His weary feet carry him to the chair, where he collapses, eyes closed. His face is streaked with blood and dirt, though it is mostly hidden under his hat and veil of hair.
I do not speak. I draw the curtains quietly, and go to the cupboard of our bedroom, pouring him a glass of rum, and carrying it over to him.
"Rum?" My voice shakes.
"Rum?" he repeats, and I know he is upset. "Rum!"
Colour flooding my cheeks, I do not comment. I love him, remember, and he is clearly shaken by his last mission. But still, his tone has stung me, and tears fill my eyes as I silently fill a basin of water and go back to him, lifting his hat off carefully to reveal his beautiful face.
I feel his eyes on me as I gently wash his face with a wet rag, but cannot meet them with my own for fear of bursting into tears.
I do not have a choice. His fingers are under my chin, and he lifts my face gently but firmly so that I am looking into his. He sees my tears and frowns, running a calloused finger through my eyelashes to remove them. Then he speaks.
"I'm sorry."
"I know."
"I love you."
"Better do."
He smiles. Then he leans in to kiss me.
The basin and rag lie forgotten on the floor.
