A/N: This is a poem about what Elrond could've been thinking after he saw the vision in RotK. Completely movie-verse. This is one of two poems that don't really go together, and I'm going to post the other one as a second chapter, as another battle that Elrond goes through.

Disclaimer: Not mine!

Lost Hope

A child. I saw a child. My daughter's son.

Yet with that, comes death, and I weep at losing my daughter.

My daughter... I cannot change the course of the future,

The past leads to the present, the fall to the rising. What is done is done.

I know I cannot change the weave of destiny, not can I alter

My daughter's love, she holds to that one surety.

I saw the light restored in her, the Evanstar.

I saw the love she held for a mortal man.

I see the death it will inevitably bring.

'But where there is death there is life also!' Truly, but I am scarred

By too many deaths, I do not believe I can

Remain strong in spite of her passing.

She felt cold. So she had made her choice when

The Lord Elrond could not settle his raging thoughts.

So I shall lose her in the end, regretfully, bitterly,

I think these horrid thoughts, my daughter leaving her kin

To join a mortal king. Their love is not cheaply bought,

She shall pay with her precious life. She shall trudge down the bitter alley

That will bring her death. Hope shall fade. So will she.
