A Hope in the Unseen

As I gaze into this Rainbow of kids

I often wonder what nature will bid

Girls embellished in jewelry and fads,

It's hard to distinguish them from the older lads,

Boys wear earrings, pants below the waist,

In society's eyes they're indeed a disgrace.

Although these kids are in their teen years,

Many have had to shed grown up tears.

Rape victims and welfare recipients are in this array,

Sometimes they're the brightest in the display.

Yet, I can no longer glory in this beautiful rainbow,

The teachers are telling them that its time to go.

They line up in their single files,

Many saying goodbye to their pals

As I look a while longer, I become confused.

What was supposed to be a rainbow has become misconstrued,

There was on line of kids, who each had books

The others were only concerned with their looks....

Serena looked up from her notebook drawing dots along the page; stopping for a moment while a surge of self doubt arises from the pit of her stomach. Who would want to hear her life story much less hire her to work at their paper? But this was the assignment she was given by her literature professor.

She sat up and started to think back to when she first met her boyfriend Darien and his sister Rei; who at first saw her as a stuck up smart girl who thought she was better than her surroundings, one that needed to be taken down a peg. But who in the end helped them see that success was the greatest revenge and the ticket to getting out of their situation.

Darien just graduated cum laude from Harvard Law school while Rei recovered from being raped and is currently enrolled in community college.

It was crazy to think of how she, Serena Moon, could have survived what she had and to be able to write about it.

The phone rang and woke her out of her stupor. Caller Id read Mina Moon, Serena picked up and said." Ay, what is it?"

"Lil Sis is that how you greet your beautiful and vivacious, desirable...must I go on?" said the voice on the other end.

"You forgot the sister on the end, and as usual; you still haven't mastered the English language" Serena replied while envisioning Mina sticking up her middle finger in response.

"So, "Serena said quickly," How are you and Lita doing?"

"Wouldn't you like to know "Mina answered with a smirk" But I'm not here to talk about us, I just called to tell you that I edited the second part of your poem so I'm faxing it over"

Serena said goodbye to her sister and picked up the paper that just came out of the printer. It read:

Walking through the halls can lead to dismay.

"Just say no" is the slogan of the day.

There's a poster for each case, once on every wall;

Over there's the room where they dump them all.

Inside, problems from past and present cause distress.

Is it something the teachers are really able to address?

Teachers don't have time to analyze each dilemma,

So they group the kids with prescribed curricula.

These curricula are not based on intellectual ability,

Instead of target students who lack behavioral stability.

It's not that easy for these kids to behave;

Many of them, teachers think are headed for an early grave.

But does a kid's knowledge depend on his behavior,

Or should he depend on the teacher as his savior.

To meet the needs of each kid is hard,

That doesn't mean they should be labeled "retard"
