A nice calm day. Nothing on the monitors, a cup of coffee, a few snacks, and light music in the background. True, Hikaru should have been more cautious, but nothing had happened. Besides, it was his first day, and at the point anything really happened, everyone would feel it.

Sighing, he glanced at the monitor, when a sudden spike appeared. The tape metre confirmed it, and the size...

He hit a button on the side of his console, and the alarms blared.

Tokyo's central monitoring station for earthquakes went into immediate action.

"What is it?" his supervisor asked Hikaru as he came over to his station.

"A short, sharp spike, sir. It registers just over eight on the scale."

Supervisor Matsuyama took a look at the tape register, and then pressed the intercom button. "False alert. Everyone back to normal status."

As all personnel started to downgrade emergency personnel, Matsuyama double checked a coincidental, and made a small notation. "I know it's your first day, but didn't you read the manual, especially the part about exceptions?"

"Sir?"

Sighing he looked at Hikaru, and then pulled out a graph book from under the console. "When a small spike like this shows up, you cross check the area from where it came from and open up this book. In it you will find all types of spikes, and there classifications."

He flipped through the book, and then came up with a particular graph which matched, and was uncannily exact in detail, to the spike that had occurred earlier. Under the spike was the statement, 'Tendo Akane type 4: Ranma spiked into the ground because he was flirting with Shampoo'

"Two minutes late today. I wonder what held them up?"

"Sir, what's going on? I thought this was an early response centre for earthquakes?" Hikaru stated, confused with what he was seeing.

"It is, but there are exceptions. Just record these types of earthquakes, and just total the amount of each during the day. Also, if one doesn't match, call me, or take one of those other books from under the counter. I'll explain all to you later."

Hikaru glanced down, and saw books labelled "Juuban", "Nerima II", "Ginza"....
