Chapter One: The End Revised
"Where's Jack?" Chasity asked.
Melora refused to tell her. Chasity grabbed a dagger a held it to Melora's throat.
"If someone doesn't tell me where Jack is hiding, I'll slit her throat," Chasity threatened.
"He's behind the settee," Bonnie said at last.
"Thank you, Miss Flynn," said Chasity.
She gave a signal to Abigail to remove Jack from behind the settee.
Chasity and her crewmates took Jack and Bernie with them as they left.
I'm sorry, Melora. I should've let her kill you," apologized Bonnie.
"Where's she taking Bernie? We knew she was after Jack, but why'd she take Bernie?" asked Melora.
Arabella came in.
"I saw pirates taking Bernie to the Benninks'" she said.
"Why are they taking him there?" asked Melora.
"Oh, I have a pretty good idea," said Bonnie, "Thank you, Arabella. You can go home now. Let's go and see Lusa, Melora."
At the Benninks', Lusa was preparing to rape Bernie. Together, Bonnie and Melora intervened. Bonnie pinned Lusa to the floor while Melora untied Bernie. Bonnie then took the silk scarves that had held Bernie to Lusa's bed and tied Lusa to a chair and the three Flynns left the Bennink home.
"Where's Jack?" asked Bernie.
"Chasity left with him," said Melora.
"The docks' our next stop," replied Bernie.
When they got to the docks, Athena's Jewel was already gone.
"They're gone," said Bonnie.
"And, we can't go after them since we don't know the first thing about sailing," added Bernie.
"Poor Jack," was all Melora could say.
She was sad. She loved Jack.
As the days went by, Melora would often turn toward the sea and wonder about Jack. She shuddered to think about the horrors Jack would be facing at the hands of Chasity.
Jack, I'm sorry we couldn't have done more to protect you, she thought.
Melora was strolling down the stretch near her home, and in the same spot as he was before, was Jack. This time, he had no shirt, and his various cuts and abrasions were a little more severe. When she leaned over him to shake him as before, Melora noticed something was not quite right. Gently turning him on his back, she soon discovered that he was not breathing and there was no heartbeat. He also had a hole in his head, most likely from a bullet.
Melora woke up crying. It felt so real, she could still feel the soft sand on her bare feet. She made herself a mug of hot milk with nutmeg and cinnamon and went back to sleep.
She told Bernie and Bonnie about her dream the next day. She was still concerned about it.
"I don't think that's any cause for worry, Melly-Lass. It was only a dream," said Bernie.
"I don't think Jack's dead," agreed Bonnie.
"It's not him being dead I'm worried about. I'm worried because I think Chasity will kill him," said Melora.
Bonnie and Bernie told Melora not to worry about that.
