors, many patterns...it was a very wonderful sight to look at. But all the other animals...didn't have those colors. So, the moth gave away its beauty." Stopping, she then finished, "And became gray."
The boys stared at her for a moment then the howls of hilarity rang out. It was odd. I got it, and I wasn't laughing. It seems like people laugh at her because they do not understand her. They do not know what to say, so they just make fun of her.
The bell rang. Perplexed, I walked up her, and asked, "So are you saying, that even though the moth gave away it's colors, it's still beautiful inside?"
Tilting her head toward me, she just watched me. I felt uncomfortable. "You...you got it didn't you? The story, I mean?" she whispered.
And, at that moment, I looked past the strange, weird coat of gray and looked deep inside.
She was the moth. Remarkable on the inside, but gray on the outside.
I silently nodded. "Yeah. I understood it." She beamed, gave me a smile, and walked away. I looked after her, thinking to myself, And I understand you now too.
And now I know love.

Disclaimer: The gray thing is so not mine! I only wish. Isn't it pretty? I read it in Chicken Soup and the Soul. I was like, "Yeah. Sam's the moth." I liked the quote. Sometimes I just read quotes to get inspiration. I read the moth story and that quote and bada-bing! A fanfic arose in my mind!
By the way, gray is my favorite color and moths are my favorite animals. So, just so's you know. So, hope you enjoyed this Sam/Danny one-shot!
